Amen so the title of my sermon tonight is fundamental truths about the Holy Ghost fundamental truths About the Holy Ghost a lot of false doctrine about the Holy Ghost the third person of the Holy Trinity tonight I'm gonna look at five facts five truths. We can learn from Scripture fundamental truths about the Holy Spirit we'll see him referenced in the Bible as the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost as the Spirit of the Lord and God is a Trinity there are three persons in the Holy Trinity the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost The Bible says these three are one we believe there are three distinct Persons three wills three centers of consciousness one essence one God in Luke chapter 3 if you would look down at your Bible at verse 15 where the Bible says and as the people were an Expectation and all men mused in their hearts of John whether he were the Christ or not John answered saying unto them all I indeed baptized you with water But one mightier than I come at the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to one loose He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire So John the Baptist speaks of a time where people are gonna be baptized with the Holy Ghost And if you would skip down to verse number 21 where the Bible says in verse 21 there in Luke chapter 3 Now when all the people were baptized it came to pass that Jesus also being baptized in praying the heaven was opened and the Holy Ghost Descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him and a voice came from heaven Which said thou art my beloved son in thee. I am well pleased. This is a tremendous Verse here in Luke chapter 3 verse 22, which shows the Trinity we see the Father We see the Son Jesus Christ and we see the Holy Ghost Descending upon him the body the Bible says in a bodily shape Like a dove the Holy Spirit has a body the Holy Spirit is a person. He's not an energy He's not a force. He's a person He's the third person of the Trinity the reason why people are confused about this is because of false religion It's because of false doctrine But it's also the influence of pop culture today when I think of the force I think of Star Wars I think of stupid movies coming from Hollywood. The Bible doesn't cheat doesn't teach that the Holy Ghost is some impersonal force or energy he is God And we have to establish that fact we have to know who God is and we have to understand who God is From the Bible we got to get everything we believe from the Word of God Not from charlatans who were trying to confuse you now if you would go to Acts chapter number 5 Acts chapter number 5 the very first truth. I want to go over tonight Is that the Holy Spirit is God now we get excited when we talk about or when we defend rather The deity of Jesus Christ and we should because if Jesus was just a man Everybody would be on their way to hell today because a man cannot pay for your sins It was Jesus Christ who paid for our sins on the cross and the Bible teaches very clearly that the Holy Ghost is God in first John chapter 5 verse 7 the Bible says there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the Holy Ghost and these three are One it's one God made up of three persons We should defend the deity of the Holy Ghost just like we defend the deity of Jesus Christ The Father was a hundred percent God The Son is a hundred percent God and the Holy Spirit is a hundred percent God you say well How can I make logical sense of that? It's what the Bible says. That's all you need to know take it by faith Acts chapter 5 look at verse number 1 The Bible says there but a certain man named Ananias with Sapphira his wife sold a possession and kept back part of the price his wife also being privy to it and Brought a certain part and laid it at the Apostles feet but Peter said Ananias why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost and to keep back part of the price of the land So we see a possession here that was sold by Ananias and Sapphira and they lied about the profit they made as a result of selling this possession the land Look at what the Bible says in verse number four Whilst it remains was it not thine own and after it was sold was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Listen to this thou hast not lied unto men but unto God So we see the Holy Ghost and God used Interchangeably in verse number three. We see the Holy Ghost there and then he's referred to as God in verse number four Proving that the Holy Spirit is God Peter says they lied to the Holy Ghost and it's used interchangeably with that It's also worth noting that This passage wouldn't make any sense if the Holy Spirit wasn't God if he wasn't a hundred percent Deity in Hebrews chapter 9 You don't have to turn there The Bible says how much more shall the blood of Christ who through the eternal spirit offered himself without spot to God Purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God those who are trying to work their way to heaven are Exhibiting dead works those works ain't gonna get them there but the Bible says here that through the eternal spirit he offered himself without spot to God and Eternality is an attribute of deity. We know that the Father has always existed we know that Jesus Christ has always existed and yes, the Holy Ghost has always existed and We see him in creation as well If you read Genesis chapter 1 the Bible says the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters So he had a hand in creation Let's read I'm gonna read for you actually second Corinthians 3 where the Bible says nevertheless When it shall turn to the Lord the veil shall be taken away now The Lord is that spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty So the Bible says in 2nd Corinthians 3 the Lord is that spirit? 