we shall meet on that beautiful shore in the sweet by and by we will meet on that beautiful shore in the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore in the sweet study through first Kings first Kings chapter number 11 when you get there starting at verse number one the Bible reads but King Solomon loved many strange women together with the daughter of Pharaoh women of the Moabites Ammonites Edomites Zidonians and Hittites of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel you shall not go into them neither shall they come in unto you for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods Solomon clave unto these in love and he had 700 wives princesses and 300 concubines and his wives turn away his heart for it came to pass when Solomon was old that his wives turn away his heart after other gods and his heart was not perfect with the Lord as God as was the heart of David his father for Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites and Solomon did evil on the side of the Lord and went not fully after the Lord as did David his father then did Solomon build in high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab in the hill that is before Jerusalem and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon and likewise did he for all his strange wives which burnt incense and sacrifice unto their gods and the Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart was turned away or was turned from the Lord God of Israel which had appeared unto him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing that he should not go after other gods but he kept not that which the Lord commanded wherefore the Lord said unto Solomon for as much as this is done of thee and thou has not kept my covenant and my statutes which I have commanded thee I will surely rend the kingdom from thee and will give it to thy servant notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father's sake but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant's sake and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen and the Lord stirred up an adversary unto Solomon hey dad the Edomite he was of the king's seed in Edom for it came to pass when David was in Edom and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain after he had smitten every male in Edom for six months did Joab remain there with all Israel until he had cut off every male in Edom that hey dad fled he and certain Edomites of his father's servants with him to go into Egypt hey dad being yet a little child and they arose out of Midian and came to Peran and they took men with them out of Peran and they came to Egypt and Pharaoh king of Egypt which gave him in house and appointed him victuals and gave him land and hey dad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife the sister of Tapanese the Queen and the sister of Tapanese bare him Genubeth his son whom Tapanese weaned in Pharaoh's house and Genubeth was in Pharaoh's household among the sons of Pharaoh and when he had heard in Egypt that David slept with his father's and that Joab this captain of the host was dead hey dad said to Pharaoh let me depart that I may go to mine own country then Pharaoh said unto him but what hast thou lacked with me that behold thou seekest to go to thine own country and he answered nothing howbeit let me go in any wise and God stirred him up another adversary reason the son of Eliada which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah and he gathered men unto him and became captain over a band when David slew them of Zobah and they went to Damascus and dwelt therein and reigned in Damascus and he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon beside the mischief that hey dad did and abhor to Israel and reigned over Syria and Jeroboam the son of Nebat and Ephrathite of Zerida Solomon's servant whose mother's name was Zeruah a widow woman even he lifted up his hand against the king and this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king Solomon built millo and repaired the breeches of the city of David his father and the man of Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor and Solomon seen the young man that was that he was industrious he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph and it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem that the prophet Ahijah the Shiloh knight found him in the way and he had clad himself with a new garment and they too were alone in the field and Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him and read it in twelve pieces and he said to Jeroboam take the ten pieces for thus saith the Lord the God of Israel behold I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to thee but he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake and for Jerusalem's sake the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel because that they have forsaken me and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon and have not walked in my ways to do that which is right in mine eyes and to keep my statutes and my judgments as did David his father. Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake whom I chose because he kept my commandments and my statutes but I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand and will give it unto the even ten tribes and unto his son will I give one tribe that David my servant may have a light all way before me in Jerusalem the city which I have chosen me to put my name there and I will take thee and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth and shall be king over Israel and it shall be if thou will hearken unto all that I command thee and will walk in my ways and do that is right in my sight to keep my statutes and my commandments as David my servant did that I will be with thee and build thee a sure house as I built for David and will give Israel unto thee and I will for this afflict the seed of David but not forever Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam and Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt unto Shishak king of Egypt and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon and the rest of the acts of Solomon and all that he did and his wisdom are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon and the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was 40 years and Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father and Rehoboam his son reigned in his dead brother Victor would you pray for us right amen well we're continuing right along with the book of first Kings and we went about halfway through chapter number 11 and then we kind of went back and talked about some pictures and things like that with Solomon so we're going to kind of review a little bit of chat wall probably the last half of chapter number 11 starting with the enemies that God stirred up for Solomon and then we're going to get into chapter number 12 we should be able to finish chapter number 12 today I believe we'll have plenty of time with that being said the title of the sermon tonight is the beef between the bone boys okay the beef between the bone boys so we're going to learn what causes this schism here between Rehoboam and Jeroboam I like to