They've actually been used to build false doctrines, unfortunately. And so we're going to explain some of them here. John chapter 6, we're going to explain the hyperbole of eating Jesus' flesh and drinking his blood. John chapter 6, verse 51, Jesus speaking to the Pharisees and to the Jews, the people there, he said in verse 51, I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves saying, how can this man give us his flesh to eat? And Jesus sentenced them, verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. So here's the funny thing, these people are like, how is he going to give us his flesh to eat? And Jesus doesn't even clarify anything, he just makes it even worse for them, right? He says, look, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed. In other words, food. And my blood is drink indeed. So whoever asked the question initially, you know, they're probably like, what in the world? Are you serious? He that eateth my flesh, he's caking it on now, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, I live by the Father. So he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven, not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead, he that eateth of this bread shall live forever. So what do we see here? We see a very good example of a good hyperbole. Now look, as a saved person, when you read that, you never thought to yourself, oh man, we have to eat Jesus' body. We have to drink his blood. We have to commit spiritual cannibalism in order to have eternal life. That thought never even crosses your mind. As you understand, this is a hyperbole, even if you didn't know that word hyperbole, you understood it was an exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally. Now what is this talking about? Why is he saying this? Why is he telling them you have to eat my flesh, drink my blood? Well go up to verse 26, if you would, verse 26, get some context here. He says in verse 26, Jesus answered them and said, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat the loaves of the loaves and were filled. Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for the meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man shall give unto you, for him hath God the Father seal. Then said they unto him, what shall we do that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, this is the work of God that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. That's the only work you got to do. And this isn't saying that believing is a work. He's just saying like, okay, if you think you got to do a work, well this is the work you have to believe. He says in verse number 30, they said therefore unto him, what signs showest thou then that we may see and believe thee and what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert as it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat. So what is he saying? Show us a miracle because our God showed a miracle to the children of Israel by sending down manna from heaven. So if you claim to be God, if you claim to be who you are, you're gonna perform a miracle that is equal to what the children of Israel saw when God sent forth manna to this world to feed them. So he takes that statement and he just runs with it. Verse 32, then Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven but my father giveth you the true bread from heaven for the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven and giveth life unto the world. They say unto them, Lord, evermore give us this bread. Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall never hunger and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. Now folks, let me ask you a question. After you got saved, did you get hungry again? Of course. After you got saved, did you get thirsty again? Yes, of course. When that happened, did you read this and say, what's the deal? I got saved like 12 hours ago and I'm starving. No, because you understood it was an exaggerated statement that was not meant to be taken literally, right? Because he's saying that he is the bread of life. So just as the manna from heaven was eaten to give the children of Israel life from day to day, in like manner, Jesus Christ was the bread of life who is a far more higher quality spiritual bread is able to satiate the soul of the individual who consumes it. In other words, who believes on Jesus Christ. They will never thirst. They will never need salvation ever again because they already have it. None of us come in here and say, I need salvation. I need that feeling again. I need to be saved again. No, because once we're saved, we're always saved. So he's basically saying when you drink of this and you eat of this, I will satiate that need for salvation and you'll never need it again, which is a perfect verse to explain eternal security. In fact, when you get saved, you never need to get saved again. He says in verse 35, and Jesus said it to him, I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I say unto you that ye also have seen me and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me, and him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out. Skip down to verse 48. I am the bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead. So he's saying this, look, I provided meat for you. I provided bread for you. And this is why you're here, because you want to see the miracle again. But I am the miracle. I'm the bread of life.