2nd Timothy 3 16 says all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction in Righteousness every word in your King James Bible tonight is inspired by God himself Now go to 1st Peter chapter number 1 1st Peter chapter number 1 the point I want to make here improving the deity of the Holy Ghost is if the Bible is inspired by God and Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost that would make the Holy Ghost God I I'm sorry. I told you to go to 1st Peter chapter number 1. I meant 2nd Peter chapter 1 Sorry about that 2nd Peter chapter 1 and when you get there look at verse 20 2nd Peter chapter 1 verse 20 The Bible says there knowing this first that no prophecy of the scriptures of any private interpretation for the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man But holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost scripture is inspired by God and we see the Bible teaches here that Prophecy of Scripture came from men of God who were moved by the Holy Ghost. And so the Holy Spirit is deity 100% we believe the Trinity in this church Like I said at the top of the sermon three distinct persons three wills three centers of consciousness one God It's what the Bible teaches Now my second point is that the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth The Bible says in 1st, John 5 This is he that came by water and blood even Jesus Christ Not by water only but by water and blood and then it says and it is the spirit that beareth witness Because the spirit is truth and if you're saved tonight You have that spirit of truth inside you and you can rely on him To teach you the Word of God you can rely on him to understand Bible doctrine This is why unsaved people don't understand doctrine half the time and it's because they don't have the spirit of truth Jesus says that those who are his will hear God's words In John 14 26 the Bible says but the comforter which is the Holy Ghost whom the Father will send in my name He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I Said unto you. So again, it's the truth. It's the spirit of truth that's inside you. He's inside you You've been sealed with the Holy Spirit and greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world Go to John chapter 16 if you would John chapter number 16 This is why in conversations when you're talking Bible doctrine amongst the brethren here at steadfast Baptist Church Don't you notice sometimes that verses kind of pop into your head? Involuntarily, don't you notice that you think of certain scriptures to go to in the midst of a Bible conversation? That's because you're walking in the spirit at that moment You're fellowshiping with your brothers and sisters in Christ your spirit bears witness with their spirit And so the Holy Spirit brings things into your remembrance the Holy Spirit guides you into all truth Now as you're turning to John 16 I want to read out of John 15 where the Bible says and when the comforter is come this is Jesus talking whom I will send unto you from the Father even the spirit of truth which proceedeth from the Father He shall testify of me and he also shall bear witness because he have been with me from the beginning So the spirit of truth the Bible says will testify of Jesus Christ He will help you to understand The Word of God and this is why God has to have that triune nature if God is loved But he's a oneness God then he loves himself But we know according to what the Bible teaches that the Father loves the Son the loves The Son loves the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit loves the Father Now in John chapter 16 take a look at verse 13 John chapter 16 verse 13 It says how be it when he the spirit of truth is come He will guide you into all truth for he shall not speak of himself But whatsoever he shall hear that shall he speak and he will show you things to come He shall glorify me for he shall receive of mine and shall show it unto you all things that the Father hath are mine Therefore said I that he shall take of mine and shall show it unto you. So the mysteries of God What's Jesus talking about here? The fact that the mysteries of God can be unlocked to the believer to those who trust Jesus Christ for salvation You have that spirit of truth which can lead you to all truth You don't need man to interpret the Bible for you. It's not a necessity You don't need somebody to tell you what God said you can read it for yourself you can understand doctrine for yourself You can lock yourself in a room for a few hours with nothing But a Bible sit down and read it and understand what God said it just takes time. It takes practice you say well I've already read the Bible cover to cover and I'm no expert. Well, that's obvious. It's gonna take repetition You might have to read it twice three times four times five times six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen times and Every single time you read it you're gonna notice you learn more and more and more That's because you have the spirit of truth inside you teaching you all things You don't need a man to teach you there are some religions However, that would teach like the Catholics do you need a man? You need a priest to tell you what God said you need a pope to tell you what God said you need a man You must rely on sinful man to tell you the Word of God that's stupidity you have God inside you and that's all you need So what I would do Tonight is implore you not to be a lazy Christian Don't remain a baby in Christ for the rest of your life spend time studying doctrine reading your Bible Understanding what it says now preachers can be extremely helpful. That's why you go to church, right? Preachers can be extremely helpful in the sense. They can perfect your knowledge They can show you things that perhaps you didn't find yet, but it's all the same truth It would be possible for you to find that truth on your own But preachers can help you perfect your faith and perfect and perfect your knowledge of the Word of God So preachers do have a very important role to play. I don't want anyone here to think I'm trying to diminish that by any means So if you would go to 1st Corinthians chapter 2 1st Corinthians chapter 2 what I'm talking about is that the Holy Ghost will guide you into all truth so Far we've established that the Holy Spirit is God. He is the third person of the Trinity. He has a personality He's not an energy force. This isn't Star Wars. He is a person and We saw in the book of Acts if you read the book of Acts I'm not gonna have time to go into it tonight But in the book of Acts you see the Apostles