call them the bone boys now obviously their names are probably pronounced like Jeroboam you know or something like that I just call them what I call them I got nicknames for everybody that's how I pronounce names it is what it is they'll be fine with it trust me so well with that being said like I said we talked about some pictures talked about last week how Solomon's like a double type you see him you know before his fall like it's the perfect picture of the millennial reign of Christ there's no enemies everything is going well there's no evil plan devised against the nation the economy's booming and things of that nature he's literally ruling the nation of Israel with a rod of iron and then what happens well we talked about this last week being at the beginning of chapter number 11 Solomon's wives eventually led his heart away from the Lord and he commits an abomination which ultimately I mean it's it's the worst abomination to this physical kingdom out of any king because it literally just divides the nation and it would never ever physically be the same again you know there's I was searching for him and I found plenty of preachers online you know and I was listening to how they how they preach this and they're like you know though the ones that do go verse by verse you know through these these books of the Bible they're like okay well the nation split but you guys got to understand they're coming back they're all coming back someday all 12 tribes God knows who they are right now and you better believe it they're coming back okay and we will serve them you know just over and over again these guys are out there and you're gonna see as we study this thing that that is definitely not true okay but let's start talking about her dad here look down at verse number 14 so the Bible says and the Lord stirred up an adversary unto Solomon her dad the Edomite he was of the king's seed and Edom so remember this is chastening okay Solomon's not losing his salvation obviously that's always been impossible that's not what's going on here what does God do he's chastening him and subsequently the nation as a whole is going to bear the the fruits of that unfortunately can now look at verse 17 so jump down to verse 17 it says that a dead fled he in certain Edomites of his father's servants with him to go into Egypt her dad being yet a little child and they arose out of Midian and came to Peran and they took men with them Adopran and they came to Egypt unto Pharaoh king of Egypt which gave him an house and appointed him victuals and gave him land and a dad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh so they gave him to wife the sister of his own wife the sister of Tapides the Queen now interesting here because obviously after this time period here we read that Pharaoh would give his daughter to Solomon okay so it's kind of interesting how God stirs up somebody that he's kind of related to you like an in-law to Solomon here look down jump down to verse number 21 and I want to go over another picture with you guys we're gonna go over two pictures real quick what I see here we're gonna go over a picture of her dad and resin but look at verse 21 so it says when her dad heard in Egypt that David slept with his father's that Joab the captain of the host was dead her dad said to Pharaoh let me depart that I may go to mine own country okay does that sound familiar to anybody let me go up my people go you have a dad who is in Egypt okay petitioning Pharaoh you know he's got the good life right obviously I'm not saying her dad's a good guy you know he abhors Israel he hates God's people okay and that's another kind of interesting point now that I bring that up okay it says the the narrator is clear lets us know that her dad hates Israel okay you know do you think he just started hating Israel like after he left no he's always hated Israel but yet we what do we see we see Pharaoh who would ultimately give his daughter to Solomon you know loving this guy taking care of him okay and what's the lesson in that for us there ain't no fellowship in the world for believers you may think they're on your side you may think you can stick your toes and dabble in the world but at the end of the day the world will always take care of their own you know sometimes we see it sometimes we don't but the fact of the matter is it will always come back to bite you in the backside so so now we see what do we see we see her dad right almost like in the position of Moses you know saying let me go and what is faro like you know it's a little bit different but it says in verse 22 then Pharaoh said unto him but what does that lack with me that behold thou seekest to go to thine own country and he answered nothing how be it let me go in anyways now keep your place there but go to Matthew chapter number 21 Matthew chapter number 21 so it's interesting how all of a sudden Solomon commits an abomination okay several abominations going after these other gods to please his wife and now the roles are literally reversed in the situation here okay you have now her dad who's almost like a Moses here and Solomon has now become quote-unquote like a religious Jew if you will okay and what's the end result what happens well we're gonna read it here in a little bit but a prophets gonna come along and he's gonna make a prophecy to Jeroboam and tell him that because of King Solomon's actions the kingdom is going to be rent out of his hand he's gonna be left with two tribes okay that whole situation here is literally a picture of what we're about to read here in Matthew chapter 21 you guys are familiar with these verses but let's go through them anyways look at verse 41 so this is on the heels of a parable that Jesus gives he's given he's teaching these you know the the haters you know the Pharisees the Sadducees the scribes he's giving him this parable here and in this parable he's basically condemning them for not believing on Christ and in this parable he gives a prophecy about how he would die for sinners in verse 41 the you know because he asked them a question you know they get the they get the answer right in this parable actually you notice the start of verse number 42 okay so Jesus gives us parable we don't have time because we got a lot of stuff to cover wouldn't have time to go over but Jesus gives a parable he asks a question and they get the physical application right okay they get the physical application right but they miss the spiritual part completely why because they're not saved their minds are clouded but verse 42 it says this Jesus saith unto them did ye never read in the scriptures the stone which the builders rejected the same has become the head of the corner this is the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our eyes now notice here what Jesus is saying about what is left of the nation of Israel that they are the builders okay and what did the builders what did the Jews by and large do well they rejected the Messiah the one who was prophesied to come and to die for the sins of the entire world they rejected that okay and so in that rejection they're thinking like well this is great we can get rid of the Messiah and we can