have brother David come in read that for us Luke 24 if you found your place amen and the Bible reads now upon the first day of the week very early in the morning they came into the sepulcher bringing the spices which they had prepared and certain others with them and they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher and they entered in and found not the body of the Lord Jesus and it came to pass as they were most perplexed thereabout behold two men stood by them in signing garments and as they were afraid and bowed down their faces to the earth they said unto them why seek you the living among the dead he is not here but has risen remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee saying the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified the third day rise again and they remembered his words and returned from the sepulcher and told all these things unto the 11 until all the rest it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women that were with them which told these things into the apostles and the rage seemed to them as idle tales and they believed them not then arose Peter and ran into the sepulcher and stooping down he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves and departed wondering in himself at that which was come to pass and behold two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus which was from Jerusalem about three square foot-longs and they talked together of all these things which had happened and it came to pass that while they communed together and reasoned Jesus himself drew near and went with them but the eyes were holding that they should not know him and he said unto them what man of communication are these that you have one to another as you walk and are sad and one of them whose name was Cleopas answering said unto them after only a stranger in Jerusalem it has not known things which had come to pass there in these days and he's into them what things and they said unto him concerning Jesus of Nazareth which was a prophet mighty indeed and ready for God on all the people now the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death and if crucified him but we trusted that it had been he which sort of redeemed Israel and beside all this today is the third day since these things were done yea and certain women also about company made us astonished which were early at the sepulcher when they found not his body they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels it said that he was alive and certain of them were so with us went to the sepulcher and found it even so as the women has said that they saw him not and he said unto them Oh fools and slow of her to believe all the prophets have spoken not Christ who have suffered these things and to enter into the glory beginning at Moses and all the prophets he expanded unto them all in all the scriptures the things concerning himself they do not into the village where they went he made though as though he would have gone further but they constrained him saying abide with us for it is toad evening and our day and the day is first spent and he went in to tarry with them and came to pass as he sat at me with them and took parade and blessed it and break and gave to them and their eyes were opened and they knew him and he vanished out of their sight and they said one to another did not a heart burn within us while he talked with us by the ray and while he opened to us the scriptures and they rose at the same hour and returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven gathered together and then that were with them saying the load is risen indeed and hath appeared to Simon and they told what things were done in the way and how he was none of them in breaking the bread and as they and as they thus speak Jesus himself stood in the midst of them and said unto them peace be unto you but they were terrified and afraid it and suppose that they had seen the spirit and he said unto them why are you troubled and why do your thoughts arise in your hearts behold my hands and my feet that it is I myself handle me and see for a spirit hath not blessed bones as he see me to have and when he had thus spoken he sewed them his hands and his feet and now they believed not for joy and wondered he said unto them have ye here any meat and they gave him a piece of broiled fist and of a honeycomb and he took and did eat before them and he said unto them these are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you that all things must be fulfilled it's a written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the Psalms concerning me then then open to you the understanding that they might understand the scriptures and suddenly then thus it is written and thus a behooved Christ to suffer and be and arise again third day and that repentance and remission of sins be preached in his name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem and you're witnesses of these things and behold I send the promise of my father upon you but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until you be endued with power from on high and he led them out as far as to Bethany and he lifted up his hands and blessed them and came to pass while he blessed them he was parted from them and carried up into heaven and they rested him and returned us to Jerusalem with great joy and we're continually in the temple praising and blessing God amen that's very dear Lord I thank you for this opportunity to come back to your house that you've got Phil pass with your spirit and help us to be edified in Jesus name Amen. Amen so you're there in Luke chapter 24 and we are finishing up the Gospel of Luke and this is the great news here so this is in chapter 23 and I know we kind of had a little bit of a break between chapter 23 and 24 but but we had the crucifixion which is obviously where we have the the sins of the world being put on the Lord but without the resurrection none of that would have mattered so if we didn't have the resurrection we'd be yet in our sins so really everything of the Bible is pointing to this moment and so when it comes to the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior everything in the Old Testament everything from from when Adam and Eve fell is pointing to this point and everything that we read after the Gospels is pointing back to it so this is the pivotal moment this is the greatest story ever told this is something that even in Hollywood movies and everything they're always repackaging the same story so about a chosen one that sacrifices himself to save everybody and that's I mean if you think about it Jesus is the chosen of God he is the elect of God he is the Christ the the Son of God obviously he is God but he's also a hundred percent man and he became one of us to take our place and to save us and so you know but listen all those Hollywood movies and everything else that's out there nothing can compare to the actual true story the original story which is that Jesus died and that he rose again to save us from our sins and in verse 20 verse 1 here we see that Jesus rose early the first day of the week and so in verse 1 here it says now upon the first day of the week very early in the morning they came up to the sepulcher bringing the spices which they had prepared and certain others with them and they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher and they entered in and found not the body of the Lord Jesus now when it