so praise God for that and we praise God for Faithful Word Baptist Church thank you again for the invitation tonight Revelation chapter 2 and verse number 9 the title of my sermon this evening is the synagogue of Satan the synagogue of Satan verse number 9 of chapter 2 says I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are of the synagogue of Satan now just in case you missed it the first time just in case you misunderstood verse number 9 of chapter 2 just in case someone misinterpreted it for you just in case you read a commentary on it that stated that it's not saying what it clearly says that it says it also repeats it in chapter 3 and verse number 9 chapter 3 verse number 9 says behold I will make them of the synagogue of Satan which say they are Jews and are not but do lie behold I will make them to come and worship before thy feet and to know that I have loved thee and this evening I want to preach on the subject of the synagogue of Satan the assembly of Satan this congregation of the devil that the Lord Jesus Christ is referring to here now this is a passage that Christian Zionists avoid at all costs because of the fact that it's so damning to the subject of Zionism, dispensationalism and in fact if you've gotten into a conversation with any of these people who believe that the Jews are God's chosen people who support the state of Israel they will never quote this passage they'll go to Genesis chapter 12 they'll go to Old Testament passages regarding the covenant but they will avoid Revelation 2-9 and Revelation 3-9 like the plague now why is that? because of the fact that it says synagogue of Satan and here's the thing is that whenever I get into a conversation with people like this who believe that the Jews are God's chosen people and we should bless Israel and this that and the other you know I let them say their peace and let them quote Genesis 12 and let them quote all these Old Testament passages regarding the old covenant and I just kind of listen for a little bit and just kind of make them think man you've got a point there Genesis chapter 12 okay maybe you have a point there and then this is what I answer with what does Jesus say though? because really that's the most important thing now Genesis is still the word of God Galatians 3.16 is definitely the word of God the entire book of Romans is definitely the word of God but here's a great question to ask so what does Jesus have to say about the Jews? and you know what? they just never want to answer that they always want to talk about everything else and what everyone else is saying and what John Nelson Darby is teaching and what C.I. Scofield says in his footnotes and what Clarence Larkin wrote or made in his charts but they never want to address the simple question of what about Jesus though? what did he say about the Jews? and I'm going to tell you why they don't want to address it it's because of the fact that he calls them probably the most crazy thing ever which is the synagogue of Satan and they would consider that to be anti-Semitic and they would say well that's kind of blasphemous and you're misinterpreting that but really how can you misinterpret synagogue of Satan? you know this is a very elementary statement there it's not cryptic at all but he says they would say they are Jews and are not but are of the synagogue of Satan and you know you hear different people giving different interpretations to this and probably one of the most common ones that I hear is like well this is referring to Christians who call themselves Jews and you know I do that look again and I say you know I don't call myself a Jew you know I don't go to a synagogue either and when I read the New Testament I just don't find any Christian calling themselves Jews but if we were to take that interpretation it actually would not be blasphemous for a Christian to call themselves a Jew according to the Bible why? because the Bible clearly says that he is not a Jew which is one outwardly neither is that circumcision outward in the flesh but he is a Jew which is one inwardly and circumcision is that of the heart and not in the letter but of the spirit whose praise is not a member of God now I'm not saying we should just go out these doors and start saying that we're Jews probably not the best idea I'm just saying if you did it wouldn't be blasphemous as these people claim it is but Christian Zionists avoid this statement like the plague and quite frankly it is one of the most controversial verses in the Bible that dispensationalists will avoid as much as possible because it's authority the entire word of God is authoritative but it's coming from the Lord Jesus Christ himself and I just find it interesting that he repeats it twice and I also find it interesting that it's in chapter 2 verse number 9 and in case you can't find it where it's mentioned the second time it's okay here's a good way to remember it it's in chapter 3 verse number 9 as well he repeats it twice now the question tonight is why does he call them the synagogue of Satan well before I get into that I have some introductory statements here and the first thing I want to talk about is what is a synagogue? that's a good question what is a synagogue? well synagogue literally means a gathering an assembly so you know we never want to think that there's something inherently wrong with the term synagogue it's not like there's something wicked about it it's literally just a phrase or a term that's used to describe an assembly of people or a gathering now here's the thing is that in the New Testament where in the Greek word the Greek word that's being used for gathering or assembly is synagogue you know you read James chapter 2 when it talks about a man coming into your assembly the word that's being used there is synagogue and that goes to show us that that's simply that's what it means it means an assembly people who congregate