were directed by the Holy Spirit He told them where to go. He told them where to preach the gospel. He directed them. He forbade them from going certain places He is our director as well Now I'm gonna read out of Luke 12 where the Bible says and whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man It shall be forgiven him but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost. It shall not be forgiven So this is teaching those who would blaspheme the Holy Ghost That Particular sin will not be forgiven Obviously only an unsaved person can do that because the Bible says that a good tree cannot bring forth corrupt fruit This is also talking about those who looked on Jesus and said he healed people through the power of the devil That would be blasphemy of the Holy Ghost, but it continues you're turning to 1st Corinthians 2 I'm reading out of Luke 12 and when they bring you unto the synagogues and unto magistrates and powers Take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer or what ye shall say for the Holy Ghost Shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say So the Bible is teaching here that the Holy Ghost taught the Apostles what to say Jesus said that the Holy Ghost would teach them what they would have to utter if they were ever in a situation Where they were being persecuted if they were brought forward to the magistrates if they were brought forward to the wicked people who healed God who are trying to stop the gospel from being disseminated around Jerusalem and the Holy Ghost the Bible says here will teach you so I take the application that if we ever Find ourselves in a situation whether it's during the Great Tribulation Period or any time before that where we where we are brought forth in front of evil people Whether it's the local police department or whoever it might be the Holy Ghost will teach us what we ought to say Now you're there in 1st Corinthians 2 Notice what the Bible says in verse 1 and I brethren when I came to you came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom Declaring unto you the testimony of God for I determined not to know anything among you save Jesus Christ and him crucified and I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling and my speech and my preaching was not with Enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and of power Verse 5 that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men But in the power of God our faith does not stand in the wisdom of men We're not Christians tonight because some pseudo-intellectual preached us Apologetics, we're Christians tonight because a man of God showed us what the Bible says about salvation straight out of a King James Bible And we ought to rely on the wisdom that comes from God the wisdom that comes from the Holy Ghost Not the wisdom that comes from men these people that want to try and make logical arguments for the invention for the existence of God and Apologetics and they go and they debate all these atheists. It's a total waste of time We're not supposed to obsess over that garbage. We should want the wisdom that God has given us through the Holy Spirit It's that easy we don't rely on that wisdom it's fake it's a front it's synthetic and So what Paul is saying is he hit the wisdom he conveyed stemmed from the Holy Spirit Not the wisdom of men and certainly not pseudo-intellectual arguments skip to verse number 9 But as it is written I have not seen nor ear heard Neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love him But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit For the Spirit searcheth all things yea the deep things of God You say I want to graduate from the milk of the word to the meat of the word I want to understand the deep things of God well Then walk in the spirit Because the Bible says here that it's the spirit who knows the deep things of God if you walk in the spirit if you take Time to study the Word of God if you take time out of your day Just you and the Holy Spirit you can graduate from the milk of the word to the meat of the word you can graduate from Being a babe in Christ and that should be our goal Look at verse 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him Even so the things of God knoweth no man But the Spirit of God now we have received not the spirit of the world But the spirit which is of God that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God We can know the things of God because the spirit dwells in us That's the point. He's making and That's why we compare spiritual things with spiritual things We don't go to the world and and use carnal examples as the basis as the fundamentals of our faith We go to spiritual things. That's why we use Ephesians chapter 1 to help us interpret what the word Predestination means in Romans chapter 8 you compare spiritual with spiritual look at verse 14 in 1st Corinthians 2 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God for their foolishness unto him Neither can he know them because they're spiritually discerned You say why is it that Tyler Baker can't understand clear scriptures? Proving the Trinity the normal Trinity not this weird variation He's come up with in his cult across the across town from us It's because he doesn't have the Spirit of God and the Bible says that if you don't have the Spirit of God The Bible says the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God if you have the Holy Ghost Obviously you can understand Bible doctrine those who don't have him can't understand Bible doctrine even when you show them clear scriptures This is why the unsaved world Laughs at us they laugh at the women in this church who wear skirts and dresses who actually dress like women What a concept they laugh at the men in this church who believe they should be the ones who are providing for their families And that their women shouldn't be submitting to some boss and a mega conglomerate somewhere They laugh at us because we actually believe the Word of God because the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God They can't understand it They look at us and they think we're a bunch of crazy people because they don't Understand the things of the Spirit of