establish our physical kingdom but he says this in verse 43 therefore say unto you okay therefore so for that reason because you rejected the stone would be because you rejected this he says therefore say unto you the kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof so the builders or the physical nation of Judah Judea what was left during that time they rejected the Messiah but that literally has no effect on the plans that God has because God takes the kingdom of God from the physical nation what does that mean he takes the Oracle's he takes the power he takes that responsibility that they once had to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world and gives it now to a spiritual nation okay this is so important this is literally what you're seeing a picture of happen in the days of Solomon that we're reading verse 44 it says and whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken but on whomsoever it shall fall it will grind him to powder you know we talked about that that means a lot of different things you know when the Word of God falls on somebody in the Bible says the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword it cuts us in half and it reveals what's inside of us that's why it's so important outsole wanting to use the Word of God not to be of these you know apologetic types that want to go around and try to prove God through logic okay that doesn't work you might get someone to kind of think and scratch their heads but it doesn't produce a change okay we want to be like what it says here in verse 44 and whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken so when we fall down you know spiritually speaking and we put our faith and trust on Christ we are broken we are separated from old man and now into new man but he says but on whomsoever it shall fall it will grind him to powder and that's again what the Word of God does to the world you know the world can sit here and turn their backs and plug their ears and stamp their feet gnash with their teeth it does not matter it does not change what the Word of God says because truth will always grind the world into powder verse 45 look at the result here look at the attitude and the response that this message has on the people of the that do not like this verse 45 it says and when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables they perceived that he spake of them you read this inside gee you perceived that you couldn't you know and look at their action here in verse 46 but when he sought I'm sorry but when they sought to lay hands on him they feared the multitude because they took him for a profit so the chief priests the Pharisees they hear that Jesus is speaking against them he's telling them you're gonna lose everything you know you are not gonna be the nation that you once were my whole point and mission on this earth is not to establish a physical kingdom and what do they want to do they want to kill him they want to lay hands on him they want to physically remove him well go back if you would to Kings chapter number 11 and you'll see that's the same thing that Solomon is about to do when he hears that the Prophet goes to Jeroboam and says you know what you're going to lose the kingdom Solomon it is not going to be like it was when you were younger you know our actions have consequences okay so that's the first picture that I see with her dad he almost becomes like a type of Moses now he's wanting to get out of Egypt and you have Solomon now wanting to just shut up the Prophet in the land okay I mean get this picture here Solomon's worshipping false gods to please his wives right you've got a man of God with the word of God preaching to another person and Solomon's like I'm just gonna kill this guy that ought to solve everything the wisest person to ever live obviously besides the Lord Jesus Christ and here we see him wanting to commit murder to stop the consequences of his own very actions okay so let's see here you're in verse 22 go to verse number 23 let's look at the next picture here verse 23 it says in God stirred him up another adversary resin the son of Elida which fled from his Lord had a desert king of Zoba verse 24 says and he gathered men unto him and became captain over a band when David slew them of Zoba and they went to Damascus and dwelt therein and remained in Damascus verse 25 and he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon besides the mischief that had dad did and he aboard Israel and reigned over Syria so both of these guys they hate the aboard Israel they want nothing to do with it but what do you see now okay you see another role reversal you see resin now and it says here in verse 24 it says and he gathered men unto him and became captain over Ben just like David did when Saul was trying to kill him okay you see that it's like what does this mean here hey you got resin now he's gathering men unto him he's increasing in strength and he's got you know bad and evil intentions obviously David didn't have that but you see now how sin reverses everything when you get this far off course you get this you know this bad like Solomon did and all of us could find ourselves in this situation at any given point you'll start to look at things completely different you know and that's exactly what you're seeing here resin just like David you know getting a band of men you're going out and you know hiding from Solomon trying to plot doing mischief and things of that nature and then now you've got Solomon who's trying to kill a prophet you know and he's probably wishing like how can I get rid of these two guys how can I get rid of her dad how can I get rid of resin you know but he can't because it's the will of God that they would chase in him that they would be stirred up for the purpose of chasing Solomon now you don't have to turn there but Proverbs 14 34 says this righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people okay so understand that as good as they had it during Solomon's early days the sins that Solomon is committing it is definitely affecting the people it is a reproach unto this people and you're gonna see that here in the very beginning of chapter number 12 so let's move on here and start talking about Jeroboam so look at verse 26 the Bible says a Jeroboam the son of Nebat an Ephrathite of Zeratah Solomon's servant whose mother's name was Zerah a widow woman even he lifted up his hand against the king so you got this guy Jeroboam who's a mighty man the Bible will tell us that he's industrious he's a good worker you know he gets things done the Bible says that he winds up lifting his hand up against the king and it's gonna tell us why look at verse 27 says and this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king Solomon built Milo or Millo and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father now nothing wrong there obviously Solomon is in the you know in in build mode he wants to shore up the defenses for his nation you know I definitely don't see a problem with that but what Jeroboam has an issue with is what Samuel said that the people would have an issue with if you want to desire a king guess what your young men are gonna be