We'll be in second samuel chapter 12 So So So Good evening tonight. We're in second samuel chapter number 12 Second samuel 12 and the bible reads The lord sent nathan unto david and he came unto him and said unto him There were two men in one city one the one rich and the other poor the rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds But the poor man had nothing save one little ewe lamb Which he had bought and nourished up and it grew up together with him and with his children He did eat of his own meat and drink of his own cup and lay in his bosom and was unto him as a daughter And there came a traveler unto the rich man And he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd to dress for the wayfaring man That was come unto him but took the poor man's lamb and dressed it for the man that was come to him And david's anger was greatly kindled against the man and he said to nathan As the lord liveth the man that hath done this thing shall surely die And he shall restore the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and because he had no pity And nathan said to david thou art the man Thus saith the lord god of israel I anointed the king over israel and I delivered thee out of the hand of saul And I gave thee thy master's house and thy master's wives into thy bosom and gave thee the house of israel of juda and of juda And if that had been too little I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things Wherefore has thou despised the commandment of the lord to do evil in his sight? Thou has killed uriah the Hittite with a sword and has taken his wife to be thy wife And has slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon Now therefore the sword shall never never depart from thine house because thou has despised me And has taken the wife of uriah the Hittite to be thy wife Thus saith the lord behold I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house And I will take thy wives before thine eyes and give them unto thy neighbor and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this son For thou didst secretly But I will do this thing before all israel and before the son And david said unto nathan I have sinned against the lord And nathan said unto david the lord also hath put away thy sin thou shalt not die How be it because by this deed thou has given great occasion to the enemies of the lord to blaspheme? The child also that is born into thee shall surely die And nathan departed unto his house and the lord struck the child that uriah's wife bare unto. David and it was very sick David therefore besought god for the child and david fasted and went in and lay all night upon the earth And the elders of his house arose and went to him and to raise him up from the earth But he would not neither did he eat bread with them And it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died And the servants of david feared to tell him that the child was dead for they said behold while the child was yet alive We spake unto him and he would not hearken unto our voice How will he then vex himself if we tell him that the child is dead? But when david saw that his servants whispered david perceived that the child was dead Therefore david said unto his servants is the child dead and they said he is dead Then david arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his apparel and came into the house of the lord and worshipped Then he came to his own house and when he when he required they said bread before him and he did eat Then said his servants unto him. What thing is this that thou has done? Thou didst fast and weep for the child while it was alive But when the child was dead thou didst rise and eat bread And he said while the child was yet alive I fasted and wept for I said Who can tell whether god will be gracious to me that the child may live? But now he is dead. Wherefore should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me And david comforted basheba his wife and went in unto her and lay with her and she bare a son And he called his name solomon and the lord loved him And he sent by the hand of nathan the prophet and he his and he called his name jedediah because of the lord And joab fought against rabah of the children of ammon and took the royal city and joab sent messages to david and said I Fought against rabah and i've taken the city of waters now Therefore gather the rest of the people together and a camp against the city and take it Let's I take the city and be called and it be called after my name And david gathered all the people together and went to rabah and fought against it and took it And he took their king's crown from off his head and wait the weight thereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones And it was set on david's head And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance And he brought forth the people that were therein and put them under saws and under harrows of iron and under axes of iron And made them pass through the brick kiln and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of ammon So david and all the people returned into jerusalem Let's pray dear lord thank god thank you for this church that you've given us lord and thank you for the bible and We thank you for pastor lord. We pray that you bless him right now and uh, Give a boldness of speech and uh clarity of voice lord and that uh, uh The us and the congregation are attentive to the preaching tonight lord and that we come away edified lord And so we just pray that you bless this time. We pray this in jesus name. Amen Amen Okay tonight we continue in our bible study of the second samuel and we are chapter 12 this evening Let me give you just a bit of review from last week just to kind of get us caught up to speed here last week We're in chapter 11 and we highlighted david's sin and it's probably the most Uh, one of the most popular stories in a sense in the old testament. It's something that's very well known of david You know just as much as we know that he was a man after god's own heart that he's the sweet psalmist of israel Unfortunately, we know about his sin too the fact that he committed adultery and he murdered a man in order to cover up for it And so last week we saw the provision that he made for his sin He essentially stayed behind in jerusalem at a time when kings go forth to battle We basically learned that a lot of times the reason why people commit the sin of commission Is because they're committing the sin of omission first They're omitting some spiritual discipline in their life something that they know they're supposed to do But they don't do it which eventually leads them into some type of temptation Which eventually leads them into committing some sort of sin The bible tells us he that knoweth to do good and doeth it not to him it is sin and so we saw the provision That he made for his sin Then we saw the progression because after he committed adultery now he has to cover up for that And so he essentially has your iya murdered or he tries to actually first bring your right down So that your eye can stay with his wife and then you know No one would be the wiser if he came together with his wife and she bore a child Everyone would think that it was your eyes baby, but it was actually David's baby, but then we see the plot against oraya where basically everything else fails. Uriah is a man of integrity He doesn't go home. He stays there at the king's house He wants to be out there fighting the lord's battles. And so david has him killed by the hand of ammon And so very grievous sins that we see david committing here And now we're going to look at the fourfold payment of david's sin here in chapter number 12 And this is basically where david is confronted over his sin by the prophet and he get things right, but obviously it comes with consequences And look at verse number one here. We're going to look at the parable of the stolen lamb And the first