God it makes no sense to them. They don't have the Holy Spirit First Corinthians chapter 12, I'm gonna read this you don't have to go there first Corinthians 12 The Bible says wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God Calleth Jesus accursed and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost Yes, because you have the Holy Spirit inside you it means there are certain doctrines. You will not believe nobody here is gonna say Jesus is accursed the Bible says no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed That's the easiest way to tell somebody's an unsaved heretic It's what these Hebrew rooters do they claim the name of Jesus is a curse that it's actually Yeshua But nobody here would do that Nobody who's saved would suddenly believe in a work salvation or become a hardcore God hating atheist because you have the spirit of truth. Let's take advantage of it and not waste that Now the first point I made is the Holy Spirit is God the second point I made is the Holy Spirit will guide you into The third point I'm gonna make now is the Holy Spirit came upon Individuals in the Old Testament a lot of people wonder what about the Holy Ghost in the Old Testament? How did he work in the Old Testament? Well, let's learn about that if you would go to Numbers chapter 11 Numbers chapter 11, let's talk about the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament in the Old Testament the Spirit of the Lord temporarily indwelled people and Temporarily came upon people and what happened when that occurred is they preached the result of being filled with the Spirit is preaching men of God who get up here behind this pulpit and they Preach hard against sin are filled with the Spirit the result of being filled with the Spirit isn't speaking Gibberish like the Pentecostals do the result of being filled with the Spirit is preaching preaching the gospel Preaching sermons behind the pulpit now in Numbers chapter 11 look at verse 11 And let's look at an exam I'm gonna look at a few examples here in the Old Testament of the Holy Spirit coming upon people This is how he works in the Old Testament look at verse 11 and Moses said unto the Lord wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant and Wherefore have I not found favor in thy sight that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me Have I conceived all this people have I begotten them that thou shouldest say unto me carry them in thy bosom as a Nursing father beareth the sucking child unto the land which thou swearst unto their fathers Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people for they weep unto me saying give us flesh that we may eat I'm not able to bear all this people alone because it's too heavy for me And if thou deal with us with me kill me I pray thee out of hand if I have found favor in thy sight and let me not see my wretchedness So Moses reaches his breaking point here because the Israelites are incessantly whining They're complaining. They're whining about not having any food They're whining about the conditions in the wilderness and Moses just can't take it anymore He says why have you dealt this with me Moses pleads with God and he even contemplates death Because it's just too much for him to handle. He can't do it all Multitudes of people in the wilderness are relying on Moses to get to the Promised Land and it's a really tough Situation for him to deal with look at verse 16 and the Lord said unto Moses gather unto me 70 men of the elders of Israel whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people and Officers over them and Bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation that they may stand there with thee and I will come down and talk with thee there and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee and will put it upon them and they shall bear the burden of The people with thee that thou bear it not thyself alone We see the Calvary appointed here by God to help Moses in his situation The 70 men are ordained they get the Holy Ghost This happens today when a man gets ordained by a pastor the Holy Ghost, right? They lay hands on him signifying that he's getting a portion of the Holy Spirit, right? So these 70 men are ordained by God to help Moses Because he just couldn't take it anymore and notice what it says that the Holy Spirit which is upon thee upon Moses will be put On them because that's what happened in the Old Testament you had Temporary indwelling and a temporary Filling of the Holy Ghost as well as it a temporary anointing of the Holy Spirit now go to Judges chapter 3 Let's look at another example of how the Holy Spirit works in the Old Testament Judges chapter number 3 I'm gonna take a look at the judge off kneel in Judges chapter 3 off kneel and it just why you go there I'm gonna read out of Judges 14 talking about Samson where the Bible says then went Samson down and his father and his mother to Timnath and came to the vineyards of tin math Timnath and behold a young lion Roared against him and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him and he rent him as he would have rent a kid And he had nothing in his hand But he told not his father or his mother what he had done So Samson defeated a lion Why because the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him the Spirit of the Lord? Brings victory if you want victory in your life be filled with the spirit. That's what happens The devil is a roaring lion and his influence can corrupt your Christian life today If you're not walking in the spirit consistently Look at Judges 3 verse 7 and the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and Forgot the Lord their God and served Balaam and the groves Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel and he sold them into the hand of Kushan Rish that Risha Thayim king of Mesopotamia and the children of Israel served Kushan Risha Thayim eight years You'll have to forgive me if I didn't pronounce that right Look at verse number nine and when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel who delivered them even off kneel the son of keen as Caleb's younger brother So this begins the cycle of the Israelites repeatedly turning against