but you know we never want to use it to describe the house of God because of the fact that it carries with it a negative connotation we know that when we talk about a synagogue we're talking about a Christ rejecting religion that hates the Lord Jesus Christ and therefore we never want to talk about the house of God as being a synagogue let's talk about it being the house of God the assembly of God the congregation of God, the church of God but what is a synagogue? where do they come from? well synagogues when you think about it if you study this out they weren't assemblies they were sanctioned by God you know because it's pretty interesting when you look at it in the Bible you realize that it's not instituted in the Old Testament when you read the Old Testament God never told Moses, he never told any of the prophets hey create this assembly known as the synagogue there will be an alternative to the temple if people aren't able to go to the temple they can just meet in synagogues it was never a thing you know and aside from the fact that it's briefly mentioned in Psalm 74 and it doesn't really give a whole lot of context we can come to the conclusion that synagogues were man-made they were not God-made God did not sanction this he didn't institute synagogues this is something that the nation of Israel Jews came up with in order to meet in for prayer worship, to be reading the scriptures things of that nature and then you know all of a sudden in the New Testament you just see them sprout out you know you see synagogues mentioned everywhere you just verse after verse chapter after chapter in the gospels synagogues is very much a prominent location in the New Testament and it's very prominent when it comes to the religion of Judaism and when you really study this out you realize well if synagogues were not sanctioned by God if they were man-made the purpose of them was really essentially if someone couldn't make it to the temple they would just assemble together with other Jews to read the scriptures to pray together, to worship so essentially there were like paratemple ministries this is kind of like a paratemple ministry right where it's not necessarily a bad thing because they're gathering together to meet to read the law of Moses to pray together, to worship together to talk about the God of the Bible but it's not necessarily something that God said hey this is what you should do well later on you have the destruction of the temple around 586 B.C. through the Babylonian conquest there and at that point, you know, the destruction of the temple there's no centralized place for the Jews to worship so they go into Babylon and obviously at that point synagogues though existing beforehand became even more prominent thereafter because they really don't have a place of worship so they're meeting in different places reading the scriptures, so on and so forth well then obviously we know that the Jews end up coming back to the land and they were able to reconstruct the temple once again, but here's the thing so much time had passed between the destruction of the temple and them coming back that those places of worship those assemblies, those synagogues just became a permanent thing in their Jewish culture you just have synagogues everywhere and obviously if they're not doing anything that's anti-biblical if they're not teaching anything that's wrong or heretical, they're just meeting to read the scriptures they're just meeting to worship together you know, what's the harm in it, right? and you can think of this kind of like the way I would compare it to today Bible college Sunday school classes Bible college is not in the Bible, right? Bible college is a parachurch ministry that was created by man and we can say that they were started with the best of intentions they were started to teach the Bible to prepare people for the work of the ministry you know, they're preaching the word of God they're trying to prepare pastors and missionaries and evangelists it's not necessarily the way that God sanctioned it to be but, you know, they exist for that purpose right? Sunday school class you know, if you've ever been to a Sunday school class you know that they're teaching the Bible it's probably not the best environment for you you sing a bunch of stupid songs as a kid you know, along with it but in general, they're teaching the Bible they're teaching about David and Goliath about Noah's flood various stories in the Bible and it kind of works you know, it's a good alternative, right? you know, if you have a child you don't really know what to teach the child so there's some positives to these institutions but let me just say this like with any other institution that's not sanctioned by God it can be corrupted you know what, the synagogue though it started off as a good thing became corrupted severely corrupted it was a legitimate solution to a problem but then we see that it became corrupted and, you know, even in the New Testament we read in Acts chapter 15 verse number 21 says for Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day you know, that's a positive, right? you know, all around the world because not just in Israel there's synagogues all over the Gentile nations there's synagogues and converts to Judaism and they're assembling together in these synagogues and they're reading the law of Moses so people are hearing Moses being preached people are talking about it so that's a good thing, right? however, as we know they cease being an institution where they would just meet and hear the word of God and they became permanent institutions with very powerful and influential leadership that ended up corrupting the nation of Israel and we see that by the time of Christ synagogues were not just widely accepted as being legitimate institutions you know, they were highly respected and revered of the Jews and they were centers of religion but