thing we're going to see is that the lord sends the prophet says in verse number one And the lord sent nathan unto david now keep in mind The previous chapter said that that which david did Displeased the lord and so when it displeased the lord, what did the lord do he sent the prophet? Unto david now, why is he sending him to essentially proclaim the sin that david has committed? Okay And the lesson we learn here is the fact that you know often god tries to get your attention obviously through your bible reading Obviously he tries to get your attention through bad experiences in life Through the consequences of your actions but more often than not if you are a church-going christian He's going to get your attention through the preacher He's going to get your attention to the preaching of god's word. Okay now You know this prophet obviously has divine revelation right in other words god uh essentially told nathan what david was guilty of And you know nathan came and preached them to him and called him out for it And so obviously god endowed nathan with the supernatural ability to know what david did now, that's not the case today Okay We don't have those types of prophets today Where god is speaking to them directly through a cloud through a still small voice, you know an audible voice And you know, he reveals all these things about people's sins that doesn't take place But you know what does happen is that the pastor just simply preaches the bible And because the word of god pertains everything to life and godliness Eventually that preacher that pastor is going to hit on your sin now the reason that's important is because Virtually throughout the year. I always get people thinking that I have like a sleeper cell in church Just like spying on people so I can come up with sermon content You know i'll often preach on a particular sin and then people are like you told them about what I did, huh? Or how did pastor find out about this? Oh, you probably have someone in the group chat, you know Listening and reading all of the messages that people are saying and then they're reporting back to you letting you know. I don't okay You know, I just preach on the bible and I make daily application to it Application to you know our day and age and because we're all sinners because we you know, there's nothing new under the sun Eventually it's going to hit you. Okay. It doesn't mean I have you least a spine on people in here You're like, you know go releases. I need some new material this week, you know Get on that chat. Give me something to work with here who's involved in sin right now You know who's playing video games now. I found that out last week who plays video games So I will admit that that's probably one of the only times but see in that conversation I find that you know, the people who are guilty of playing video games just came and told me okay, you know, they just said hey It is I you know what I mean? This is like I didn't even have to say thou art the man. They're like I am the man But really it's just like I am the boy. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. I am the child. Okay But you know, obviously that's the exception to the rule. Okay, when a group of people just tell me about something specific But you know sometimes i'll preach on something and then the the husband gets on the wife or something Or vice versa and they're like you told them about us fighting, huh? And just like uh, no, I didn't say any you know, no one told me anything It's just that I just know that you know couples fight Okay, and I just so happen to know that there's conflict in marriages at all times not at all times hopefully not all the time But you know throughout your marriage is going to be conflict There's going to be some bumping of the heads and so when I preach on it if you are guilty of that Obviously it's going to hit you right and so don't blame me don't think I have you know I have your house wired or something like that and people are just ratting on you. It's just that your sin nature Our sin nature goes against the bible. And so when I preach the bible, it's going to hit you one way or another Okay, and so just just for future reference for 2023. Okay, you know when I start preaching on something It's just like oh man, you know, how did you know that? You know who told you about that? It's like no one did. Okay. It's like when j frank norris in the in the 1920s He had found out about you know, some a banker who was involved in adultery And you know, he was no stranger to just you know, kind of publicizing that stuff and he even had a billboard He made a billboard that said like come hear me preach tonight because i'm going to tell you about This particular banker that's involved in adultery. Okay And you know, obviously the attendance was going to be really high that night You know what I mean because god's people they love that kind of stuff, you know So right before the service he's out there fellowshiping with the people and he had five bankers come up to him and say Please don't tell him it was me, you know It was like he only knew of one But like another five came up to him to kind of reveal that why because nothing there's nothing new under the sun my friends And so, you know, the prophet is often sent unto you To confront you about your sin whether I know about it or not Okay, and so don't get mad at the messenger don't get mad at the prophet Don't get mad at the pastor, you know, you should get mad at your own sin or you know Get mad at god for putting it in the word of god, okay But you know, that's what preaching is supposed to do though The bible says preach the word be instant in season out of season Reprove rebuke and exhort with all long suffering and doctrine if I get on your favorite musician If I get on your favorite actor, you know, if I get on andrew tate or whatever, you know Don't get mad at me. I'm just making daily application modern day application to what the bible says And it's timeless and you know, god wants us to take his word and apply it to what's going on today in 2022. Okay And so, uh, he sends nathan unto david and it says and he came unto him and said unto him There were two men in one city the one rich and the other poor So he's about to give him the allegory basically highlighting david's sin It says the rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing save one little you lamb He was referring to a female lamb there Which he had bought and nourished up and it grew up It grew up together with him and with his children it did eat of his own meat and drank of his own cup And lay in his bosom and was unto him as a daughter So let me just say this. Okay, but this has nothing to do with the sermon But here's your justification for having pets I guess okay, you know those of you who like treat your your little chihuahua like royalty, okay, and you know You let them eat out of your own dish and you put shoes on it. I saw a dog the other day with like a christmas sweater on You know, how many have you seen that And it is I had like a sweater. It's like dogs have fur Like they have built-in sweaters Why do they need that for and then the nose like uh little booties or whatever you put on the on the pole? It's like their paws. That's that's what they're there for. You know, that's how god made them They don't need those shoes or whatever some people treat their dogs better than they treat other human beings sometimes Okay And so but you know, i'll be compassionate about it and say here's your justification If you're like, well, you know pets are biblical. Okay. Yeah, this guy had a ulam here, but the ulam died. Okay So, you know, he's the ulam is you know is with the children It's eating of their of the meat and drinking of the the cup laying in the bosom And you know is unto him as a daughter, okay? Because you have people sometimes they're like these are like my kids, you know, it's