comes to this the Bible you could read this and be like well what they got there very early in the morning but when did he when did you rate you know when was he raised you know when did he actually raise from the dead what you have to understand is I believe they're getting there right after it happened meaning like it's it's it's just like boom it happened like as they were coming there he's not there and Mark chapter 16 will the narrator will tell you that that's when he rose okay so it's not like I believe you're like he rose like in the night on sat on the the seventh day of the week he rose early the first day of the week and notice what says in Mark chapter 16 verse 9 it's like I said you could read this and be like well you know they didn't find him early the first day of the week but when did he actually raise from the dead right but in Mark chapter 16 verse 9 it says now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week so he appeared first to Mary Magdalene out of whom he had cast seven devils out of whom he cat he had cast seven devils so the narrator saying that Jesus was risen early the first day of the week they got there early the first day of the week so you can kind of think about the fact that as they're going there this event happens right before they get there okay and and in Luke chapter 24 go back to Luke chapter 24 this is also referred to as the third day okay now I've talked about the timeline of the death and resurrection but I believe that Jesus was crucified on a Thursday that Friday was actually a Sabbath day because it was the 15th day of the first month which was the beginning of that the Feast of Unleavened Bread and that day actually the first day in the last day of that feast they're not to have do any work okay so that next day was a Sabbath day but it wasn't the end of the week Sabbath and then the day after that was the actual Sabbath and so then the first day of the week is when he rose early that first day of the week okay and so notice what it says here in Luke chapter 24 verse 21 but we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel and beside all this today is the third day since these things were done and that's something that's constantly on the third day he'll rise again on the third day he's gonna rise again on the third day over and over and over so that first day of the week was the third day now obviously you can argue that he was he died right at the end of the Thursday right but if you think about it Friday Saturday Sunday right and you say well you know it's not a full day well if he it can't be you know if he's gonna rise early early on the day then it can't be you know a perfect 72 hours okay nowhere does it say it has to be a perfect 72 hours like to the tee okay if it was and he'd have to raise before the even right he would had to raised on that Saturday before before the next day started at even right so but he was but Thursday night Friday night Saturday night you had three days three nights right and so so I just wanted to show you that information is that it doesn't just say obviously they got there early the first day of the week but he actually rose early the first day of the week okay and so and a lot of times they'll say like when it was yet you know still dark right so I mean we're talking early in the morning like it it's almost kind of like if you think about the sun's rising you kind of see that it's the there's you get a little bit of light but it's not technically you know morning yet so anyway what's interesting too is that the first day of the week we just got back from Greece but we when we look at our days it's Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday right and those days are represented by like basically like gods right it's it's you think about Sundays like the Sun God right so s un and then you have Monday which is like moon day it's like the moon so you have the Sun moon I think Tuesday's like Mars and then like Wednesday is like mercury you don't need to know this information so don't write it down but you can look this up later but this is why you like when you're ready anyway if you're like if you know that in Spanish right maricolas right for Wednesday which is like mercury so anyway I was actually looking up when they change this because when out you know out in Greece they don't do that they don't say it that way they actually changed it to the first day of the week is actually called the Lord's Day and then the Monday is basically just means the second day so it's just like saying second third fourth fifth and then Friday is actually called the preparation and Saturday is called the Sabbath so that's like in in in Greece that's how they know their days is like the Lord's Day second third fourth fifth preparation and then you have the Sabbath and the thing that's interesting about that is that that was adopted I was actually looking up like when they change that because you know the Romans basically the Greeks and the Romans you know what their gods they're basically the same just different names in a lot of cases but our calendar as far as the days of the week comes from that but in Greece they basically say we're not doing that anymore and it was about I think the sixth century so it's like 520 AD or something like that they basically switched to not using like Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday and but what's interesting about that is when you're reading if you're reading a you know in Revelation John is on the Isle of Patmos and it says this in Revelation 110 it says I was in the spirit on the Lord's Day and that's literally the word they use for that's like what the Greeks call the first day of the week now I don't believe that that's what they were calling the first day of the week back in Paul's day necessarily but I think they were calling it that like I believe when he says on the Lord's Day they're talking about the first day of the week because they were meeting on the first day of the week and that is something that has been passed down obviously from that point that the first day of the week you have church it's the Lord's Day and all that I think what the Greeks did is that they basically borrowed what Paul did there and obviously he's under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost to call it the Lord's Day I don't think he's wrong to call it he's in the spirit and on the Lord's Day and he's writing this so I I don't think that he's just you know saying something that shouldn't be said but anyway all I have to say is that we call Sunday the Lord's Day and by the way it's not the Sabbath so the first day of the week doesn't replace like the Sabbath day it's ridiculous nowhere in the Bible does it say that actually the Sabbath has been done away as far as the idea of having to keep it and so that was a shadow of things to come I'm not against having a Sabbath but it's not something we have to keep it's not you know it's just like circumcision it's it's a veil of nothing now so but all that to say is that I thought that was interesting as far as just especially since we just went to Greece and just how they actually do their days and all that so go back to Luke chapter 24 and verse 4 so they don't find the body of Jesus they go there the stones rolled away and obviously in the other Gospels you can see just different points of view there's different information there's different things as far as what's