God over and over and over again God giving them a deliverer they plead with God for a deliverer They get one and then they go back to being wicked again and it happens over and over here in the book of Judges look At verse 10 and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him talking about off kneel And he judged Israel and went out to war and the Lord delivered Kushan Risha Thayim king of Mesopotamia Into his hand and his hand prevailed against Kushan Risha Thayim and the land had rest 40 years and off kneel The son of keen as died so God raises up a deliverer off kneel to save the children of Israel from the king of Mesopotamia And the Spirit of the Lord comes upon off kneel That's what he did in the Old Testament. There was no permanent indwelling in the Old Testament. It was temporal It was an anointing. It was a filling. It was an indwelling, but it wasn't permanent Now go to 2nd Chronicles 24 2nd Chronicles 24 Let's look at another situation here in the Old Testament where the Holy Spirit came upon someone In Judges 3 the Holy Spirit came upon off kneel. He judged the children of Israel He delivered them from the hands of from the hand of the king of Mesopotamia and in 2nd Chronicles 24 What we're gonna talk about next is basically after Athaliah who is a wicked woman the Bible actually directly refers to her as a wicked woman she broke up the house of God and King Joash of Judah He ends up repairing it but once he repairs the temple he turns his back on the Lord and so like we see so many times in Scripture a Prophet preaches against him and he doesn't like it very much, but we'll notice that the Prophet preaches after the anointing of the Holy Ghost Look at you're in 2nd Chronicles 24 Look at verse 20 and the Spirit of God came upon Zachariah the son of Jehoiada the priest Which stood above the people and said unto him thus sayeth God why? Transgress ye the commandments of the Lord that ye cannot prosper because ye have forsaken the Lord he hath also forsaken you Now I want to make this point. This is very important Although there wasn't a permanent indwelling in the Old Testament there is something similar between the Old Testament and the New Testament with regard to the manner in which the Holy Ghost worked and in the New Testament you can be filled with the Holy Spirit just like men of God were in the Old Testament and What happens in the Old Testament is when you're filled with the Spirit you preach and in the New Testament? What happens when you're filled with the Spirit your you preach? It's the same thing now take a look at verse number 21 and they conspired against him and Stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him but slew his son and when he died, he said the Lord look upon it and require it so notice the Bible says there that the Spirit of God came upon the son of Jehoiada the priest and He preaches against Joash. Joash doesn't like it people who are called out for their sin often don't like it He didn't he wasn't an exception and he retaliates But the key there is the way the Holy Ghost works in the Old Testament Now it's also worth noting that the Holy Spirit can leave people in the Old Testament. We saw that in the life of King David Now go to Psalm 51 Go to Psalm 51 and let's look at what David said about the Holy Spirit leaving if you say why did the Holy Spirit leave him? Because of the fact he committed adultery with another man's wife and then got that rightful husband Murdered, right? So the Holy Spirit left him. This does not mean he lost his salvation salvation in the Old Testament was by faith just like it is in the New Testament and People who were saved by faith in the Old Testament had eternal security Just like we do the difference is though The Holy Spirit can leave people in the New Testament in the Old Testament But in the New Testament the gas tank will never hit empty now You might not be filled with the Holy Ghost all the time But that gas tank is never going to go completely empty because we have the permanent indwelling in First Samuel 16 the Bible says but the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and an evil spirit from the Lord Troubled him so when Saul was rejected from being King the Bible says that the Spirit of the Lord left him an evil spirit replaced him and so the Spirit of the Lord can leave people when they go into wicked sin when they turn their back on God and Today in the New Testament if you choose to quench the Spirit, you're not going to be filled with the Spirit You're not going to exhibit the fruits of the Spirit Now in Psalm 51 David after he transgresses big-time against God and commits adultery and gets the rightful husband murdered He says in verse 10. He writes about it here in Psalm 51. He's lamenting about it and in verse 10 He says created me a clean heart Oh God and renew a right spirit within me Cast me not away from thy presence and take not thy Holy Spirit from me He says in verse 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation and uphold me with thy free spirit Like I said if somebody loses the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, they didn't lose their salvation and notice He says restore and restore unto me the joy of my salvation He's not saying restore restore unto me my salvation itself He's talking about the joy of salvation and guess what if you live a wicked life You're not gonna have the joy of salvation David lost that because of what he chose to do with Bathsheba So the Holy Spirit can leave people in the Old Testament the Holy Spirit's anointing is temporary The indwelling is temporary and the filling is temporary as well But now let's compare that to the New Testament. I already touched on it a little bit But let's compare this to the New Testament so far. I've said if you would go to John chapter 14, by the way John chapter 14 So far I've said the Holy Ghost the Holy Spirit is God 100% God I said the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth. I Said the Holy Spirit came upon individuals in the Old Testament. They didn't have the permanent indwelling Now I'm going to talk about the New Testament the Holy Spirit Permanently indwells people in the New