fighting in the army you're gonna be paying taxes and you're gonna basically have your rights taken from you okay and the people here some people just didn't like that you know they're like we didn't sign up for this it's kind of funny now how when you start going forward you'll start to see this attitude where people are probably wishing I wish we could go back to the days of the judges where they did own their land where they were free where they did have more of a volitional choice in politics but that's not the case here look at verse 28 and the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph okay now obviously he being from the northern territories you know the Bible is giving us that clue there okay this is foreshadowing obviously the Jeroboam would take the northern kingdoms here look at verse 29 says that it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem that the prophet Ahijah the Shiloh knight found him in the way and he had clad himself with a new garment and they too were alone in the field so here you got Jeroboam he's clad himself he's got a new garment he's like all right you know I guess I'm in charge whatever this kind of sucks but I'm just gonna go with the flow here look at verse 30 and Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him and rent it in 12 pieces so how would you feel you get a new garment right remember back then they couldn't just go to you know Fred Meyer or Dillard's and buy a new shirt right this guy's got a he's got a new garment here's this prophet comes up to him and just tears it into 12 chunks you know and he's just like what I wasn't expecting this what does this mean here what's going on verse 31 and he said to Jeroboam take thee ten pieces for thus saith the Lord the God of Israel behold I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to thee okay now obviously we've focused in the past on the stuff that Jeroboam's done and you'll see what he does here in a little while but initially look at how God gives him the option here right God's saying hey through this prophet you know I'm gonna give you these ten tribes here now God doesn't stir Jeroboam up you know to be a terror to the nation of Israel he's saying initially hey you're gonna be the king you're gonna have the larger portion in Israel here and you have a responsibility to do good look at verse 32 it says but he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake and for Jerusalem's sake the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel verse 33 because that they have forsaken me and have worshiped Astrid the goddess of the Zidonians Chemosh the god of the Moabites and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon and have not walked in my ways to do that which is right on mine eyes and to keep my statutes and my judgments as did David his father now obviously you'll see that Benjamin's included in that so the Bible is letting us know here that there is going to be a split the nation will no longer be 12 tribes this is so important for us to understand because most of Christianity today they've got everything mixed up their minds are clouded and just packed full with Zionist doctrine okay when someone asks you what is the nation of Israel okay we have to know what that is you need to ask the question what do you mean by that what are you talking about what nation of Israel because you have the nation of Israel in the Bible okay God's physical nation which was made up of 12 tribes a distinct tribes they all had their distinction they all had their you know their their different standards and things of that nature their own territories it was very clear it wasn't something that you had to guess okay and then you have the Israel of God which is made up of believers which is us save people but you have another Israel today which exists in the Middle East okay which is a fraud which is a hoax and that's the one that everybody focuses on and it just baffles me every time I think about this how you have preachers week after week stand up in front of their congregations and say well there's still 12 tribes over there God knows who they are you see you didn't get that from the Bible where are you getting that from you're getting that from your commentaries you're getting that from your false teachers it's bad doctrine you know God says in the Bible my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge you know the reason why we look stupid the reason why we will look foolish in the eyes of the world is because we don't even know our own history this is not the history of the Jew over in the Middle East this is the history of you and I if you're saved this is your history this is your background here because this kingdom was ordained by God this kingdom was established by God and this is what it is going through and we have to understand this okay and it will never be the same again the northern kingdom of Israel will have their own kings the southern kingdom of Israel is gonna have their own kings and it's gonna be a completely different lineage they're gonna get taken away captive at different times and we'll see that in the coming weeks so let's take a look here at verse 34 it says how be it I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake whom I chose because he kept my commandments and my statutes but I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand and will give it unto thee even ten tribes okay so here Jeroboam's hearing this and you know it's hard to hard to imagine what would be going through his mind at this point here but look at verse 36 it says unto his son will I give one tribe that David my servant may have a light always before me in Jerusalem the city which I have chosen me to put my name there and I will take thee that thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth and shalt be king over Israel and it shall be if thou wilt hearken unto me hearken unto all that I command thee and will walk in my ways and do that is right in my sight to keep my statutes and my Commandments as David my servant did that I will be with thee and build thee a sure house as I built for David and will give Israel unto thee so you see again God is gonna give the northern kingdom of Israel to Jeroboam and he what does he do just like he did to Solomon he gives him conditions he doesn't give him a promise this is yours forever no matter what you do hope you do right hope you follow me if you don't all chasing you okay but it's always gonna be yours that's what we're that's what we're told today was the case but that's not what the Bible says here God says Jeroboam if you don't follow me if you break my statutes you're done you will lose the kingdom you will lose everything just like Solomon did and that's eventually exactly what happens you know of course people will come up to us and they'll email and they'll say well what you're saying right now is that you know they're sitting without a king who are they there's really only two legitimate Israel's the one from the Old Testament and the one that's alive and well today which is made up of believers and our King is Jesus Christ that's it you know that all that other stuff in the Middle