being said and you know so some people like well was it one angel or was it two and you know like all this stuff is what you gotta understand is it's all of it and then sometimes you may just be seeing one piece of that story and then over here you're seeing another piece okay so the angel the Lord you know basically shining like a big light I mean that could be one and then you could have these in this story or in this gospel we see that there's two and another gospel you'll see that they're like in the tomb see they're sitting down where Jesus laid it's all true right I mean it's all it's all it's all true and instead of saying like well it's a contradiction maybe just say hey there's a lot more information that we're getting from each gospel that you know isn't stated in the other ones so in verse 4 here says in the came to pass as they were much perplexed there about behold two men stood by them in shining garments and as they were afraid and bow down their faces to the earth they said unto them why seek you the living among the dead he is not here but is risen remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee saying the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified in the third day rise again and they remembered his words and returned from the sepulcher and told all these things unto the 11 and to all the rest it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and other women that were with them which told these things unto the Apostles now Mary Magdalene is the first one to see Jesus actually that's story where we see him and she thinks he's the gardener and so she she actually sees him first obviously all these ladies see these two men you know and and hear all this stuff that's going on but the thing that's interesting about especially in the book of Luke when you see the account of the crucifixion and the death and the burial and the resurrection is how the women are always there you know I think you know obviously we're Baptist so we we don't believe women should teach or assert authority over the men but the loyalty and just the fact that the women stuck with Jesus through the whole thing that is a testament to the faith of women the men doubt in this story you know it's kind of a shame for men here because the women are the ones that listen look at what it says in verse 11 it says and their words seemed to them as idle tales and they believed them not then arose Peter and ran into the sepulcher stooping and stooping down and he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves and departed wandering in himself at that which was the that which was come to pass and there's just a lot of doubt I mean obviously you have Thomas that doubts even for a week you know because he didn't see him until later on but the thing that I keep that that just is interesting to me is the fact that the women as Jesus is going up to the cross in Luke it states the women are following in their weeping and he's stating to them daughters of Israel you know weep not for me but for yourselves then he's at the cross and guess who's at the cross the women now obviously we know that John was there too because in John in the book of John we had that story where Jesus looks at him and says behold thy mother you know and in that whole exchange as far as what's going on there so I'm not saying that no one there is there no none of the Apostles but the women are there when he's going through the cross the women are there when he when he's on the cross the women are there if you look him back in Luke chapter 23 when Joseph of Arimathea gets the body they're there when they take the body and wrap it and put it into the tomb they're there and guess who's there the moment that Jesus raises from the dead the women and guess who believes first the women and it's it's it just it kind of just sticks out the fact that the women have such great faith and just the loyalty the loyalty to the Lord that the women have and listen so so I know a lot of times women will get a bad rap in the Bible you know as far as obviously Eve is the first woman to eat man out of house and home right and and we're you know we're obviously when it comes to leadership you know you know the Bible talks about how Adam was not deceived but the woman being deceived was in a transgression but listen you know everything is pointed to this right here when you think about all these stories about David and Goliath and you think about all these different things that men have done in the Bible that obviously I look to and I want to aspire to I want to be like them but this is the the pivotal moment in history right here and who shines as far as humanity is concerned I believe the women shine in this and it's really the men that have to be beat over the head and say hey believe it you know and obviously Jesus is like he's a braiding them for their unbelief it's like what in the world I'm not saying the men weren't sad obviously they were I'm not saying the men didn't care about the Lord obviously they did right but the idea here is that the women were just like they didn't let it go they weren't letting it go when he went to the cross they weren't letting it go when he died and even when the body when they didn't find the body if you remember Mary Magdalene went before they knew they obviously doubted a little bit there in the fact that when the angel said that but even at that point they're just like tell me where his body is so I can get it so that's something especially in the book of Luke that just really sticks out is the fact that the women are the ones that were the first to believe Mary Magdalene was the first one to see Jesus and I believe then he showed himself to the other women as they were coming back and that bless think about it that blessing of being the first to see the Lord Jesus in his risen glorified body was given to the women and I don't think it's by accident because the women were there as he's going to the cross the women were there when he was on the cross the women were there when he was taken off the cross and the women were there the morning that he rose from the dead and so you know there's there's something to be said about that as far as there is difference between men and women and in this case that difference is a very good thing when it comes to that type of loyalty and attachment to being dependent on the Lord listen as men I think a lot of times we're we're independent which is obviously a trait that we have that's you know masculine and all that but there is something to be desired about that dependency of that women have in that dependency that they should have towards their husband but how much more to the Lord and how that's demonstrated here in his death and resurrection so go to uh you're there in Luke chapter 24 obviously keep your finger there but we're gonna see the story about these two men on the road to Emmaus and so but I want in Mark chapter 16 it alludes to this story okay and and in Mark chapter 16 verse 12 it says after that he appeared in another form so when it says after that he appears to Mary Magdalene first right and then to the ladies and all that but then it says in verse 12 after that he appeared in another form under the two under two of them as they walked and went into the country and they went and told it unto this residue neither believe they them so the Apostles are like and we'll get to that at the end here is that they still didn't