Testament. You're sealed until the day of redemption the Bible says I Looked at Othniel. I looked at I looked at David. We looked at some other who else we look at here I can't believe I forgot looked at King Joash. I looked also at Samuel and Zechariah and there are other examples as well. I don't have all day to go through them, but It was temporary now in the New Testament. It's permanent. Look at John chapter 14 and verse 15 Jesus says here if you love me keep my Commandments and I will pray the Father and he shall give you another comforter that he may abide with you forever Even the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not neither knoweth him but ye know him for he dwelleth with you and Shall be in you. I will not leave you comforted comfortless I will come to you. So Jesus says the Spirit of God will be inside those who believe him How do people get the Spirit of God when they get saved when they believe on the Lord Jesus Christ? They get the Holy Spirit They're sealed until the day of redemption the Bible teaches in Ephesians chapter 1 which we'll look at here in moments But Jesus teaches here that in the New Testament, there's a permanent indwelling you have him forever Now Just like in the Old Testament, it's possible to have different levels right in the New Testament It's possible for somebody to have different levels of the Spirit You could be filled with the Spirit or not But again, but at the end of the day that gas tank will never hit empty. Like I said earlier now go to Acts chapter 2 Acts chapter 2 in Luke 1 the Bible says and his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost and Prophecied saying blessed be the Lord God of Israel for he hath visited and redeemed his people and hath raised up and horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David So when the father of John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Ghost he preached He didn't speak an unintelligible language. He preached that's the result That's one of the fruits of the Spirit and what I want to look at here in Acts chapter 2 is the day of Pentecost We saw the indwelling of the Spirit here We saw the anointing of the Spirit as well and the miracle of speaking with tongues in verse number one in Acts 2 the Bible says and when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there Appeared unto them cloven tongues like as a fire and it sat upon each of them And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance So this is a miracle Orchestrated by God they had cloven tongues like as a fire Literally on top of them and when the Bible uses the word tongues we're gonna see in the following verses. It's talking about languages, it's not what the Pentecostals do rolling around like fools in the aisle way and jumping and hopping around looking like Demon possessed crazy people what the Bible is meaning what it talks about tongues It's another language the miracle was that these people were able to hear the Word of God in their own language It would be like if I got up here and started speaking Arabic Brother Joe would be the only one who would mildly be able to understand what I'm saying. Everyone else here wouldn't have a clue But if we were at the day of Pentecost you would be understanding what I'm saying every man was speaking their own language and they understood what was being said look at verse 5 and There were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews devout men out of every nation under heaven Now when this was noised abroad the multitude came together and were confounded because that every man heard them speak in his own languages that's case closed right there tongues are Languages and so today if you choose to speak another language, whether it's Spanish or Russian or Japanese or whatever it may be you're speaking in another tongue. It's not gibberish. It's another language other people can understand Now skip down to verse 38. Let's take a look at the Pentecostals favorite verse in the whole Bible, this is there John 3 16 acts 2 38 and And Notice what the Bible says here in verse 38 then Peter said unto them repent Comma and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins And there's another comma there and he shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost So in order to receive that gift the Holy Spirit is not given to you by works Salvation is not given to you by works if you repent of Whatever it is you were trusting in to get you to heaven before and instead place a hundred percent of your faith on Christ Peter is teaching you will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost You have to turn away from trusting in your works You have to turn away from trusting in false gods or anything else now notice It says repent and then there's a comma there and be baptized for the remission of sins That means because of the remission says you should be baptized because your sins have been remitted by Jesus Christ because you're safe believers baptism and Then the gift of the Holy Ghost in this verse directly corresponds There are two commas here separating two different ideas and the gift of the Holy Ghost directly Corresponds to the repentance of the unsaved individual who repents from what they were trusting before to placing their faith on Christ That's what actually 238 is talking about and it's further proof that we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament by faith alone on Jesus Christ now look at verse 39 for the promises unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off Even as many as the Lord our God shall call and with many other words Did he testify and exhort saying save yourselves from this untoward generation? Then they that gladly received his word were baptized and the same day there were added unto them about 3,000 souls that's a pretty good soul winning day right there When we do the mega marathon, thanks brother Brian when we do the the mega marathon I'm thinking of trying to hit this number right here of 3,000 souls think about it 3,000 souls sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise 3,000 souls received that Down payment from God the Father and He will redeem them when Jesus