just like all right like as a daughter I'm, i'm not i'm sure no one the person who owned it by the way. This is just a parable by the way, okay It didn't really happen, right? So don't go too far on it. You know, i'm sure this person was just wasn't like hey This is my daughter or something It's just saying how close they were to this particular animal because there's a it was their only you lamb Okay, if they would have had as many as the rich man had they probably wouldn't have treated it the same way It would have been like whatever other lamb because they had one they valued it Okay, and there came a traveler verse four unto the rich man and he spared to take of his own flock Of his own herd to dress for the wayfaring man That was come unto him but took the poor man's lamb And dressed it for the man that was come to him now dress doesn't mean that he put a christmas sweater on him and booties Dress means he killed it and then they served it. Okay So instead of taking of his entire flock that he had many of he took the man's one little you lamb Killed it and gave it unto the man obviously something's very unjust And we would even say that there's probably theft involved right? He stole this you lamb To give to this wayfaring man someone who's traveling on foot essentially Okay, verse five look what it says in verse five and david's anger was greatly kindled Against the man kindled means like he's just inflamed. Okay, you think of kindling a fire He's basically saying his wrath is just he became very angry very wrathful Very upset at the and it's just a story, okay But he's greatly kindled and he sent it to nathan as the lord liveth The man that has done this thing shall surely die Okay, there's your first uh, you know, uh, pita person or something. You know what I mean? Like And he shall restore the lamb fourfold because he did this thing And because he had no pity so let me spend some time talking about what david's doing here So we see the lord sends the prophet we see the allegory of david's sin But then david just overreacts Right, and he says oh the guy who did that that he's basically saying this person's wicked and they deserve the death penalty Okay capital punishment for stealing a lamb And serving it as food to a wayfaring man. Okay. Now the old testament laws you know it does have you know some uh As far as principles of restitution when someone steals for example a lamp and the rest of the the the principle there The law says that basically if someone steals one lamb you should restore fourfold. Okay But it doesn't say that they should die Okay, you say why is david? You know requiring the death penalty on this imaginary character that doesn't even exist. It's a parable. Why is that? I'll tell you why it's because he's overcompensating To cover up for his own sin, okay So we see david's david overcompensates here in these couple of verses now. What does it mean to overcompensate? Well to overcompensate means to take excessive measures In attempts to cover up for a particular flaw or sin or whatever it may be. Okay Now there's a couple reasons why people overcompensate. Okay, because this is a common thing The first one would be, you know, sometimes people overcompensate they kind of take excessive measures to cover up for themselves Because of the fact that they have past failures, okay So if someone has a past failure in a particular sin, they will often be really hard on that particular sin on others Okay, because of their past failure or they want to deflect any attention From the possibility that anybody might suspect that they're involved in that sin so they will overcompensate So they will overcompensate in order to deter the tension that they were guilty of that sin that they are condemning themselves Okay. Now here's the thing is that you know, the bible says That we can judge another person Even if a sin that we have committed if as long as we're not committing that sin anymore, you understand And so, you know, obviously we're all sinners and we've all made mistakes But what the bible condemns doing is, you know trying to pull out the moat out of someone's eye While you still have a beam in yours, okay, which here's a perfect example He's trying to cast out the moat of theft while he has the beam of adultery and murder in his eye. You understand? But you know, sometimes people do this because of past failures. They're not necessarily wicked people They're essentially insecure about the fact that they're guilty of whatever sin and therefore They're really hard on other people when it comes to that particular sin, okay Another reason would be they have an inferiority complex So they're kind of insecure. So what they'll do is they'll overcompensate And try to be extra hyper spiritual because they are lacking spiritually Okay, you know, they're really hard on people if they don't read their bibles or or you know Go soul winning or maybe because they're not necessarily involved in that you understand so in order to deter attention from Their lack of spiritual discipline they'll impose that on other people by condemning others And overcompensating and say man, I go so many like 10 hours a day or I read like 30 chapters a day What are they doing? They're overcompensating Okay. Now if you read 30 chapters a day great, but I guarantee you whoever reads 30 chapters a day of the bible They're not telling people they read 30 chapters of the bible Because they if you're reading 30 chapters of the bible every single day You probably have enough spiritual maturity to know or you probably read enough To know, you know, I probably shouldn't brag about this I probably should be humble about the fact that I read 30 chapters, but the person who's just constantly bragging about their Spiritual accomplishments, you know, oh I wake up at four o'clock in the morning to pray for two hours That's a person who overcompensates And this is a huge deal especially with um, You know new christians sometimes okay new christians or bible college students I only know that because of experience, you know, i've met a lot of bible college students who are just like that where you know They just feel spiritually inferior So they impose these crazy standards of spiritual discipline in order to deter attention from you know I know there's one guy back in bible college where he would He would read like in the mornings i'd be in my office And he would be in the auditorium my office kind of shared a wall with the auditorium So you can kind of hear what's going on in there and he'd be in there praying out loud You know what I mean knowing full well that the staff can hear him kind of thing You know, it's just this hyper spirituality but you know It's it's or people would just be you know Okay, let me give an example, you know, sometimes people are just reading their bible in public. They're just like You know, obviously that's not nothing wrong with that per se, right? But here's the thing is that more often than not if someone's constantly doing that It probably shows that they don't read the bible on their own Because they're trying to you know Make everyone see how much they read the bible just in person, you understand and here's a great example of that garrett kirschway Who is a wicked person? He's a false prophet and he got found out years ago If you don't know who he is don't it don't matter it's just this failed evangelist who's who's a one is heretic When he would come preach for us prior to us knowing that he was a false prophet, you know, he wouldn't fellowship with anybody You know what he would do is just sit there in front of everyone just read the bible So it makes you think like oh man, and then you you feel kind of like Hey, maybe I should be doing that, you know, like I don't read the bible enough or whatever But the guy, you know Obviously the guy's not even saved because he denies that jesus christ is the eternal son of god He must