00:00.000 --> 00:07.640
1 Chronicles 3, we continue through these genealogies that take up the first nine chapters

00:07.640 --> 00:10.200
of the book of 1 Chronicles.

00:10.200 --> 00:15.200
This is some pretty heavy reading when you read all nine of these chapters back to back,

00:15.200 --> 00:20.580
but we know that all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine,

00:20.580 --> 00:24.920
for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.

00:24.920 --> 00:27.240
These names have significance.

00:27.240 --> 00:33.680
They all represent stories and events in the lives of real people, and some of them really

00:33.680 --> 00:35.520
do have a message.

00:35.520 --> 00:39.240
You just have to pay attention and look at it a little more closely.

00:39.240 --> 00:42.540
Now, what does it say here in the beginning in verse 1?

00:42.540 --> 00:49.280
Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron, the firstborn Amnon

00:49.280 --> 00:56.840
of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, the second Daniel of Abigail the Carmelitess, the third Absalom,

00:56.840 --> 01:01.160
the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur, the fourth Adonijah the son

01:01.160 --> 01:07.480
of Hagith, the fifth Shepataiah of Abital, the sixth Ithrium by Igla his wife.

01:07.480 --> 01:12.480
Now what's the first thing that you notice here in these first three verses that should

01:12.480 --> 01:20.400
just jump out at you right away is that King David has six sons with six different women,

01:20.400 --> 01:21.440
right?

01:21.440 --> 01:24.400
Because it's telling you, and it's not for no reason.

01:24.400 --> 01:27.760
He could have just told us, all right, he had this son, then he had this son, then he

01:27.760 --> 01:28.760
had this son.

01:28.760 --> 01:32.760
But he gives us the names of the mothers, and then that lets you know right away, hey,

01:32.760 --> 01:38.260
he's having six kids with six different women in the first three verses.

01:38.260 --> 01:43.880
Now if we know something about David, we know that David was a man after God's own heart.

01:43.880 --> 01:45.480
David was a great man of God.

01:45.480 --> 01:47.600
He was a great prophet of God.

01:47.600 --> 01:52.320
He was chosen by God to be the king of Israel.

01:52.320 --> 01:55.040
He was anointed by Samuel the prophet.

01:55.040 --> 01:59.680
He was given great power by God to go out and fight the Lord's battles.

01:59.680 --> 02:02.000
He was definitely filled with the Holy Spirit.

02:02.000 --> 02:05.600
So it's kind of confusing sometimes when we look at people like this and say, well, you

02:05.600 --> 02:11.160
know, if this guy was such a spiritual guy, if he was so godly, if he was so righteous,

02:11.160 --> 02:14.520
then why did he have so many wives?

02:14.520 --> 02:19.200
Why did he do that when God commands us to only have one wife?

02:19.200 --> 02:23.600
And it's pretty clear that God created man and woman in the beginning.

02:23.600 --> 02:29.440
And for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother in Cleveland to his wife, singular,

02:29.440 --> 02:32.320
and they too shall be one flesh.

02:32.320 --> 02:38.880
And the Bible is consistent in teaching that standard from Genesis all the way to the New

02:38.880 --> 02:40.200
Testament.

02:40.200 --> 02:46.400
The Bible never one time teaches that we should practice polygamy or have more than one wife.

02:46.400 --> 02:50.560
The Bible consistently teaches one man and one woman.

02:50.560 --> 02:55.480
So why is it that some of these great men of God had multiple wives and not only that,

02:55.480 --> 02:57.720
but they seem to have gotten away with it?

02:57.720 --> 03:02.000
You know, God doesn't even seem to bat an eye at it.

03:02.000 --> 03:10.040
Well, first of all, if you would flip over to Genesis chapter four, Genesis chapter four.

03:10.040 --> 03:13.840
First of all, let me just give you a logical argument against polygamy because some people

03:13.840 --> 03:19.120
will twist these stories, even though there's no scripture that tells us to practice polygamy.

03:19.120 --> 03:24.680
And on the contrary, there are scriptures that tell us that marriage is between one

03:24.680 --> 03:26.840
man and one woman.

03:26.840 --> 03:31.220
People will try to twist this to say that God wants us to practice polygamy or that

03:31.220 --> 03:35.440
it's okay to practice polygamy, that it's fine to do that.

03:35.440 --> 03:38.440
But let me first start with just the logical argument.

03:38.440 --> 03:45.000
The problem with polygamy, just from a logical standpoint, is that one half of the people

03:45.000 --> 03:50.200
in this world are men and the other half are women.

03:50.200 --> 03:56.760
And in typical towns and states and countries, this is the case because half of the birds

03:56.760 --> 03:59.460
are a boy and half of the birds are a girl.