East is straight garbage it's just it's a fraud it's a hoax it means nothing they're nothing look at verse 39 and I will for this afflict the seed of David but not forever verse 40 now here's where we get back into that picture with her dad okay so Jesus says hey you know you chief priests you Pharisees you scribes you Sadducees you know you chief elders you people that think that you know the kingdoms they hear in the now you know you think you can reject the Messiah and still prosper what does Jesus say no the kingdom of God will be taken from you okay and I mean that that just speaks volumes the Israel today does not have the kingdom of God it is illegal to go door to door over there and preach the gospel go try it you will wind up in jail now that that's not to say that there aren't say people over there there are say people that you know heard there's churches and things of that nature over there but the prevailing attitude in the streets of Israel is that Jesus Christ is not the Son of God that he was a usurper I mean people just have a horrible things to say about him over there and you know what people have the same attitude here today as well don't they you know it's definitely definitely increasing here but what do we see next well just like when Jesus told the nation of Judea you know the kingdom of God's gonna be taken from you they wanted to lay hands on him well guess what Solomon hears that the kingdom is gonna be taken from him and he wants to lay hands on Jeroboam so verse 40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam and Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt unto Shishak king of Egypt and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon so verse 41 and the rest of the Acts of Solomon all that he did and his wisdom are they not written in the book of the Acts of Solomon and the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was 40 years you know it's really not that long when you think about it you know their nation really had 40 years as like a whole where they had peace they had you know and it really wasn't even the full 40 years right because obviously you know in the midst of that 40 years you know I've maybe towards the latter part of his reign there he starts worshiping these false gods you know but before that they experienced what it would possibly be like to live in a millennium you know I mean as close as you can get without actually being there but I mean 40 years is not a very long time you know I mean we're trying to sit here and you know think about what's gonna happen 40 months from now with the administration that we have you know is there gonna be another a nation left in 40 months 40 days for that matter you know the but these guys here you know they literally got either way you slice it they got 40 years with the wisdom of God you know because I mean even though Solomon was obviously you know he ended bad you know he still did have that wisdom and you know he wrote books there's a lot in the Bible about him look at verse 43 it says and Solomon slept with his father's and he was buried in the city of David his father and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead all right look at verse number one here so it says and okay I'm continuing that rolling right through here and Rehoboam went to Shechem for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king now let's talk about this here you know I would think you know during Solomon's reign you know they he got the temple built a lot of different buildings built I mean Jerusalem it was obvious was the the center so to speak it's the place of worship it's where God said okay I agree I'll put my name here so on and so forth but you know in my mind I read this I think well why did he have everybody come down to Jerusalem to make him king or come up to Jerusalem rather to make him king it's interesting here you know what's the deal why go to Shechem says and Rehoboam went to Shechem for all Israel will come to Shechem to make him king well what's interesting about Shechem you know there's a lot of good things about Shechem in the Bible a few bad things as well for example you can read in Genesis chapter 12 when Abraham leaves Haran with his wife he goes to the land of Canaan he winds up in Shechem and that's where God appears into him and promises him gives him the promised land prophecies and things of that nature what is it judge somewhere in Joshua I can't remember which chapter you'll read about Shechem you'll read about Joseph was buried there judges chapter 9 is where Abimelech you guys remember Bimlech after Gideon dies Bimlech basically convinces the nation of Israel to make him king so he's like a false king he was made king there but what you're gonna see here is that Shechem is in the northern territories of Israel okay when what I think and what I see when I read this here I think that Rehoboam has already starting off in weakness because why couldn't you demand that they come up to Jerusalem and do the coronation there if that's the center of worship if that's the center where everything's at it would make sense to do that but Rehoboam starts off weak and you can even see it as he goes through this and it would make sense because sin is a reproach to any people and literally the nation of Israel the last half of Solomon's life they're in sin you know the Bible is very clear that sin is a reproach to people why is our nation today in such perils you know why are we so divided you know why are people so angry and upset and triggered by everything because of sin because of the promotion of sin and you kind of have the same thing going on at the latter part of Solomon's life here but Rehoboam says you know maybe in his heart he understands and realizes he doesn't have that strength he doesn't have that full leadership capability so he's like well I'll just go up there and then they'll all Israel will come and make me king so let's look at verse number two it says and it came to pass when Jeroboam the son of Nebat who was in Egypt I'm sorry Egypt yeah who is it yet in Egypt heard of it for he was fled from the presence of King Solomon and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt verse 3 that they sent and called him and Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came and spake unto Rehoboam saying thy father made our yoke grievous now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father and his heavy yoke which he put upon us lighter and we will serve thee okay so interesting here that Jeroboam's already gotten that prophecy that he would be king okay but he's not like power-hungry yet you notice that he just hears that Solomon's dead he's like it's probably clear surely the bitterness of death has passed he goes back and all he wants right now at this point in time is for the burden that the king put on them to be lightened to be lessened that's what he desires that's what the people want and now look at how Rehoboam responds look at verse five it says and he said unto them depart yet for three days then come again to me and the people departed this is always smart you know when you don't have the answer right away there's nothing