have skipped that in his bible reading now, huh? You see what i'm saying? So they overcompensate by doing these hyper spiritual actions And because they have an inferiority complex, so they'll do it because of past failures inferiority complex Or they're just trying to deflect any type of suspicion from them Okay, not necessarily because they're wicked but maybe because they feel guilty about a particular Habit Sin, and so they're really hard on that. Okay Now that's very common with new christians Okay, often they're the loudest ameners When i'm ripping on something really hard, they're the you know, when i'm telling the women to submit they're just like amen That's right Ephesians five they're just going off, you know But they don't have their life in order you understand Yeah And so, you know, they're trying to deflect the tension from their lack of spirituality or the fact that they are spiritually immature still now Don't get me wrong. Don't don't stop saying amen in the service. Okay, now everyone's gonna be afraid to say. Amen They're like should I do this or not? You know, he's gonna think i'm overcompensated But if I don't he's gonna think i'm you know, just say amen if you agree, you understand, but i'm just saying You know, sometimes it's a little over the top Okay And when people are a little over the top they're a little excessive in their spirituality That's like a red flag. Someone's overcompensated because of a particular, you know failure in their life or you know They're trying to deflect some sort of suspicion from them. You understand just be normal You know You don't have to be hyper spiritual look folks, you know when we were with our family we let our hair down, right? And they know our mistakes. They know who we are Well, i'm not saying let your hair all the way down in church But let me just say this that everyone knows you here I mean obviously our church is growing to the point where some people don't know each other but for the most part People know who you are. You don't have to put up a front Okay, you don't have to act spiritual just You know be you Grow in grace grow at your pace at your own pace and and just be normal and you know Just don't do that stuff. Okay Because Overcompensating is just annoying And and i've been a christian long enough where I can sniff it out right away Okay, when someone begins to overcompensate and they start imposing standards on people And they start bragging about how much they do this how much they do this like this person's overcompensating I don't know for what I don't know if it's a past failure I don't know if it's a you know, they have an inferiority complex I don't know if they're trying to deter suspicion, but one thing's for sure. They're definitely overcompensating. They're being excessive In this particular discipline this particular thing or whatever, okay You know, i'll give you an example You know When we would do the bar so sowing Prior to us taking a breakthrough at this time that the guy we threw out recently You know, he went on that trip And this guy, you know, we we julius was there and and you know, he was there and a couple other people were there And you know we get there and I tell you lisa. I was like i'm gonna go with you Okay And this person just he made a really smart just remark about it He was like, oh this means that you guys are trying to have fun That's what that means That that's code for I want to have fun right and I was like, okay Change of plans i'm going with you And i'm going to check out your soul winning mail and i'm going to scrutinize your soul winning, you know now here's the thing is that Of course I want to have fun when I go soul winning It's such a stupid thing to say it's fun to go soul winning You say why well number one You know you get people saved which is great Number two You know, you got your soul winning part in there that you're cracking jokes with in between doors You're laughing a little right? Number three, you get a couple doors slammed on your face and you joke about it later You just there's a lot of experiences that you get when you're out there solving no one goes so it's just like discipline just You know, it's just like Oh, you just want to have fun Oh, i'm, sorry. I didn't know having fun was a sin You know what I mean? And you know, I don't know why I chose ulysses that day, but you know what? Maybe he was right Maybe I was trying to have fun with ulysses because ulysses is fun to go so winning with Because he's just a normal person. He's not someone who's trying to constantly trying to overcompensate And you know what? I went with this guy And he was definitely overcompensated the entire time. I was with him You know, it's just like he just can't go soul winning in a normal fashion For example, I knocked on the door And when I you know when I go soul winning like I don't like to be robotic about it I just like to talk to people heart to heart Soul to soul right and sometimes I do get a little comfortable like I was talking to this person and I just kind of leaned On like the wall and I just you know, just talking to the person I didn't really notice that I did it and then he told me afterwards. He's like Now, let me ask you this question you lean on the wall Is there a particular reason why you is there a specific method to that is there Like dude i'm just No, no there wasn't and he's just like he's like did you do that on purpose? Is that some sort of body language that causes them to it's just like? It means i'm tired, bro I mean, it just means there was a wall there and I just lean on it. You know what I mean? Like what do you want me to say is there's no You know Method to the madness or whatever Okay But this is the kind of nonsense that i'm talking about Where it's just like this this overly hyper spiritual type of attitude And you know after we're everything all was said and done You know, we're finished and you know when we're done souling, you know what we want to do. We want to go eat So it's like everyone get in the car. We're going to go to in and out And he's just like wait How long were we out here for how many souls were saved? What was the rest? You know the receptiveness of this particular i'm like, why do you want to know? He goes, oh I take stats on all the sony areas that we go to whatever I'm, like stats and he's just like yeah, i'm like i've been sowing for 15 years. I've never done what you're talking about About one particular area to that extent He's a why I need you because i'm gonna tell some guys back at the church and we all determine You know where we're gonna go based upon i'm like you can't do that with one area Because and I told him I was like look look you see that street right there. That's super unreceptive This is receptive that's not and so you can't say on a scale from one to ten How receptive is this entire area because that street is different from this area? I'm, like just go soul winning and enjoy it win souls to christ and encourage people to go anyways So what are you gonna say if it wasn't that receptive don't go It's not that receptive or whatever. Don't even waste your time It's nonsense folks But I guarantee you this person had a lot of personal failures Okay, so he's constantly overcompensating Condemning others just has this hyper spirituality about himself Trying to overcompensate because of you know, he's deflecting suspicion from himself Okay, and that's one of the reasons probably why he got thrown out. Okay, and so just be normal. Okay Let's just be independent fundamental baptist folks All right independent fundamental baptists. We all know, you know, we we we all got mistakes for sinners Just be normal don't be like david and david is just really excessive about he's like this person should die You know and it's just it's it's it's too much. It's over the top. Okay So just know this, you know when someone's over the top with you just