03:59.460 --> 04:02.760
You pretty much have 50% men and 50% women.

04:02.760 --> 04:08.200
So what in the world sense would it make, you know, unless you're in surf city or whatever,

04:08.200 --> 04:13.160
what in the world sense would it make to have one man with three wives, four wives?

04:13.160 --> 04:15.480
There wouldn't be enough wives to go around.

04:15.480 --> 04:19.940
And here's the thing about that, that if you look at polygamous religions, you know what

04:19.940 --> 04:22.880
they always end up doing 100% of the time?

04:22.880 --> 04:27.720
They end up having the teenage brides and the child brides.

04:27.720 --> 04:33.400
If you go up to Northern Arizona where the fundamentalist Latter-day Saints, the FLDS,

04:33.400 --> 04:39.000
which is a spinoff of the Mormons, where they operate up there with Warren Jeffs and them,

04:39.000 --> 04:43.860
you know, they just keep marrying younger and younger, the bunch of dirty old men up

04:43.860 --> 04:49.520
there with their 17 wives or whatever, but they keep having to go to the teenagers and

04:49.520 --> 04:50.520
the children.

04:50.520 --> 04:55.020
And you notice that Islam does the same thing where they're constantly marrying teenagers

04:55.020 --> 04:56.020
and marrying children.

04:56.020 --> 04:57.020
Why?

04:57.020 --> 04:59.440
Because there just simply aren't going to be enough women to go around.

04:59.480 --> 05:05.440
Which doesn't make any sense because there are half men and half women, so it just works

05:05.440 --> 05:11.060
out that every man has his own wife, as the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 7, and every woman

05:11.060 --> 05:12.480
has her own husband.

05:12.480 --> 05:15.960
So just from that logical standpoint, it doesn't make sense.

05:15.960 --> 05:18.040
What's the first mention of marriage in the Bible?

05:18.040 --> 05:20.800
I already quoted it to you from Genesis 2.

05:20.800 --> 05:25.400
The man and woman, those two are one.

05:25.400 --> 05:28.240
What's the first mention of polygamy in the Bible?

05:28.240 --> 05:31.320
Well, if you look at Genesis 4, verse 19, it says,

05:31.320 --> 05:36.000
And Lamech took unto him two wives.

05:36.000 --> 05:40.840
The name of the one was Ada, and the name of the other, Zillah.

05:40.840 --> 05:45.000
So the first thing we want to realize about the first polygamist in the Bible, or bigamist

05:45.000 --> 05:50.260
really because he only had two, is that he was of the sons of Cain.

05:50.260 --> 05:56.000
This is not of the godly seed of Seth, but this is of the sons of Cain, which is the

05:56.000 --> 05:57.800
bad side of the family.

05:57.800 --> 05:59.600
But not only that, it says in verse 23,

05:59.600 --> 06:04.400
Lamech said unto his wives, Ada and Zillah, Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, hearken

06:04.400 --> 06:08.900
unto my speech, for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

06:08.900 --> 06:14.200
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech's 70th sevenfold.

06:14.200 --> 06:17.400
So here's a guy who ends up killing someone.

06:17.400 --> 06:24.040
So he's not exactly a poster child for righteousness, because he's following the footsteps of Cain

06:24.040 --> 06:29.440
and saying, well, I was even more justified than Cain to kill this guy.

06:29.440 --> 06:36.560
Now we don't know the story of why he killed this guy, but I'm not necessarily buying the

06:36.560 --> 06:42.600
fact that he was justified since he's invoking Cain, and we don't really know the whole story.

06:42.600 --> 06:45.780
We're just getting it from his mouth, coming home and telling his wives, hey, this is what

06:45.780 --> 06:46.780
I did.

06:46.780 --> 06:53.700
And we know that in the next breath, in Genesis 6, the whole earth's filled with violence.

06:53.700 --> 06:56.360
And people are killing each other in Genesis 6.

06:56.360 --> 07:01.460
So we have Cain commit murder, then we have this son of Cain kill someone, and then when

07:01.460 --> 07:04.020
we get to Genesis 6, the whole world's filled with violence.

07:04.020 --> 07:05.500
That's the progression.

07:05.500 --> 07:12.100
So this guy's not exactly a godly example, and so he's the first one that took two wives.

07:12.100 --> 07:15.700
What does the law of Moses have to say about polygamy?

07:15.700 --> 07:20.340
Go if you would to Deuteronomy chapter 17.

07:20.340 --> 07:25.740
Deuteronomy chapter 17, let's get the teachings of the law of Moses on polygamy.

07:25.740 --> 07:26.740
What did it say?