Christ returns on the day of Pentecost We see the indwelling we see also that people were filled with the Spirit. We see the miracle of speaking with tongues as well Now go to Ephesians chapter 1 Ephesians chapter 1 while you do that. I'm going to read from 2nd Corinthians 1 You're going to go to Ephesians chapter 1 I'm gonna read 2nd Corinthians 1 where the Bible says now he which establishes us with you in Christ and hath anointed us as God Who hath also sealed us and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts? So you get the Holy Spirit at salvation and you're sealed forever It's a done deal This is further proof of eternal security because the Holy Spirit cannot go to hell that would be total Nonsense and the Bible talks about how you've received the earnest of the Spirit and the Bible says in John chapter 3 The Father talking about Jesus it says for he whom God hath sent Speaketh the words of God for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him So Jesus was completely full of the Holy Spirit You are given an earnest of the Spirit and now it's your choice whether you want to be full of the Spirit or not But like I've said multiple times already that needle will never hit empty. You'll never completely lose the Holy Ghost It's been given by measure unto you. You have the earnest of the Spirit Look at Ephesians 1 verse 10 Ephesians 1 verse 10 the Bible reads there that in the dispensation of the fullness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ Both which are in heaven and which are on earth even in him in whom also we have obtained an inheritance Being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will That we should be to the praise of his glory who first trusted in Christ in whom he also Trusted after that she heard the word of truth the gospel of your salvation in whom also after that ye believed Ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise and what I'm going to tell you tonight is a simple truth What God has sealed no man can unseal what God has sealed No Man can unseal now people will try as hard as they can to contort and distort the scriptures to try and teach something else But you folks have been sealed with the Holy Spirit And if you go to hell for any reason after salvation then the Holy Spirit's coming with you But that's obviously total nonsense It's not gonna happen verse 14 says which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession Unto the praise of his glory. Not only do you have eternal life as a saved Bible believing Christian Not only do you have the Holy Spirit inside you you have The down payment that has been placed on you by God the Father. It's a down payment It's a promise that one day you will be redeemed and this sinful flesh will go to the ground and you won't have to worry about the conflict and your members between the spirit and the flesh and at the rapture you will be redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ when You're resurrected out of the grave in a perfectly sinless glorified body That's what the Bible is talking about when it says you have been you will you're sealed until the day of redemption The Father purchased you through Jesus Christ Now the question is Why do we have the permanent indwelling in the New Testament? But it's temporary in the Old Testament. I Think we can surmise something about this. Why do we have permanent indwelling in the New Testament? But it's temporary in the Old Testament go to first Kings chapter 8 We have to understand there's a reason for everything in Scripture It's not that New Testament believers are somehow better than Old Testament believers Trust me. We're not better than Abraham. We're not better than Moses We're not better than David because we happen to be born after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ So that's not the answer. It's not that we're just better. That would be prideful, right? There's a very real reason I think we could surmise based on what the Bible says Regarding the temple of God if you go to first Kings chapter 8 Look at verse number 12 This is Solomon speaking about the temple of God He says in verse 12 then spake Solomon the Lord said that he would dwell in the thick darkness I have surely built thee and house to dwell in it's talking to God here. He's blessing the Lord I have surely built thee and house to dwell in a settled place for thee to abide in forever Why was the indwelling temporary in the Old Testament? Why was the anointing temporary in the Old Testament? Why didn't they have the permanent indwelling of the Holy Ghost? Because in the Old Testament God didn't dwell forever Inside people he dwelled with them. He dwelled with them in the tabernacle He dwelled with them in the temple of God Solomon talked about how this temple was built for God to dwell it So in the Old Testament God dwelt with the Israelites He dwelt with people in the tabernacle in the wilderness and later in the temple of God But in the New Testament the Bible says in 1st Corinthians chapter 3 No ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you So in the New Testament, we're the temple the Spirit dwells inside New Testament believers because New Testament believers Are the temple of God we don't have a physical temple of God The next physical temple of God you see spring up in the Middle East is gonna be for the Antichrist It's not gonna be for Jesus It's the Antichrist who at the abomination of desolation will sit in the temple of God and proclaim himself to be God You are the temple the Bible says and so the responsibility the onus is on us as The temple of God to make sure we're not defiling it God hated when that happened in the Old Testament and we shouldn't let that happen to us So I think that's a possible theory as to why in the Old Testament The indwelling was permanent because God dwelled with them in the tabernacle and in the physical temple Whereas in the New Testament we our bodies are the temple of God and God dwells with us forever We're sealed with the Holy Spirit Now go to Ephesians chapter 4 as I move into my final point Ephesians chapter 4 so far. I've said the Holy Spirit is God. I said