believe you know they're still just like I you know is it really true you know and but the interesting thing about this story is the fact that it's kind of like Mary Magdalene that he thought he was the gardener and there's that Jesus was kind of conveying himself away from them to where he you couldn't recognize him and that obviously happened here where he was basically causing to where they he didn't look like him you know and so in verse 13 here we see the story where Jesus is gonna walk with these two men Cleopas Cleopas is one of them but in verse 13 it says behold two of them went that same day to to a village called Emmaus which was from Jerusalem about three skirt three squirts three skirt three score four longs so sixty four longs which is you know for longs about an eighth of a mile so what is that seven and a half there we go so seven have miles that that this distance is right here so in verse 14 it says and they talked together of all these things which had happened and it came to pass that while they commune together and reason Jesus himself drew near and went with them but their eyes were holding that they should not know him so and in market says that he he appeared unto them in another form but I think probably what it was is that he affected their vision to where he looked different right it may not be necessarily that he like was a shape-shifter right but more so the fact that he affected their vision that he looked different to them right and so but either way they didn't know it was him it says in verse 17 it says and he said unto them what manner communications are these that you have one to one to another as you walk in our sat so we see that obviously Jesus is communicating with them but we kind of see the fact that they're not they're obviously sorrowful and Jesus knows what they're talking about but obviously he's bringing it up to him because he wants to hear what they have to say about it in verse 18 it says and then one of them whose name was Cleopas answering said unto him art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem has not has not known the things which are come to pass there in these days and he said unto them what things so it does Jesus doesn't say I don't know what happened he's just saying what things you know what things you what are you referring to and so and it really does show you that everybody knew what happened it wasn't done in a corner somewhere and so when there's certain things in the Bible to where you're like is that a big deal that it states that I think that there's there's weird doctrines out there that want to make make this sound like this was done in the corner most people in Israel that know about it know everybody knew about it to the point where they're on the road to Emmaus and there's some ran you know they think some random guy just just walk in with them and they're like seven miles out from Jerusalem and he's saying how do you how do you not know what happened right so he says what things and they said unto him concerning Jesus of Nazareth which was what which was a prophet mighty indeed in word before God and all the people and how the chief priests in our rulers delivered that delivered him to be condemned to death and have crucified him but we trusted that he it had been he which should have redeemed Israel and beside all this today is the third day since these things were done now when you're reading through the Gospels it's kind of like didn't he say though on the third day he's gonna rise again like over and over and over and over again but this passage actually gives us a lot of information on the fact that why that wasn't clicking with them because it was actually information that was being withholding from them as far as like them really understanding what that meant I mean we're obviously high insights 20 2020 but at the same time you're kind of thinking like how did you not think about that you know when he said it so many times but in verse in verse 22 there says yay and certain women also of our company made us made us astonished which were early at the sepulcher and when they found not his body they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels which said that he was alive and certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher and found it even so as the women had said but him they saw not then he said unto them Oh fools and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken ought not Christ have suffered these things and to enter into his glory and beginning at Moses and all the prophets he expounded unto them and all the scriptures the things concerning himself now I don't know about you but I wish I could have been a fly on the road I don't know you know you say fly on the wall but I wish I could have just been there fly on the camel I don't know if they had one there but I wish I could have been there to hear what Jesus said about when he was expounding from Moses and all the prophets now maybe all of that's in the New Testament as far as you know in the epistles and different things maybe everything that he said is what we have written down maybe not you know and so it's just when I when I read this I'm just like I wish I would have I could have been there with Cleopas and we could have been walking I could have heard what he said was about him in the Old Testament okay because there's just so much that the more every time I read through the Old Testament like yep there's something else yep that ties in it's not like some new doctrine it's like yep that fits yep that's talking about him that was an allegory of that when I did the allegory the Old Testament New Testament I kept finding things I'm just like that fits that actually matches with everything that's going on and so so when we get to heaven I I I hope that I could just walk with my Savior and he could just say hey did you see that did you know about that how about this over here you didn't see that one did you you know I just like all those different things that I could still be learning when we're there so what verse was I on here verse 28 yeah yeah yeah I just got that one 27 yeah 28 it says and they drew nigh unto the village where they went and he made as though he would have gone further so this is you know something to think about when it comes to our Savior is that he doesn't force himself on us even after we're safe hey listen he doesn't force salvation on you because there's a condition if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shall believe in thy heart that God hath raised from the dead thou shalt be saved you know you have the free will choice whosoever will let him take up the water of life freely but even after we're saved he doesn't force us to serve him if you think about this he's he's going on he's basically walking as if he'd go further it's not that Jesus doesn't want to be with them and to commune with them it's just the fact that he's not gonna force he's not gonna be like hey can I stay over can I can I hang out with you guys you know can I lodge with you guys tonight so he's going as if you go further because he wants them to invite him and think about it in Revelation chapter 3 it says that he stands at the door and knocks I heard a preacher one time there was some clip where it talks about how Jesus just busts down the door I'm like how unscriptural could you be right I mean there's literally a passage where it says that he stands at the door and