wrong with telling somebody hey you know let me get back to you on that let me think about it unless you're like me and I'll completely forget for a couple weeks you know there's a bunch of text messages and these people fast and I'm just I'm way behind but you know it happens look at verse six and King Rehoboam consulted with the old man that stood before Solomon's father while he yet lived and said how do you advise that I may answer this people here very good thing to do okay obviously these people were under Solomon they were happy with him if you remember that they were they were good they were good to go with that and before I move on here you know another thing that's interesting is that Jeroboam and and these these other guys here you know they don't say it's not recorded with them saying you know hey Rehoboam are you gonna get rid of these false gods you're gonna get rid of Shamash you're gonna get rid of Melkom you're gonna get rid of all these things right what is their concern this is a problem their concern is just the taxes just to the levees just all harsh things that the king imposed on him right but nonetheless Rehoboam he does the right thing initially and he goes and seeks counsel but notice he doesn't have that same wisdom right off the bat that we read Solomon have right Solomon when he's tested at the beginning of his kingship he's got the wisdom of God it just comes right out and he makes that definitive situation the whole nation hears about it Rehoboam's initial reigning starts off with weakness any way you slice it so verse 7 and they spake unto him saying if thou will be a servant unto this people this day and will serve them and answer them and speak good words to them then will they be thy servants for ever now what they're not saying is that you need to pat everybody on the back for every little thing that they do okay this is something that people have a problem with this is something that the world has a problem with today they want to pat on the back for every little thing that they do okay and I think that's wrong okay I don't think that's always a good attitude to have because when things get busy and you know you don't receive that what happens you get offended you get you know you just get upset and things of that nature what these guys are saying is that you need to have a good servant leadership style that's what you need to have you need to serve the people you need to not be worried about you know your image you need to not be worried about all these things that younger people typically get wrapped up in and just be nice to these guys you know don't don't shame them for asking for this look they did the right thing they came to you they stated an issue they didn't just talk trash behind your back and you know remain better and you're right no they said hey we've got a little issue here can you help us okay you know can we can we do some compromising here okay these are real men with real issues and they did the right thing and these old men are just simply saying hey respect that respond right to that okay don't be bitter about that but what happens here look at verse 8 but he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him and which stood before him so he caves into peer pressure okay we call this advice shopping right you know advice shopping when you've got an issue you know what the right advice is you know you hear the right advice but you're like that doesn't really quite hit that button for me okay what does that say about Ray Baum he really didn't want to help these guys out anyways he just figures you know what you were a vagabond you know Jeroboam you fled and my dad wanted to kill you whatever you know the advice of my friends is more important you know you maybe he's thinking in his mind yeah these old guys are gonna retire and I'm gonna be stuck with my friends I better please them okay but they're ignorant that's the bad thing here they are not wise I mean look at how they advise him though verse 9 and he said unto them what counsel give ye that we may answer this people who have spoken unto me saying make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter verse 10 and young men that were grown up with him spake unto him saying thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee saying thy father hath made our yoke heavy but make thou it lighter unto us thus shalt thou say unto them my little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins okay pretty much the same thing anybody would say today you know just just uh we're if you think Solomon's bad I'm gonna be worse okay that's basically what what that means and we're gonna leave it there first 11 and now whereas my father did laid you with a heavy yoke I will add to your yoke my father hath chaste chaste eyes you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions okay you know that's in my opinion it's uncalled for you know it's uncalled for it's not not the way you want to treat people okay it's not the way you want to come out people when they have an issue and they come to you with a problem just like man get the heck out of here you know that's almost like that diatrophies type attitude you know there's a popular pastor I can't think of his name right now old IFB guy but I was talking with a with a brother at Verde a few years ago and he was telling me that this this popular preacher came to their church you know and preached a sermon and you know there was somebody in the in the congregation was a huge fan of this pastor and was like I can't wait to ask him this you know I just really want to get his thoughts and opinions on this and he goes up or she goes up to this pastor he's like pastor just quick question for you and he's like you know basically like a quick question or is this gonna be one of those that I've got to write you a letter you know just just basically kind of responded to her in the same manner you know that broke her that shattered her she never came back to church is what my friend said I mean think about that you know words mean things it's powerful but that's kind of what you have going on here you know Ray bones pride from his friends it's just clicks together and they're like you know what we're gonna hit you ten times harder than my father did and look at the result this is what starts the beef here verse 12 so Jeroboam and all the people came to Ray ball in the third day as the king had appointed saying come to me again the third day verse 13 and the king answered the people roughly and forsook the old man's counsel that they gave him you know I'm always up for listening to people who have a lot of experience in life you know I deal with people of all ages with my work and a lot of times I'll ask them you know what was it like when you're younger you know not trying to be insulting or anything like that but man you know they live during a different time you know it's in it's often very interesting to hear their thoughts and their opinions and how they would deal with things in the mistakes that they made I think it's very valuable but here Ray above me just we don't need any of that junk verse 14 and spake to them after the council