know this is like that's a red flag You know when I got single guys coming up to me telling me how long do you think children should watch television for Like why do you care? You don't even have children You don't even have a wife I'll tell you how much none you None your business It's like but you know, and i'm not saying that's not an important issue obviously that is But when you have someone who has no wife No children trying to just pinpoint how long they you know, it's just like what are you trying to deflect here? What kind of suspicion are you are you guilty of something else and i've had conversations with people like that And it turns out that those people were involved in some pretty grievous sins You know what I mean? And so You know david's anger was greatly kindled He is You know putting the death penalty on this guy for stealing a lamb Now obviously he knew enough of the bible that he said The lamb should be restored fourfold, right which is biblical you see that in Exodus 22 verse 1 But he kind of caked it on and said that person should die too Which is nonsense, okay? He says in verse number Seven or verse six says and he shall restore the land fourfold because he did this thing and because he had no pity by the way He's also what's the word i'm looking for here? He's projecting Right, isn't he projecting Because he stole beth's sheba And had no pity On uriah I mean he sent them to die in a grievous manner at the hands of god's enemies So he's simply projecting who he is verse seven So now the punted we're going to see the punishment for david's sin We saw the parable of the stolen lamb now We're going to look at the punishment for his sin says in verse seven and nathan said to david Here's some the coldest words right here in this chapter thou art the man And he's not saying it a good way either He's not like you the man He's like you're the guy i'm talking about He set himself up Thus saith the lord god of israel i'm known to thee king over israel and I delivered thee out of the hand of saw I'm kind of wondering if nathan was just like oh i'm about to get you right now like you didn't even know You know, he's just like you fell right into it Verse eight says and I gave thee thy master's house and thy master's wives into thy bosom And gave thee the house of israel and of judah and if that had been too little I would have moreover have given Unto the such and such thing. So what is he doing? He's highlighting david's discontentment Okay Because david was essentially behaving lustful. What is lust is when you another word for lust in the bible is what to covet? Covetousness and covetousness is a discontentment With the things that you have at the moment, right? And god's message to him was like I gave you so much I let you be the king not only over israel, but over judah I I blessed your house. I gave you your your wives I allowed you to do such and such things and he says if that had been too little if that wasn't enough for you He's saying I would have given you more I mean what a sad statement that was, right? Just to say like if you know You're not happy with what i'm giving you and you know at the end of the day any sin could be related to covetousness Us desiring things that we should not have or that we should not have at the moment And being discontent with what god has given to us at the moment Understand and you know, we as christians need to practice Contentment godliness with contentment. The bible says is great gain instead of looking for Gains in your possessions gains in your finances gains in vehicles or houses or that which is temporal Look for the eternal gain that you receive by coupling contentment with Godliness Right because contentment, you know, the world has there's people in the world who have contentment But they don't have godliness You know, they have contentment they can practice contentment. They can learn contentment. However Contentment with godliness is great game because godliness teaches us That you know, we're we're going without right now because either we're going to get it in the future Or it's just something that we should never have And we should be happy with what god has provided now, okay? And so he's highlighting his discontentment saying all these things that he could have had and even more so verse 9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the lord to do evil in his sight? That was killed. Uriah the Hittite with the sword and has taken his wife to be thy wife And has slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. So he used his enemy to kill his friend Use Ammon to slay Uriah which is one of David's mighty men Verse 10 now therefore the sword listen to this the punishment that we see here the consequences of his sin Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house Because that was despised me and has taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife Thus saith the lord behold I will raise up evil against out of thine own house I will take thy wives before thine eyes and give them unto thy neighbor And he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this son So a couple things that I want to mention here regarding the consequences of David's sin is that uh, he actually does do this, right? Because Absalom when he defects from his father You know in second Samuel chapter 16 We actually see him going to the you know, uh, Hitler fell, you know by his counsel goes to the roof and and spreads a tent And he essentially goes into his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel, okay Not only very shameful because those are his father's concubines, but also because it was his son who did it Now here's what's interesting. Okay, because the parable was about a man Taking a you lamb right one lamb and according to the law He's supposed to be the person is supposed to be restored fourfold Now Bathsheba is not a lamb obviously as a person and obviously David has spared the death penalty by God However, he still has to restore fourfold You say how does he restore fourfold? Well? his child dies One okay, then you have Amnon dies Then you have Absalom who dies and then you have Adonijah dying Four sons restoring fourfold what David did to Uriah I mean isn't that interesting so the laws of the Lord were still in effect Spiritually speaking is just like David's going to restore this fourfold and it's going to be four of your children to perish and die Understand a little poetic justice there uh, you know that we see from the parable that's being put forth and so By the way, a lesson we learned there is that you know when we sin folks and we remain an unrepentant sin When we do something grievous You're never just going to pay once it's always double triple quadruple the consequence Of your action, you know one thing that keeps us in line and right with God Number one obviously is is the fact that we know we will be blessed if we stay out of sin, right? You know if we live a life that's pleasing unto the Lord God will bless us for it But you know on the flip side of that what another thing that keeps us right with God is knowing that there's some grievous consequences to our sin It's not just like oh, you know God will make me pay just one fold or whatever twofold. No, sometimes it's fourfold. Sometimes it's even more than that You know sin will cost you more than you want to pay God will get you get your attention one way or another and you know, David paid I mean grievously for this And he was definitely grieved and saddened and distraught at the death of all his children I mean his children died, you know, and then, you know, we see that solomon comes Uh into the story he's born and then of course that is the person who ends up building the temple He's the one he's the descendant of jesus christ, etc. However You know, what about his other sons, you know, and so we see here that he's he's paying a grievous uh consequence for