knocks he doesn't John McClain his way through that door and just like bust it down he knocks because you have to open the door and let him in and that passage isn't talking about salvation that passage is actually talking about getting right with God and commuting it says then and I will come in and sup with him which is exactly really what's going on here is that they come in and they break bread with them and actually that's when when they break bread as what we'll see here that's when they realizes the Lord now verse 29 here says but they constrained him saying abide with us I mean there's a whole sermon on this you know abiding with Christ abiding in the vine him coming in and abiding and making his abode with us this isn't talking about getting saved this is talking about communing and abiding with the Lord but it's not going to be forced it's something you have to choose to do and you have to invite him in abide with us for it is toward evening and the day day is far far spent and he went in to tarry with them and it came to pass as he sat at meet with them he took bread and blessed it and break and gave gave to them and their eyes were opened I mean think about this he's going as if you'd go further he's saying no come in and abide with us then he gives them you know they're eating bread and as they're eating the bread their eyes are open and they see him can you think about spiritually what this would mean like abiding with Christ the bread which is the Word of God right the man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that preceded out of the mouth of God they read the Word of God and boom they can see him because how you gonna see the Lord if you're not reading the Word of God so so there's just so much in here and obviously I'm just going through the whole chapter here so I don't want to just stick on this point but they their eyes were open and they knew him you want to know the Lord then you need to let him in let them abide abide with you need to need to eat the bread you need to eat the Word of God that's how you're gonna know the Lord they knew him and he vanished out of their sight and they said one to another did not our heart burn within us while he talked with us by the way and while he opened to us the scriptures you know it talks about Jeremiah talks about like how the Word of God is kind of like it's uh it's you know shut up in his bones and you know obviously the Mormons have abused this and the idea that's burning but you know burning in their bosom kind of thing but the Bible talks about this in the fact that you know the Word of God and just how it's like a fire right talks about how the Word of God is like a fire and like hammer it's sharp as two-edged sword and the idea there is the fact that I can't imagine you know like later on they're just like how do we not know that was the Lord you know when he was opening because he's obviously he was rebuking them before they even said come and abide with us and he's rebuking them for their unbelief and he was teaching them the fact that price needs to die and that you know this was this had to happen and all of that and so this this this road to Emmaus I love this story just because one I wish I could have been there when that was going on but just just the application of disciples that are sad disciples that are downtrodden and just how the Lord will walk with you in that first of all but then how he doesn't force himself upon you but then he'll act basically want you to ask him to abide with you and if you'll just let them in you sit down and break bread and you can your eyes will be open you can see the Lord and obviously the joy that comes with that now go to Luke chapter 24 and verse 33 notice it's a little over seven miles away that they they walked before they got to their place it says verse 33 and they wrote they rose up the same hour returned to Jerusalem so seven miles track back you know track back now those of us that were out in Greece we're like that's just another day in the park right you know we've walked like I don't know how many miles every single day that takes some time okay so I know that it what just going what going like two miles down down there it took us like 40 minutes you know when you're walking now maybe they were running you know at this point but but basically you think about that it's getting not it's nighttime at that point right it was coming evening the day is far spent then Jesus is abiding with them they're breaking bread at that point they're going in the dark back to Jerusalem and so they returned to Jerusalem and found the 11 gathered together and then that were with them saying the Lord has risen indeed and hath appeared to Simon and they told what things were done in the way and how he was known of them in in breaking of bread so there's a lot of things that are happening kind of Sam simultaneously or at least really close together because Peter sees I'm like all you know they see him you have Mary Magdalene and sees you know first and then the women that see him so there's a lot of stuff that's happening like kind of really close together on this day but at this point we're in the evening when you know this happens with those that are on the road Emmaus so as we keep going in the story here in verse 24 Jesus is gonna appear to them as they're there because in verse 36 there so Luke 24 verse 36 it says and as they thus spake Jesus himself stood in the midst of them and said unto them peace be unto you right so that evening he's there and notice you know go to John chapter 20 John chapter 20 I want you to know it's the same day obviously it makes sense right because they're saying this is the third day these things have happened and you know they're basically talking about everything they've gone on that day it's evening when they're when they get to their place they run back so it's still evening but in you're in John 20 but in March 16 14 it says afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meet and abraded them with with their unbelief and hardness of heart because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen so the eleven he's just he's abrading them for their unbelief because they didn't believe the women and all this stuff and then this is kind of all coming to a point where now you got these two disciples coming from the mass you know obviously everything's kind of coming to a vocal point here and this is where Jesus is appearing to the twelve and so and you can obviously see where it talks about how he appeared on the sea fist and unto the twelve and then the five hundred brethren at once it talks about that in first Corinthians chapter 15 and all that so we kind of see a little glimpse there that he appeared to Peter before at this point and so but in John chapter 20 verse 19 it says then the same day at evening being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews came Jesus and stood in the midst and saith unto them he's be unto you so here kind of gives you a lot of information but we're the same day it's at evening it's the first day of the week they're all assembled verse 20 it says and when he had so said he showed unto them his hands in his side then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord now go back to Luke chapter 24 and verse 37 here and this is something that I believe Luke hits on strong which is the bodily resurrection okay now obviously the other gospels hit on this as