of the young man saying my father made your yoke heavy and I will add to your yoke my father also chastised you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions wherefore the King Harken not unto the people for the cause was from the Lord that he might perform his saying which the Lord spake by a hygienic the Shilomite unto Jeroboam the son of the bat okay so this thing here was prophesied from the Lord you know and obviously through the process that we seen with Solomon going after other gods to please his wives that be you know bringing sin into land become a reproach weakened Rehoboam all the ingredients are there to violate that hedge of protection that we all desperately need in our lives and so Rehoboam no longer has that hedge of protection because of that and so God is saying hey basically this is why this happened we're gonna we're gonna I'm gonna use Rehoboam and I'm going to chasten this nation yeah I mean sorely you know you see what we have to understand here in people I've heard I've heard our critics say things like this well why did God punish the whole nation for what Solomon did do you think Solomon was the only one going after these gods I mean hopefully by now you would have read through judges you would have read through you know first and second Samuel and just seen the constant up and down that the children of Israel had with God people went after these gods it wasn't only Solomon and his wives okay and so God is seeing that and God has been dealing with this now for however many years you know and it's like I'm done with this I'm ready to move things forward to be done with this physical nation and take the kingdom of God from them and bring it to a nation bringing fruits before bringing forth the fruits thereof so let's move on here verse 16 says so when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them the people answered the king saying what portion have we in David neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse to your tents Oh Israel now see to thy own house David so Israel departed unto their tents and there you have it the the nation is now fractured never to be the same again never there's no verse in the Bible that says the physical nation will come back and all of a sudden bow the knee and worship Jesus Christ and then Christians who are Gentiles will come and serve them and clean under their tables and so on and so forth and that doesn't exist that's made up you made that up okay completely different I mean time period now that we're gonna be studying here look at verse 17 says but as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah Rabom reigned over them verse 18 thinking Rabom sent a dorm who was over the tribute and all Israel stoned him with stones that he died therefore King Rabom made speed to get him up to his chariot to flee to Jerusalem okay so these people are not playing around okay when they said to your tents Oh Israel they meant it they're like we're done we don't need this anymore this is the final nail in the coffin here to never be reunited again look at verse 19 so Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day verse 20 and it came to pass when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again that they sent and called him unto the congregation and made him King over Israel there was none that followed the house of David but the tribe of Judah only and so again there you have it now you have the for the first time the nation is completely cut in half and think about how quick this is you know when you're reading this through we've been studying and breaking this down a little bit here and there but when you read this through it's just like Solomon's on the scene and then bam the nation's done for I mean it's that fast it's just super quick how fast this happens and of course that's how fast we can destroy our own selves with sin and different things that we allow to come into our lives and hang out verse 21 and when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem he assembled all the house of Judah with the tribe of Benjamin and hundred and four score thousand chosen men which were warriors to fight against the house of Israel to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon so of course here Rehoboam either doesn't know the prophecy doesn't care and all he could think about is I got to get my kingship back I've got to be the king over the whole thing here verse 22 but the Word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God saying speaking to Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin and to the remnant of the people saying thus saith the Lord you shall not go up nor fight against your brethren okay so here Rehoboam is gonna get this prophecy here that he is not to go up and fight against his brethren the children of Israel return every man to his house for this thing is from me and then look what it says next they hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord in return to depart according to the word of the Lord so this is from God this is from the Lord God is clearly telling Rehoboam you are not to go up and fight against Jeroboam your brother interesting here okay there's only one time we talked about this this morning I think brother Vic brought this up there's only one time and in the nation of Israel's history where God was willing to allow them to completely obliterate their brethren right and when was that yeah the tribe of Benjamin you know God was willing in the book of Judges go read Judges 19 through the end of the book God was ready willing and able to allow the nation of Israel to completely cut the tribe of Benjamin off all because they harbored Sodomites but I don't want to get off on that I just bring that up because it's here okay verse 25 it says then Jeroboam built Shechem and Mount Ephraim and dwelt therein and went out from thence and built Penuel okay so we're reading and it is very quick but we're reading the establishment essentially of now kind of like two new nations okay so when Rehoboam takes over the southern kingdom here right away he hearkens to the word of the Lord you know as hard as that probably was for him you know the prophet comes and says hey you're not to go up and fight okay they actually back off and they hold to the word of God you know that kind of attitude there would be the prevailing attitude you know for the rest of the nation now they're gonna have some kings that are definitely bad we're gonna get into them but Israel on the other hand the northern kingdom boy they have it rough there's only one guy that even remotely follows Lord and that's Jehu and I can't wait till we get to him because he's one of my favorite guys in the Bible but verse 25 okay then Jeroboam built Shechem in Mount Ephraim and dwelt therein and went out from thence to build Penuel kind of interesting you know he builds Penuel remember Gideon right how he went back and beat down the tower of Penuel and here we see Jeroboam rebuilding it okay he understands he's got to act quick he's got to start you know basically building his defenses here and you're gonna see that he's concerned that he might lose his people even though he was