his actions and um And he's being shamed before all of israel as well later on in second sandwich chapter 16 So we see this punishment here And you know what? We we as god's people especially young people, you know Sometimes young people don't take into account the the repercussions of your actions Okay, you don't understand you think well, you know, what's a little of this going to do? What is a little of that going to do? Well, you know, there's something called the aggregation of marginal gains Okay, and what the aggregation of marginal gains is if you improve one percent each day eventually that'll be like 50 You know, it kind of adds up right if you improve in your air in your life by one percent each day One percent may not be like may not seem like it's a lot But as it accumulates over six months to a year, you'll see that it makes a huge difference Okay However on the flip side of that If you're involved in sin one percent each day If you rely yourself to stray away from the word of god get involved in sin a little just a little bit Well, you know what? There's some there's some aggregation of those gains as well losses. Should we call it? Okay, and you'll see that at the end of your life you would have destroyed your life just one percent of the time One percent of the time, okay And so that's the lesson there look at verse number 13 it says and david sent it to nathan. I have sinned against the lord Now what's what's great about that phrase there? No excuses? Aren't you tired of people just making excuses all the time? You know, oh it's so-and-so's fault. Oh, you know, it's because you know, it's best shiba's fault What is she doing bathing naked on the rooftop? Rooftop Oh, it's because you you made me this way. Oh, it's because you know all these wars i'm just so stressed He he didn't come up with any excuse He just said i've sinned He didn't try to defend himself He didn't try to make up excuses He didn't you know try to defend he didn't do any of that. He just said I have sinned and you know what when we do wrong That's what we got to tell the lord Because here's the thing there's no use in you defending yourself before the lord Because we're all guilty before the lord. Amen You know, we just need to come into agreement with god that we've sinned and say, you know, i've sinned i've done wrong I've done wickedly i've done wrong. I've sinned against you. I have sinned and it goes on to say and nathan said unto. David the lord Also hath put away thy sin Thou shalt not die. So immediately he gets forgiveness Immediately You know the bible says in first john 1 9 if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness now What's something that we can learn from this? Well, it teaches us that you know repentance doesn't always equal a change of action Because it's not like david's changing any actions here Right. I mean everything's kind of said and done, right? Here he's just repenting. He's just telling the lord, you know, i've sinned He's he's wrong and you know what he's immediately forgiven of that sin The reason I say this because you know a lot of the repenting your sins crowd Expect some sort of physical change, which obviously there's some instances where yeah, that's necessary, but not always You know some sort of change but you know, sometimes it's just a confession and that's it You know a lot of people are against the sinner's prayer Or they're just like oh admitting you're a sinner is just not enough you have to change your life Uh, no admitting you're a sinner is is definitely enough Because it's coming into agreement with god. I can't save myself because I am a sinner who deserves help. Okay? And so the death penalty is not instituted upon david because of his sin though. He deserved it God extended his mercy to him his graciousness to him and he allowed him to live In spite of the fact that his sin was definitely grievous and and merited the death penalty verse 14 Howbeit because by this deed that was given great occasion to the enemies of the lord to blaspheme The child also that is born into these shall surely die now. We don't know exactly what this what this means, uh, exactly You know as far as the enemies of the lord to blaspheme I would conjecture that this means that the enemies of the lord found out about this whole thing Somehow they found out, okay They didn't have instagram and facebook, but you know what, you know, people were were were gossipers back then too, you know what I mean? Loud mouths back then gossipers back then, you know, just kind of telling everyone what happened I'm sure that people existed back then too and word got around and they found out that david committed this grievous sin, okay and so This is another reason why we need to make sure That we live a life that's pleasing unto the lord Why because we don't want to give great occasion to the enemies of lord to blaspheme christianity blaspheme the lord because of our sin Okay, and you know what i'm so sick and tired of seeing you know, uh Obviously, you know you have infiltrators going into churches And but one thing I see a lot on social media is people exposing independent fundamental baptists Because of some wicked reprobate pedophile or whatever, right? And we know that that person's not safe that person's a devil He deserves to get exposed They're wicked reprobates, you know, they should especially if they're involved in pedophilia And all that nonsense they should essentially just end their lives and shoot themselves in the head Right for for touching children and using church As a means to try to try to accomplish that But you know those people deserve the death penalty, but you know, what really makes me mad is the people who defend those people Is the pastors and the churches? That will defend those people and they will condemn pastors like us churches like ours By saying oh by you You know condemning this person you're allowed you're giving great occasion to the enemies of the lord to blaspheme. It's like no you are Because you put this filthy pedophile in the children's ministry And then after he commits his wicked sin you're like defending him It's nonsense folks You know, I don't know what's up with these old ifb pastors out there and not all of them are like this Okay, I know some pretty righteous just old ifb pastors that will not let that go But you know what a lot of them do let it go You know recently jack scott was released from prison You know, jack scott the false prophet from first baptist church of hammond who committed that wicked sin He's a he's a reprobate the guy Took some girl across state lines to commit just just wicked acts with her and he was put in prison for that Unfortunately, they didn't get him in prison, you know, they need to put him in a prison out here in california You know and the california prisoners out here will take care of that issue really quick. Okay, because california prisons just are a little different But this guy's released And I guarantee you there's going to be some idiot independent fundamental baptist out there who's going to invite them to preach They're going to invite them to to be a part of you know on staff with them or something like that And and help try to help restore him or something. There's no reforming a pedophile folks You know they deserve the death penalty in the worst possible way The worst modern way to execute a person that's exactly what the pedophile deserves the most grievous torturous Death is is that's what they merit He said well, that's not biblical. Are you kidding me? Jesus said to tie a a millstone around their neck and cast them into the depths of the sea. This is prior to mafias He said that before italian mafias and all that That's probably where they got it from Look, I told you it's pretty good idea. No, you know I mean jesus is the one who came up with that He could easily look and look do we see the millstone being tied about the