well obviously John chapter 20 you have the fact that he's telling Thomas to you know put his fingers into his hand and thrust his hand through his side you know obviously we're dealing physical body but here there's no doubt and if you think about it Luke is really the gospel that is focusing on the humanity of Christ the fact that God was manifest in the flesh in the end John more so is is focused on the deity of Christ the fact that he is the Son of God and that he came from God and that he's not of man you know and all of that but but Luke chapter Luke you know is dealing with obviously his birth that's a big point in Luke but also his lineage going back all the way to Adam and through Mary's lineage and the fact that that's where he got his his humanity from is that he was made of the seed of the woman made of a woman made under the law and so it's it's kind of a marvel that Luke is really gonna touch on the fact that this is a bodily resurrection now you say why why are you making a big point about that we believe in bodily resurrection but there there are false religions out there that don't obviously Jehovah Witnesses are one of the big cults out there that don't believe in a bodily resurrection they believe it's just spiritual and so but it Muslims also don't believe in this or they at least don't believe it's the same person but they don't believe in this body well they don't believe in the resurrection in general okay so but they don't believe it's the same person right there's a person of Jesus but if some different person that got crucified and he just died but Jesus just went up into heaven something like that you know but this debunks all of that this debunks this passage is gonna debunk the Jehovah Witnesses this is gonna debunk you know the Muslims Tyler Doka any other weirdo out there that's gonna preach anything other than the fact that Jesus physically rose from the dead and this is a big point that he physically rose from the dead and that the man Christ Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father bodily the man that was crucified on the cross who's both God and man is seated at the right hand of the Father right now making intercession for us it knows what it says here in verse 37 because this is gonna be just without a shadow of a doubt you're dealing with his body the body that was crucified is the same body that's standing right there with them obviously we know that it's been glorified right that we're dealing we're not dealing with the flesh and blood body that we have right now but a glorified body but it's still physical in the fact that they can touch it and they can you know all this stuff so and we're gonna all be like you know made like unto his glorious body as well so one day we'll have that resurrection as well physically speaking those who says here in verse 37 says but they were terrified and affrighted and suppose that they had seen a spirit so notice this premise here their base is thinking there must be a spirit right and Jehovah's Witnesses just stopped reading there and just say yeah it must be and they just like cut off the rest of this right or I don't know what their new world translation does but you know what they can they can take the the juicy slimy you know part of a marshmallow that has no taste in it apparently according to them in job and shove it if you don't know about that where it talks about in job where it says that you know can any man taste the white of an egg it says is there any taste in the slimy juice of a marshmallow I think they actually changed it in their last edition because they got made fun of so bad for that so you can probably have to find the earlier edition than the new one that they have but you have to be that smart to be a Bible translator so we see here that there are Friday they think it's the spirit and notice what says in verse 38 and he said it to them why are you Trump why are you trouble and why do thoughts arise in your hearts behold my hands and my feet that it is I myself this is how like some other person just like oh no that that's a different person that died over there and I'm you know you know that was I just I you know basically it was an effigy or something like that they just they just it wasn't even a real person over there or it was just someone that some doppelganger you know that they came in and died now it's I myself handle me and see for spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me have so he has flesh he has bones and that means that our our spiritual body is gonna have flesh and bones now flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of God but apparently flesh and bone does obviously when it's regenerated and renewed and all of that in verse 40 here it says and when he had thus spoken he showed him his hands and his feet and while while they yet believe not for joy and wondered he said it to them have ye here any meat so basically he's like handle me take a hold of me you know like my hands my feet and this is where you have like first John 1 1 right it says that which was from the beginning which we have seen with our eyes which we have looked upon her hands of handled of the word of life her life was manifesting we have seen it and bear witness and showing to you that eternal life which was with the father and was manifested unto us they handled him they saw him right the word of life because the word was made flesh and they handled him when he was risen from the dead they had obviously they I mean they they obviously handled him before he died but when he was risen from the dead in his glorified body he says handle me and see and if that wasn't proof enough he's like he asked if they have any meat in verse 42 it says they gave him a piece of a broiled fish and of a honeycomb and he took it and did eat before them so you know Casper the friendly ghost doesn't eat okay spirits don't eat food physical food he literally ate that fish and he literally ate that piece of the honeycomb right and there's a lot of things to understand here besides the fact that obviously he has a physical resurrection Jesus obviously stated this very beginning of the book of John because at the beginning of the book of John it says destroy this temple and then after three days I'll raise it up again and they're like 46 46 years was a temple building without rear it up in you know three days but it says but he spake of the temple of his body so from the very beginning he's saying it's a physical bodily resurrection Jesus said that's the way it was gonna be that's exactly what it was in here not only did he say handle me and see he literally ate a fish and you know part of a honeycomb and this also shows me too which I'm really excited about is that we're gonna eat stuff in heaven so well we have we have that glorified body we're gonna eat things and honey is one of those things that we can eat I'm not that excited about the fish but I don't know if we're eating fish in heaven I mean that I don't think that'll probably be the case but all I have to say is that whatever we have in heaven I'm sure it's gonna be delicious but it talk it does talk about us eating you know and all of that and so one it shows you we have a physical there's a physical bodily resurrection but then also the fact that there's some information you kind of see about our final state of being because our bodies gonna be like under his body which is interesting because the doors