the Pharisees took over and the Pharisees obviously by and large were false prophets who ended up corrupting that Old Testament religion through their oral traditions you say, really? are synagogues that bad? well, put it this way the rulers of the synagogues were the ones responsible for spearheading the crucifixion of Christ right? they're the ones responsible for heading up the rebellion against biblical religion and causing Jesus Christ to be crucified and that's why it's called a synagogue of Satan and then especially after 70 AD the destruction of the temple you know, because of their rejection of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ prophesied of this in Luke chapter 21 that Israel would be destroyed the temple would be destroyed we know that in 70 AD the Roman Emperor Titus came and just completely demolished Israel and the temple and then you have the Jews being dispersed into all nations well at that point, more synagogues are created and the Pharisees still have a foothold on the Jews of that day on Jewish worship and that essentially is the foundation the fundamental foundation for rabbinic Judaism of today which by the way is obviously a Christ rejecting religion go to Matthew chapter 23 if you would, Matthew chapter 23 Matthew chapter 23 tonight we're going to talk about the synagogue of Satan and I got a few points tonight, you know I'm not going to ask if this is my cup every time I do someone says yes, but brother Segura just put Pastor Mejia there now so now I know for a fact this is my cup we're going to go to about 9 tonight I'm just kidding why did Jesus call them the synagogue of Satan? Point number one of why he called them the synagogue of Satan is because of the fact that their ministers are agents of Satan and when I talk about the synagogue of Satan I'm not just referring to those in the first century AD I'm talking about the ministers today are ministers they're agents of Satan there's nothing godly about them there's nothing biblical about them there's nothing Jewish about them folks, let me just tell you right now they are agents and ministers of Satan himself why? well, let's talk about the leadership even in the first century AD synagogues weren't instituted by god therefore they didn't have sanctioned leaders anything that god institutes as being a sanctioned place for people to meet for his people to meet, he always places what? leaders in those areas, right? when you have the temple that is sanctioned by god you have the Levites who are leading you have leadership there in order to keep checks and balances, to teach the word of god god ordains leadership for his institutions, even in the New Testament the local New Testament church is not a free for all there's leadership there, right? the Bible tells us that he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists and some pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the body of Christ there is church sanctioned there is leadership in a local assembly that's sanctioned by god folks, a synagogue doesn't have that find me a verse in the Old Testament where god said, hey, you got a synagogue alright, this is the leadership that's going to be in the synagogue well you said then what's the point of even making a synagogue or creating a synagogue in the Old Testament well it's just like having a soul winning group out somewhere where they don't have a church put it that way, right? that's a good comparison if you have places, you know, in the United States that don't have a local New Testament church but you have a group of believers there they can kind of meet together read the Bible together, sow in together they have that group there, right? that nucleus, even though it's not necessarily a group that's sanctioned by god to be a church they're assembling together they're synagoguing together in order to worship together, right? but here's the thing is that sometimes even groups like that can go bad because then you have someone who's hungry for power they take over and if there's not a pastor there to lead that it can go awry which is exactly what happened to the synagogues the temple had the Levites local New Testament churches have leadership but notice that none of the leadership that's mentioned in the Bible for the temple for the church, includes rabbis masters lawyers and definitely doesn't include Pharisees these were made up titles for these men who ended up taking over these synagogues and creating this Christ-hating religion that we know today now, as far as the origins of Pharisees, people say various things, I believe that they originated after the Maccabean revolt circa 165 150, it's not necessarily clear I'm not staunch on that, but I believe that's possibly when they came about it's not very clear, but what is clear is that the Pharisees eventually seized leadership within synagogues and created a hierarchy of sorts with themselves at the top so how do you know that? because you just read the New Testament they're the rulers, they're the ones with the most influence, they're the ones who give the green light to kick someone out of the synagogue if someone is accepting Christ if they're believing on Christ the Pharisees had the power to boot them out of the synagogue, that's a lot of power you say, really did they have that much power? they had the power to influence the masses to agree with them in crucifying Jesus Christ think about that so somewhere along the line, these Pharisees ended up seizing power there's a vacuum of leadership within synagogues they were man-made, they took over and what did they do? they seized power they uplifted their oral traditions over the word of God and that's how we have modern day rabbinic Judaism look at Matthew chapter 23 if you would Matthew chapter 23 when it comes to the Pharisees who essentially are the architects of rabbinic Judaism of today they promoted Moses with