(Disclaimer: This transcript is auto-generated and may contain mistakes.) Hi, this is Pastor Roger Jimenez from Verity Baptist Church in Sacramento, California. I just want to make a quick video on the subject of why Christians should not use the word gosh. In Exodus chapter 20 and verse 7, as part of the Ten Commandments, the Bible says this, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. The Bible here tells us that we should not take the name of God or use the name of God in vain, meaning when we use the name of God we should use it with a purpose, either by actually referring to God or talking about God, teaching others about God, but we should not simply use the word God because we stubbed our toe or because we were surprised by something. And most Christians would probably understand that they should not use a phrase like oh my God, but what I've noticed is that a lot of Christians will replace the word God with the word gosh. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word gosh is defined as used to express surprise or give emphasis, used as a euphemism for God. The word gosh is actually a euphemism for the word God. Now you may ask well what's a euphemism? Well the word euphemism is defined as a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or too blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing. So again most Christians realize that using the phrase oh my God would be too blunt or too direct, so they'll Christianize it and they'll use the word gosh, but that's just a milder way of taking the name of God in vain. And you may think well is it really that big of a deal? But in Luke chapter 11 and verse 2, the Bible says this, and he said unto them, and this is the Lord Jesus Christ speaking, he said, When ye pray, say, Our Father, which are in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Jesus said that when we approach the name of God we should do it with reverence and we should do it with respect. And I just want to encourage you if you are a Christian who's gone in the habit of Christianizing taking the name of God in vain by saying oh my gosh, you may want to reconsider that and you may want to remove it from your vocabulary because we want to make sure that when we approach the name of God we do it with a reverent attitude that we might be able to say like the Lord Jesus Christ hallowed be thy name. I hope that helped. Thanks for watching this video. you