were shut but then he appeared there right so it's kind of it's kind of like this physical yet spiritual at the same time so it's very interesting in the fact that he can just kind of just appear where he wants to appear and the doors are shut he doesn't have to be you know so it's just something interesting to think about about how things will be when we're in our you know glorified state bodily speaking so we go back to Luke chapter 24 Luke chapter 24 verse 44 so whenever someone is like saying you know it's just spiritual resurrection take him to Luke chapter 24 or John chapter 2 where it says he spake of the temple of his body that that's what he was gonna raise up but also notice that Jesus says destroy this temple and I will raise it up there's there's a lot of information and a lot of doctrine just in that that that phrase right there destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up because you know it says that his soul was not left in hell neither his flesh and see corruption this Jesus had God raised up where of we all are witnesses now the Bible says that the Father raised up Jesus the Bible says that the Spirit raised up Jesus but Jesus says I will raise it up and another place that also says I have power to take you know to lay down my life and I have power to take it again right so meaning this is that yet he obviously is able to bring himself back so what you have the Trinity the Father Son only goes raised him from the dead and obviously showing some showing his deity there now in Luke 24 verse 44 here this is where the scriptures are opened up unto them specifically about the operation in which Jesus was going to save them from their sins the death barrel resurrection and this is something that I think it's kind of a mystery and I'm not saying that I'm gonna just like reveal this mystery as far as why this is the case but it just is the case is the fact that the fact that he was gonna die and rise against our day was hidden from their minds and actually look at look at Luke chapter 18 and I know I hit on this before when we were in Luke chapter 18 but it's been a little while I want you to see that passage first before we read this because in Luke chapter 18 verse 31 Luke chapter 18 verse 31 it says then he took unto him the 12 and said unto them behold we go up to Jerusalem and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man shall be accomplished for he shall be delivered unto Gentiles and shall be mocked and and spitefully entreated and spit it on and they shall scourge him and put him to death in the third day he shall rise again verse 34 and they understood none of these things now and most of the Gospels it'll kind of say that right is that they didn't understand what he was saying and they were afraid to ask him you know it's like that's kind of a common thing that was stated when he was stated but here it says and this saying was hid from them neither knew they the things which were spoken so it's interesting that Luke puts in that little information because in Luke chapter 24 notice what it says in verse in verse 45 here I actually just look at verse 44 says and he said to them these these are the words which I which I spake unto you while I was yet with you that all things must be fulfilled which are which were written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and the Psalms concerning me then opened he their understanding that they might understand the scripture so notice that that Jesus was holding that information back from them so it's not that they didn't believe they were just willingly ignorant of it and they just didn't want to believe it Jesus was holding that information back from them and then he opened it up unto them and you say why here's the thing it doesn't really matter why it's just he did I'm not saying I'm not saying I don't want to know why okay but he he did because it says in verse 46 and he said unto them thus it is written and doesn't behoove Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem and ye are witnesses of these things so this is obviously the Great Commission about preaching the gospel to every creature and obviously one thing to note there is not repentance of sins it's repentance and remission of sins need to be preached because the baptism of repentance is for the remission of sins it's not repentance of sins and remission of sins and so I think this is interesting because obviously it does kind of give a little light to the fact of like why didn't they know like why was this like why were they alluded to this why why were they just like kept from this because Jesus was holding it back from them for a reason now I think I think about this because you say well how does it what's the application here I think there's some times where there's information that may be easily understood it's not that it's hard to understand necessarily but God keeps that information back for us until the time of their appropriate time and we don't always know the reasoning but know this is that his thoughts are above our thoughts his ways are above our ways and you know just as much as the the reprobate doctrine as far as why does he harden some people right he'll have mercy on whom he will have mercy and whom he will he harden it and and we can all understand the doctrine right we understand that he hardens people and we know what happens but then you have to understand why does he do it and sometimes the Bible gives us information he did it to Pharaoh so that the world would know his power and that obviously more people would believe so we kind of see into his mind as far as his reasoning and there I'm sure is a reasoning on why he did that with his disciples a very valid obviously God's right obviously Jesus was right to do this but it's it I I like the fact that he shows us that he did it though because there's this this notion out there that the disciples were just like unbelievers until after the resurrection or something like that right well they're just like well they didn't even understand he's gonna rise from the dead so therefore they were unbelievers no they were believers it's just that that information right there was being hid from them and it wasn't so after the resurrection that he that he opened their their understanding to that that was Jesus's plan that's what Jesus wanted that's what he did now after he rose from the dead he abraded them for for not like it's kind of like at this point like you should believe this now right because I'm here you see me like you know at that point he's abrading them for their unbelief right so the book of Luke really does open that information there like I said it's a it's a whole nother thought process to kind of think about why and you can maybe think about the fact that hey God and his determinant counsel and foreknowledge of God caused everything to happen in the way it happened but he doesn't affect free will so think about that for a second we're in a world that's in motion everything that God does he knows every free will action that's going to be done based off that one thing he does and maybe there's the idea of them knowing and knowing that he has to do that would have affected what was going to happen you know I I don't know I'm just I'm just saying that God's mind as far as everything happened to happen everything to line up for everything to be fulfilled there's certain things that it's not it's not he's not affecting their free