no intention to actually obey it themselves so when they say oh yeah, we're of Moses, we're of Abraham liars? no you're not look at verse number 1 now some would say that Moses' seat was referring to an actual position in a synagogue a place of authority we can also interpret this to mean that they're coming in the authority of Moses they're coming in the power and the authority of Moses because they're using the scriptures they're sitting in Moses' seat coming with his authority so he goes on to say in verse 3 that observer knew so Jesus says hey, the Pharisees and the scribes they come in the authority of Moses they're reading from the Torah they're reading from the first five books of the Bible they're quoting Moses and so whenever you're hearing them talk about Moses do as they say because they're quoting Moses sounds reasonable but it says do not ye after their works for they say and do not now there's a word in the English language that describes what this is referring to it's called a hypocrite and that's exactly what this entire chapter talks about how hypocritical they are in their so-called service because they're telling people obey Moses, we're of Moses you need to listen to Moses but they don't obey Moses they don't even believe in Moses they don't believe any of his writings as we're going to see later on this is referring to the fact that they promote Moses but in all actuality they don't believe Moses they're promoting him in order to defect from what they truly believe which is their oral traditions because folks, if someone in the Old Testament believed Moses believing Moses would lead them to Christ you know, reading about Moses would condition them to accept the coming Christ would point them to the Lord Jesus Christ why? because the law is our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, the Bible says and so if someone claims to believe in Moses but it doesn't lead them to Christ then they're lying because that's the intention of reading the law of Moses that's the intention of reading the Old Testament it's like someone says well I'm a truther are you saved? no, I don't even believe in God you're a liar oh you're not a truther, you're a liar you're a liar is what you are you're like well I'm a truther okay, what do you believe about salvation? well I think you have to repent of your sins well this is what the Bible says about salvation that it's not by works, it's not by repenting of your sin you know, it's by your faith alone in Jesus Christ the Bible literally says believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved you give them all the verses and they're like you give them all the sins and you gotta do works although you're not really a truther because a true truther will lead you to the foot of the cross to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and reject all other gospels that teach a false way of salvation you know it reminds me yesterday we went out soul winning with our church and one of the last doors that I knocked on or right before I knocked it had a sticker on the window that said believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved I was like man, this is easy money here either I'm just gonna meet a brother in Christ or I'm just not even gonna open up my Bible just point to the verse on the window right? so the guy opens the door and I start talking to him and it just realized very soon that the guy's not even saved I was like what do you have to do to be saved? he's like oh you have to follow Jesus Christ and you know you try to cut people some slack and I'm just like what do you mean by that exactly? well you have to keep the commandments you have to do this and that and I said well your window says I said your window says you have to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved why you got that on your window if you don't believe that why is this on your window? and he's just like oh yeah you gotta do that but no no no buts that's it you put it on your window I didn't put that there you put it on your window let me tell you something let me just tell you something right now he could claim he believes the Bible but obviously he clearly doesn't hey he could put that sticker on his window all he wants doesn't mean anything doesn't mean he believes in Acts chapter 16 verse 31 I'll tell you why because he didn't believe the truth and you know what these Pharisees what they did and just like the Pharisees of today the rabbinic Judaism Pharisees of today the Jews of today they can claim they believe in the Bible they can claim they believe in the God of the Bible they're lying why? we see that the reason they're taking leadership in these synagogues is because for the benefit of those who want the truth they want the preeminence among the Jewish people not with the intention to actually help someone spiritually no, they have this intention, this motive to just be important before the people the false prophets look what it goes on to say in verse number let's read verse number 7 again Jesus rebuking them says for one is your master even Christ and all ye are brethren and call no man father upon the earth for one is your father which is in heaven neither be ye called masters for one is your master even Christ so here he's telling Jesus Christ is showing us that the Pharisees are taking this leadership they're leading the Jewish people not because they have the intention to help them spiritually they want to be called Rabbi, Rabbi they want to be called Master they want to be called Father they want these lofty titles not because they have some intention to help people spiritually it's because they love to have the preeminence among the Jews, and by the way this is a good verse for the Catholics to memorize too by the way let's just repeat it, verse number 9 call no man father upon the earth who would you call your dad though? because we see