neck and cast into the sea in the old testament? No The death penalty was instituted by stoning them Jesus is like i'm gonna one up that We'll tie a huge stone around his neck and cast them into the depths of the sea. That's a slow and painful death because even if that person holds their breath their their Heads gonna explode from the pressure going into you know, that deep of the ocean or whatever. It's a it's excruciating pain You know, that's what jack scott deserves And it's unfortunate that there's probably pastors out there who are still praising this guy thinking he's just The business and oh we got to restore this guy those people are causing the the enemies of the lord or the unsaved world to blaspheme the name of the lord because unfortunately, you know Unsafe people have a tendency to have a little more common sense than some christians do You can quote me on that because it's true sometimes Sometimes there's unsafe people who do not have the spirit of god They don't have the word of god, but they have something called common sense You know and and they're just kind of like why would you allow that and then christians are just like who we just gonna love everyone Including this person who committed all these wicked acts It's it's it's stupidity and those people are giving great occasion to the enemies of lord to blaspheme That's why a lot of people think christianity is a joke Because of people like that, you know And anytime someone brings that to my attention i'm like Put that person in prison that person should die in prison That person deserves the worst possible punishment that a person can institute on another individual in this lifetime And don't lump that person in with us You know because we don't support that we don't sweep things under the carpet at our church You know some pedophiles found in our church He's lucky if he even gets out the out the doors Just put it that way And so, you know Obviously what david did was not that bad But it's still grievous nonetheless, and he's a king He's a person who's in a position of of authority And so, you know, this is israel this is God's nation in the old testament and so a lot of you know, maybe amin is hearing about this A lot of the the surrounding enemies are hearing about this and they're blaspheming the lord because of it very sad verse 15 They're giving christianity a black eye And nathan departed unto his house and the lord struck the child of uriah's wife barren to david and it was very sick So now we're going to see the passing away of the infant David therefore besought god for the child and david fasted and went in and lay all night upon the earth And the elders of his house arose and went to him and raised him up from the earth, but he would not Neither did he eat bread with them and it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died And the servant of david feared to tell the uh that the child was dead for they said behold while the child was yet alive We spake unto him and he would not hearken into our voice How will he then vex himself if we tell him that the child is dead now listen to this in verse 19 But when david saw that his servants whispered they would proceed that the child was dead Therefore david said unto his servants is the child dead and they said he is dead then david arose from the earth Washed and anointed himself changed his apparel came into the house of the lord and worshipped Then he came to his own house and when they required they set bread before him and he did eat now, let me explain this Okay Because I remember reading this as a new christian thinking man David's kind of like that was fast You know, he's like weeping he's crying over the child who's sick who could potentially die and then he dies and he's just like You know, he's just like anoints his head goes in and eats bread and you you could read that and say, you know Kind of cold there. David, you know, doesn't it bother you that your child's You would think that after a child has died. He would grieve even more, right? He'd be weeping more Be even more distressed because now the baby's not there and here's my explanation for this. Okay, this is what I believe About this passage as to why he did that or why he didn't grieve thereafter and let me just say this is that A lot of you will probably not understand what i'm about to tell you Because it hasn't happened to you yet There is a pain in this life where you just cry to the point where you could actually no longer cry Like you you literally tap out on tears Okay And you're like, I don't get that. Yeah, because maybe you haven't experienced that type of pain yet But there is a type of pain in life where it's just like a constant bombardment of trials and difficulties And and sorrow where you're just crying and crying and crying and crying you're grieved and grieved and grieved And then it's like literally you just can't even cry anymore Okay, i'm not going to ask for a raise of hands to to you know If you've experienced that but i'm sure a lot of people in here have experienced that And i'm sure a lot of you are the ones who have experienced There are not young people because often this comes with just the trials of life and the difficulties of life And you know just just hardships but there can come a point where it's just like I'm grieved and i'm sad but I can't even shed a tear right now not because like they're cold-hearted Or they're hardened to the trial It's just that there's only so much tears. You could cry There's only so much you can grieve and cry over and i'm sure david got he's gotten to that point I mean I'm sure he cried a lot. I mean the bible the book of psalms talks about that. He's making his bed to swim, you know he's he's essentially Tearing so much that his bed is just filled with tears And it's probably got to a point where he's just like I can't even cry anymore even if I wanted to And you may think to yourself that doesn't make any sense I can cry really good like I cry every night to sleep What are you talking about? You know, that's that's that's easy for me But you know what that there's there's there's pains in this life Where you can actually tap out on tears It's just like well, I can't do anything else. And in fact, you know, there's times when people Grieve and they cry to the point where they can't cry no more and they actually begin to laugh You're like I don't understand how is that because it's just like there's nothing what's the next emotion i'm tapped out on tears I think i'm just going to start laughing at myself over this trial And a lot of people don't understand that they think like that's weird. That's like a psychological thing, but I just think it's just life You know what I mean? It's like you're tapped out of tears. All right, what else I got? I got I got laughter And I have you know, whatever other emotion i'll go with laughter or whatever And you just start laughing at you know The trials of life believe it or not. Now for a lot of you're like this makes no sense to me That sounds crazy But come back to me in 10 years Come back to me in 20 years Remember this because you'll come up to me like i'm tapped out of tears Because of this particular trial that i've gone through Everyone to a certain extent has gone through it. Okay Okay But I think that the the more trials and difficulties to come our way the more it happens and you know, you just can't cry anymore and then too, you know, it's just like David loves his child that passed away, you know, david still has a job to do He's like the king You know, there's a lot of administration. There's a kingdom to rule And so, you know, he has to kind of like move on and and do what he has to do even with a broken heart Okay, the the point is is just like, you know, when we go through trials and difficulties Let us weep. Let us grieve Let us be sorrowful, but don't become um Don't let it what's the word i'm looking