will but he could maybe block you from understanding something so you don't do something that would affect it okay I'm just thinking out loud here but I'm just saying that I just think about the fact that how God does things knowing that he can't force people to do that he can't force his his will on anybody they have to make their free will choices and he does things knowing that hey when he does this this person's gonna do this because he he for knows what they're gonna do okay so Luke chapter 24 and verse 49 we see where Jesus ascends and the thing that I want to kind of just the last thing I want to show here is the fact of how this parallels with acts chapter 1 and I believe it's very obvious that Luke wrote acts okay one because he's writing to the same person so Luke is written to Theophilus acts is written Theophilus and he even says the former treaty the treatise that I've written unto you right so you say well how do you know it's Luke well it doesn't say Luke unto Theophilus but at the same time who was always with Paul in his writings because I think I seem to remember there's a place where it says only Luke is with me so when you're reading the book of Acts and most of its about Paul when you especially when you get to the end of it right it kind of makes sense that Luke was probably there with him to know what was going on that Luke was on that boat and everything when everything went haywire with Yerakalodon the dinosaur I mean the storm that Luke was there but I wanted you to kind of see this but that it Luke really kind of just kind of recaps the end of I'm sorry acts really kind of recaps the end of Luke and goes further so in Luke chapter 24 verse 49 says and behold I send the promise of my father upon you but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high now you can already see the correlation there with Acts chapter 1 dealing with the Holy Ghost coming and everything it says and he led them out as far as to Bethany and he lifted up his hands and blessed them and it came to pass while he blessed them he was parted from them and carried up into heaven and they worshipped him and and returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God amen so we see him ascending but we don't see a lot of information about it now go to Acts chapter 1 they go out to Bethany so that's the area now here they're gonna be on the Mount of Olives but that's where the Mount of Olives is at okay so but in Acts chapter 1 and verse 1 here says the former treatise have I made O Theophilus of all that Jesus began both to do and teach until the day in which he was taken up well that's really where Luke ends isn't it where he ascends up so it makes sense that the former treatise have written unto you of everything he did up to where he was taken up into heaven right then it goes on after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the Apostles whom he had chosen to whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs being seen of them forty days speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God so he's kind of filling in information that we didn't see in Luke which is the fact that it's 40 days before he was ascended up right that he was showing himself and there's other stories obviously in the gospel like in John chapter 21 where he shows himself and all that but in verse 4 here it says it says in being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father which said he ye have heard of me that's exactly what it says in Luke chapter 24 for John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence and the day of Pentecost is coming obviously which 40 days being seen of him the 50th day is the day of Pentecost when they therefore were come together they asked of him saying Lord wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel and he said unto them it is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father hath put in his own power but ye shall shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost parts of the earth and when he had spoken these things while they beheld he was taken up and a cloud received them out of their sight so that's where Luke ends right but you see kind of like some information in between there as far as before he's taken up he's seen 40 days and this last little bit of conversation where Jesus said they're gonna be a dude with power but this conversation about the kingdom of Israel coming in all this and he's saying you need you're gonna be witnesses right and we know that it's been two almost two thousand years since this point right in verse 10 it says while they they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up behold two men stood by them in white apparel which also said ye men of Galilee why stand ye gazing up into heaven this same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven then return they in unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day's journey which is how Luke ends right and then the whole book of Acts is just continuing on with the story so when you think about Luke and Luke Luke and Acts are like pretty much just they kind of overlap a little bit if you think about the events where it kind of gives you a little more information about that what happened at the end there and then it just continues on the story until you get to the end of the story where where Paul's just in his halfway house receiving friends right but but that's the book of Luke I really enjoyed going through the book of Luke and just seeing all the details there's so many unique stories in the Gospel of Luke and so again I haven't picked another I haven't picked a book yet when it comes to what we're going to go through starting next week but send me in your requests and I might not pick any of them I don't know no I'm just kidding I'll pick one of them but it's not a democracy I want you to know that it's not like hey whoever picks the most I'm gonna see what you guys want and I'm gonna pick what I want out of that okay so okay so you know I'm a part of this church too you know you know I want I want to pick but but yeah no I'm curious I'm just curious on what you guys maybe would want to get into I I do I was thinking about going through like first and second Samuel that was one that I was thinking of well two actually but anyway we'll see but let's end with a word of prayer down I follow we think today thank you for your word thank you for the book of Luke and what an amazing book what an amazing gospel and I know Lord that that I can only really scratch the surface with all the information that is in the book of Luke and Lord just prayed you'd help us to read it and to understand it as we go throughout our years as Christians and Lord just thank you for all all the information that you've given us and Lord thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and ultimately raising again from the dead and we just thank you for your compassion for your love that you showed us and that you continue to show us and Lord we love you and pray all this in Jesus Christ's name amen for the day will come sing one more song and then we'll be dismissed all right take your song books and turn to song 135 135 in your song books will sing I know I am saved if you would stand we'll sing song 135 I know I am saved for Christ set me free he ransomed my poor soul on the course of Calvary and now I can see for Christ is my King I'll see his face in glory by and by you're dismissed