that they are putting in all this effort all of this work they're compassing land and sea they're going to Crete they're going to Thessalonica they're going to Greece in order to preach their false gospel and what are their converts? reprobates two-fold more child of hell than yourselves he's basically saying they're worse reprobates than you pretty powerful words that the Lord Jesus Christ is using here and we can see why he would call them the synagogue of Satan you're an assembly of ministers of Satan is basically what he's saying why? brothers and sisters in Christ are not just Gentile you know the Apostle Peter is my brother in Christ too and you know what I'm preaching what he said the Apostle Paul is my brother in Christ too and I'm just preaching what he said we both agree as the election but Israel in my opinion is a cursed nation and we see that over the last 2000 years no it's because they're being persecuted for you know being God's chosen people no they're being persecuted because they're wicked let's call a spade a spade why don't you go ahead and look at the history folks I mean Pastor Anderson has been kicked I don't know how many countries has he been kicked out of who knows is it still rolling still going he's been kicked out of a lot of countries he's banned from a lot of countries but why? I'll tell you why because he preaches the gospel because he preaches the word of God you know are they being kicked out because they're preaching the word of God are they being excommunicated are they being excommunicated from nations over the last 2000 years because they exalt Christ because they exalt the word of God because they're winning people to Christ uh uh I'll tell you why it's because they hate Jesus Christ it's a curse upon them look at Deuteronomy 4 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land where until ye go over Jordan to possess it ye shall not prolong your days upon it but ye shall utterly be destroyed and the Lord shall scatter you among the nations and ye shall be left few in number among the heat and whether the Lord shall lead you and there ye shall serve gods the work of men's hands you know Rem-fan wood and stone which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell the Bible says and I have a lot of other verses that I want to go over but I'm completely out of time the point that I'm making here is that the reason they're the synagogue of Satan is because they are a cursed nation who takes credit for the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ you know I'm not interested in talking to people who when I mention Jesus Christ they spit on the floor and here's my last point, I'm done why did he call him the synagogue of Satan? Pastor, why would he use such language? I'll tell you why because their ministers are the agents of Satan check they don't worship the same God as we do check they uphold the Talmud over the word of God check they crucify the Lord Jesus Christ and take credit for it, check and lastly, they have a different Messiah go even with John chapter 5 John chapter 5 now people differ on this and if you differ on this, it's all good we still believe the same thing when it comes to our position of replacement theology but I do believe that the Antichrist will be a Jew that's my position, that's what I believe I believe the Bible is pretty consistent when it talks about that and you know some people believe that maybe he's not a Jew but he's going to use the Jews let's just all collectively agree the Jews are somehow involved though but I personally believe that he will be a Jew because it says in John chapter 5 verse 42 but I know you that you have not loved Jesus I know you that you have not the love of God in you I am come in my father's name and he received me not if another shall come in his own name him, ye, will receive and obviously the ye can be applied to just anybody all around the world but he's talking to Jews though and he's saying that there's going to come someone in the future and he's saying that there's going to come someone in the future who the nation of Israel, the Jews are going to receive if he comes in his own name and you know what, there's no coincidence why the pre-tribulation rapture is so popular although I think now it's losing momentum but it's been popular for a long time because the pre-trib rapture teaches that Jesus Christ will come first and the anti-Christ comes second whereas the chronology of the Bible teaches that the anti-Christ comes first and the anti-Christ comes second whereas the chronology of the Bible teaches that the anti-Christ comes first the only imminency in end times Bible prophecy is the coming of the anti-Christ not Jesus Christ which is why Jesus had to say Matthew 24 verse 5 that people are going to come saying I am Christ and shall deceive many and what does Christ mean? Messiah no one else uses that terminology other than Christians and Jews it's an anti-Christ religion it's a synagogue of Satan because they don't want Jesus they have their false Jesus they have their anti-Christ Jesus they have their anti-Christ Messiah what is the point that I'm making this evening? I'm just reminding you why Jesus called them the synagogue of Satan and obviously we want to have a balanced view and not harbor hatred towards them if there's people out there that are lost who genuinely want to be saved I have former Jews in my church who got saved thank God for that amen and I remember when he first came to our church and he got saved he came to our church he didn't tell us he was a Jew for a long time because he had heard my preaching beforehand and he was just like man I wonder what he's going to say when he finds out he said what did you do? We threw him out no I'm just kidding we didn't throw him out how does it feel now? he believes the Bible and he's a great Christian he's a great man of God and you know what?