the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth. I Said the Holy Spirit came upon individuals in the Old Testament. I Said the Holy Spirit permanently indwells people in the New Testament and Now my final point is the Holy Spirit can be grieved or quenched You can quench the power of God in your life if you choose to yield to the flesh look at Ephesians 4 verse 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth But that which is good to the use of edifying that it may minister grace unto the hearers and Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed until the day of Redemption don't grieve the Spirit of God by talking like the heathen By using corrupt communication by cursing up a storm We should speak like Christians and if you're hanging out with people and they can't tell that you're a Christian you're doing something wrong You should be weird to people people should look at you and say hey, you're kind of weird You don't exactly fit in with everybody else here at work. How come you don't go out drinking with us? How come you don't go out to the Hollywood movies with us? How come you don't sit around and play video games with us? How come you're not interested in the same things? We're interested in how come you're not like everybody else and that's because you're a Christian That's because you have the Holy Spirit of God inside you and we shouldn't grieve the spirit by acting like the world When you live in such a way that the average person cannot tell whether or not you believe the Bible You're grieving the Holy Spirit when you watch a bunch of useless reality TV shows And by the way, I know that brother Theo already hit this in the morning talking about the stupidity of pop culture But I want to get in on it too. If you're sitting around watching the these Ridiculous these Mind-numbing these brain cell killing reality television shows all day. You're grieving the Holy Spirit of God They're dumb. You're wasting your time You could be watching some good old-fashioned hard preaching or if you really want to watch movies so bad How about the movies put out by Paul Wittenberg errs framing the world? I think those are pretty good I liked beyond Jordan beyond Jordan is better than anything Hollywood could ever produce But those who would run to Hollywood as Christians and go watch I Know I can't even name a popular move Star Wars I guess People who would go watch Star Wars and and all the rest of it They're grieving the Holy Spirit people who would watch the TV shows Game of Thrones And all this other garbage are grieving the Holy Spirit people who would say well One beer can't possibly hurt. I mean, come on, you know, let's just lighten up a little bit No, you're grieving the Holy Spirit of God and we shouldn't do that. We shouldn't be walking in the flesh There's no excuse for it Now go to first Thessalonians 5 and we'll be done first Thessalonians 5 I'm gonna I'm gonna show you a verse that has four words pretty short First Thessalonians chapter 5 and then we'll be done and We can go have dinner and enjoy the rest of our day first Thessalonians chapter 5 look at verse number 19 the Bible says quench not the Spirit Quench not the Spirit The Holy Spirit is a fire God has lit inside you and if you allow him to work in your life You would be surprised at the things you can accomplish You'd be surprised at the amount of Bible knowledge. You could learn you'd be surprised at What you can add how many people you can go get saved at the preaching you might be able to do at the Opportunities God might give you if you walk in the spirit if you don't quench the spirit You quench a fire and the Holy Spirit is often I should say fire is often used to picture the Holy Spirit and we shouldn't quench the spirit We shouldn't quench the power of God in our life That's why he gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth to help us overcome sin Yes, it's not automatic, but you have the power to make it so that sin does not reign in your life Whether it's an addiction whether it's something you just can't seem to kick God gave you the Holy Ghost to help you overcome it so that you are not a slave to sin So that the flesh doesn't reign over you and win each and every single day But it takes a personal effort on your part to say God's given me the Holy Spirit. He's given me the Holy Ghost I don't want to grieve him. I don't want to quench him I want to do what the Lord has planned for me in my life and live up to my potential and Every single one of you have the potential to do great things for the Lord and the reason why is because you're saved and God's in you so don't quench the Holy Spirit and Don't ruin what could have been a tremendous life lived by you For Christ there are people out there too many people who need who need to be saved and there's too much truth that needs to Be illuminated so quench not the spirit to recap I talked about how this the Holy Spirit is God and we prove that 100% God just like the Father is a hundred percent God and the Son is a hundred percent God I said the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth. You will learn Bible doctrine The Holy Spirit came upon individuals in the Old Testament The Holy Spirit permanently indwells individuals in the New Testament who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ I also surmised why the permanent why the Old Testament Saints didn't have that permanent indwelling and why we do in the New Testament and finally the Holy Spirit can be grieved or Quenched if you're not careful and you walk in the flesh You won't exhibit the fruits of the Spirit and you won't accomplish the good works that have been ordained by God For you to do let's pray Father we thank you for the truth in your word. We pray that you help us to continue to read our Bible and learn more doctrine and take time out of our lives to just sit down with The Holy Spirit and ourselves to learn To learn what you would have for us Help us not to quench the spirit help us not to grieve the Holy Spirit by sinning against you by yielding to the flesh and Lord help us to continue to do work here at Steadfast Baptist Church that would glorify your name in Jesus name I pray amen You