for, uh, like paralyze you That's not the right word. I'm looking for a different word Incapacitate you that's not the word either, but thank you No, don't let it you know, uh Uh Yeah, we'll go with cripple that's good Debilitate who said that brother moran. Thank you thesaurus Don't let it debilitate you To the point where you're just like you just can't get out of bed. You just can't function You know at that point you need some help. Okay, you need to get some help You know, we all suffer and grieve there's seasons of life like that But don't let it debilitate you or to the point where you just can't function Normally from day to day you understand it's like you gotta wipe away your tears eat some bread and go to work You gotta wipe away your tears eat some bread and teach to kill it teach the kids You know, you wipe away your tears eat some bread and go read your bible like life still goes on. Okay And so we see david here. He recovered quickly because of that now look at verse number. Um Let's see here verse 20 or verse 21 Then said his servants unto him what thing is this that thou has done thou didst fast and weep for the child while it was Yet it was alive But when the child was dead thou didst rise and eat bread and he said while the child was yet alive I fasted and wept for I said who can tell whether god will be gracious to me that the child may live now David's a man of great faith my friends He's just like I don't know I you know, i'm fasting and pray because who knows if god will be gracious to me I mean, that's a that's an awesome attitude But now he is dead wherefore should I fast can I bring him back I shall go to him, but he shall not return him to me Very poetic and beautiful beautifully stated And he probably didn't know that we'd be using this As proof that babies go to heaven. Amen You know Very much different from what the catholic church teaches or calvinists teach You know catholic church is just like if you don't baptize the baby that's going to go to hell if it dies or whatever Right or calvinists teach that because not everyone is elected Well, if a baby dies and it's not elected, you know, then therefore it's going to go to hell that's false. That's stupid These are doctrines of devils. Okay The bible teaches us that if a baby if an infant dies, it's innocent It will go to heaven. Okay, and the reason for that is because of the fact that You know, it's spirit that dwells within that infant is still alive See we automatically think oh, you know original sin or whatever, you know, we just were born spiritually dead not true The bible says in romans chapter 7, you know, paul the apostle said this for I was alive once Then the law came So he's not saying like he's not like some zombie or something like that He's saying like when he says I was alive once he's referring to the fact that he was alive spiritually once But then when the the law, you know revived it slew him and he died. Okay. I'm not quoting it perfectly here But the law slew him And therefore he needed to get saved and that that's why the bible talks about being quickened in the spirit When we get saved the spirit of god coming and regenerates our our dead spirit And then we get saved. Okay, but you know if a child dies You know people they Debate whether it's like well, should you say a child is saved, you know? Uh, you know because they didn't really believe on jesus christ and that term is only used for who cares the baby's in heaven Okay Like why argue about that the baby's in heaven my friends now, obviously, you know We can say saved because of the fact that jesus blood atones for that child, too right and so I think it would be appropriate to say saved because the The blood of christ still atones for that child because he's the savior of all men, but especially of those that believe okay And so we see here that babies go to heaven when they die. They don't go to hell And uh, that's a good verse for you to use in case someone has that question many do Let's skip down here, uh for lack of time Um Actually, let me just read 24. Sorry It says and david comforted Bathsheba his wife and went in unto her and laid with her And she bare him a son and called his name solomon and the lord loved him And he sent by the hand of nathan the prophet and he called his name jedediah because of the lord And so we see here that you know, even though david made a grievous mistake all things work together for good to them that love god Because solomon is a byproduct of an adulterous relationship that david had essentially, right? Even though obviously he he was born or he was conceived within marriage You know his parents basically found each other through adultery Okay But even then all things work together for good Okay, and so a wonderful thing happened thereafter and i'm not going to finish the rest of the chapter But let me just say this is that later on uh, we see that You know, we see joab Being joab, of course And he has some indignant remarks that he makes about david He's like you better come take it now or i'm going to take it just being joab And then, you know david goes and he conquers Rayba And then he takes the the crown verse 30 He takes the the king's crown off his head and he puts it puts it on himself now. I think the reason that's That story is particularly there. It's because of the fact that it's showing us that Even if you mess up in life You can still earn rewards thereafter You know, you can still earn spiritual crowns Even if you've committed some grievous sin And you might have thought that you just screwed up your life or whatever. You just messed it up You know, there are still rewards to be had even thereafter because even after this entire ordeal He's still conquering for the lord. He's still being crowned. He's still going to be used of god greatly even thereafter So never allow your past failures of sin or whatever may be to hinder you from thinking Well, I can never do anything now because I just messed up my life. I committed this grievous sin You can still be crowned thereafter You can still earn rewards thereafter if you're still alive. You're still in church You're reading the bible you're winning souls to christ, you know, there's a lot of hope You understand and you know what even though this is a grievous sin that david committed He's still going to do a lot greater things even hereafter, right? And the reality is this is that even though we know about this particular sin We often sing the praises of david and his successes and his victories So it kind of shows you that you can still pick up the pieces And and and move on with your life and still do great things and please the lord and so we'll finish there Let's pray and we'll be dismissed father. We thank you for the story here lord repentance and restoration of david and lord if it wasn't for His repentance we wouldn't have psalm 51 and it's such a beautiful psalm written by him And um, and it's a it's a psalm that we all have read and maybe have felt, uh that same kindred emotion Um when we sin lord against you and I pray lord that you'd help us to take the heart the principles this evening And help us to be like david that when we commit a sin that we just get it right right away We confess it before you and just move on and deal with the consequences of our actions But even prior to that we recognize through david's story that there are severe consequences to our actions In fact, we can we can pay fourfold For the sins that we commit and so I pray that you'd help us lord To avoid that bless us as we go on our way and give us a great weekend to follow in. Jesus name. Amen So All right, we have one last song song number 424 Oh come all ye faithful Song 424 oh come all ye faithful Everyone all together nice and strong Oh come all ye faithful Joyful and triumphant Oh come ye oh come ye to bethlehem Come and behold him born the king of angels Oh, come let us adore Him.