already promised this promised these tribes he's he's still got some issues in his heart look verse 26 and Jeroboam said in his heart now shall the kingdom return to the house of David so instantly he gets the kingship and he's worried right he's worried like I'm gonna lose these guys here and here's why verse 27 if this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their Lord even unto Rehoboam king of Judah and they shall kill me and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah so he starts off paranoid right a lot of people a lot of leaders start off paranoid and things of that nature he is definitely paranoid he's like okay wait a second here something I didn't think of the temples in Jerusalem we're supposed to go there three times a year wait a second here when the people go back they're gonna get basically their hearts are gonna go back to Rehoboam what are we gonna do here okay well what does any good false prophet do make up your own religion right make up your own deal look at verse 28 whereupon the king took counsel and made two calves of gold and said unto them it is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem behold thy gods O Israel which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt so again what do you have here you know the same old golden calf you know I wonder who he took counsel from what was their attitudes like you know well it's been you know a few thousand years since Aaron did this and that where I got the guys excited they fell for it you know Jeroboam you could do the same thing okay so initially they set this system up okay and they're not at first like okay these are separate gods this is Chemosh and this is Milcom no look what he says we'll start in verse 28 says whereupon the king took counsel and made two calves of gold and said unto them it is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem so again you know he does what the government always does I'm from the government and I'm here to help you okay which is you know Reagan told us that was bad and he was right behold thy gods O Israel which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt okay so he's saying hey we'll use these to represent the God that brought us up out of the land of Egypt okay but is that gonna sustain is that gonna hold over first of all it's it's a violation of the Word of God I mean clearly but look at what the result of that is verse 29 and he set the one in Bethel and the other put he in Dan and this thing became a sin for the people went to worship before the one even to Dan okay obviously you guys know how this turns out it turns out horrible becomes a completely separate religion this actually starts beef that goes all the way up until you know Christ is on the earth talking to the woman at the wall you know and Jesus like you don't even know what you worship how come you say we have to go to Jerusalem hey well this is where that all started look at verse 31 and he made in house of high places and made priests of the lowest of the people which were not of the sons of Levi so look at how Israel or the northern kingdom of Israel starts out violating the Word of God on every point like they're violating everything okay now shall have no other gods before me check we can violate that one and just going down the commandments just boom let's do the opposite of every single one of these things and just completely start over let's you know we don't need Levi's we'll just make the lowest of the people priests right don't they deserve a shot don't they deserve equality right there's too much inequality going around here you know that's how North Korea got in the position that they're in today go study their history way back in the day I forgot which one of the Jung bong's it was but you know these guys basically on the scene and said you know there we have a problem with inequality in this nation okay we got all these issues here and I'll give you equality if you give me your land you give me your heart essentially okay and now you have a totalitarian state where he wants to control and does control exactly what you're allowed to even think controls what you're allowed to wear what you're allowed to eat and I mean that's kind of what I see going on here it's kind of the same type of attitude here you know it's like oh why do we need the Levi's you know God clearly said in the Bible that the priests were supposed to be the sons of Aaron you know if you were gonna be a worker you know things of that nature pertaining to you know the temple and the sacrifices it was the tribe of Levi that were supposed to partake in that and to minister to that the tithes were supposed to come in to help that tribe they you know we've gone over that in great detail in the past but Jeroboam's like yeah let's give somebody else a chance you know anybody could do that job anybody could do it yeah it's no big deal here right be careful because that is very dangerous look down in verse 32 Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month on the 15th day of the month like unto the feast that is in Judah and he offered upon the altar so did he in Bethel sacrificing unto the calves that he had made and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made so back to the high places again you know I mean just everything is wrong here right off the bat verse 33 so he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the 15th day of the eighth month even in the month which he had devised don't miss this of his own heart and or date a feast unto the children of Israel and he offered upon the altar and burnt incense I mean like it we would be here all night if we went back to the law and like here's how he violated this I mean everything is bad just his whole everything is just just wrong a complete and total violation of Scripture and it's the same thing that we have today when we take a look and we tear apart new evangelical Christianity they literally start at the top with the preservation of the Word of God the power of God the oracles the literal Kingdom of God and they attack that and then they go on down the list oh you know it says that a pastor should be the husband of one wife we don't need to worry about that I think that a divorced guy I think a woman yeah I think a tranny could do just as good of a job God loves everybody and they start making the lowest of the people priests or pastors you know yeah you know I know the stuff about idolatry you know but we got to get people up on stage here you know and get people really moving and swaying back and forth and getting some sensationalism going it's the same thing we see today in religion all goes back to this it all goes back to Satan either way you slice it so there you have it we're gonna stop right there and we will pick it up in chapter number 13 next week let's bow our heads and have order prayer thank you so much Lord again for your word and for preserving these great truths for us Lord that we may learn and grow from these accounts that happened long long ago I just pray that you'd be with us as we go throughout the week Lord and bless the fellowship after the service in Jesus name I pray amen all right