07:26.740 --> 07:32.660
Well, in Deuteronomy chapter 17, it specifically deals with the subject of having a king, which

07:32.660 --> 07:34.900
David was a king.

07:34.900 --> 07:39.620
And the Bible says in Deuteronomy 17, 15, thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee,

07:39.620 --> 07:41.940
whom the Lord thy God shall choose.

07:41.940 --> 07:43.460
That's David, right?

07:43.460 --> 07:46.940
One from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee.

07:46.940 --> 07:51.380
Thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.

07:51.380 --> 07:56.780
But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to

07:56.780 --> 07:58.620
the end that he should multiply horses.

07:58.620 --> 08:03.380
For as much as the Lord hath said unto you, he shall henceforth return no more that way.

08:03.380 --> 08:09.860
Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away, neither shall

08:09.860 --> 08:13.100
he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

08:13.140 --> 08:17.900
So you can multiply silver and gold, but just not greatly multiply silver and gold.

08:17.900 --> 08:22.060
But when it comes to the wives, it just says don't multiply wives.

08:22.060 --> 08:24.180
Don't have multiple wives.

08:24.180 --> 08:25.820
But what did David do?

08:25.820 --> 08:27.660
What did Solomon do?

08:27.660 --> 08:29.160
They multiplied wives, right?

08:29.160 --> 08:31.020
They had a bunch of wives.

08:31.020 --> 08:32.900
What did Solomon's son Rehoboam do?

08:32.900 --> 08:34.420
He had many wives.

08:34.420 --> 08:40.340
And even though he already had a ton of wives, what did he say about Rehoboam?

08:40.340 --> 08:41.580
He desired many wives.

08:41.580 --> 08:43.700
He still wanted more.

08:43.700 --> 08:46.420
Now let's stop and think about David himself.

08:46.420 --> 08:51.140
And if you would flip over to Deuteronomy 21, we look to Deuteronomy 17, look at chapter

08:51.140 --> 08:56.100
21, let me ask you this.

08:56.100 --> 09:00.740
When David had all his multiple wives, was he satisfied with that?

09:00.740 --> 09:01.900
Was that enough for him?

09:01.900 --> 09:06.900
No, because even when he had all these wives and concubines, what did he do?

09:06.900 --> 09:08.860
He still committed adultery.

09:08.860 --> 09:10.960
I mean, it's unbelievable, isn't it?

09:10.960 --> 09:15.800
And when Nathan the prophet rebukes him, he compares him to a guy who already had like

09:15.800 --> 09:21.720
a whole flock of sheep and lambs, but yet he goes and steals his neighbor's one sheep.

09:21.720 --> 09:24.600
You know Uriah the Hittite had one wife.

09:24.600 --> 09:30.160
David had multiple wives, multiple concubines, yet he goes and lies with his neighbor's wife.

09:30.160 --> 09:31.160
It's wicked.

09:31.160 --> 09:34.680
And you know what you should learn from that is that having multiple wives is not going

09:34.680 --> 09:37.240
to satisfy you.

09:37.240 --> 09:42.600
Because that's what people would follow this in order to achieve is like, well, one wife

09:42.600 --> 09:43.600
isn't enough.

09:43.600 --> 09:45.180
I'm not satisfied.

09:45.180 --> 09:49.560
I want to have two wives or three or four or five, right?

09:49.560 --> 09:52.680
Well, are they going to be satisfied?

09:52.680 --> 09:54.280
David wasn't satisfied.

09:54.280 --> 09:55.360
Why?

09:55.360 --> 09:58.940
Because if you're not satisfied with one, you're not going to be satisfied with two

09:58.940 --> 10:04.520
either or three or four or five because there's just the type of people who are content with

10:04.520 --> 10:07.800
such things as they have and then there are type of people that always want something

10:07.800 --> 10:10.160
else and they're not happy with what they have.

10:10.160 --> 10:16.000
You know, Paul said, I've learned in whatsoever state I am there with to be content.

10:16.000 --> 10:19.600
So you learn contentment in whatsoever state you're in.

10:19.600 --> 10:23.340
Not like, well, if I just had a little more than I'll be happy, but I just had a little

10:23.340 --> 10:24.340
more money.

10:24.340 --> 10:28.200
If I, you know, I'm not saying I want to have as many wives as King Solomon.

10:28.200 --> 10:29.600
I just want three.

10:29.600 --> 10:30.600
That's it.

10:30.600 --> 10:31.600
You know?

10:31.600 --> 10:32.600
Well, okay.

10:32.680 --> 10:34.680
If you have three, you know what you're going to want?

10:34.680 --> 10:35.680
The fourth.

10:35.680 --> 10:36.680
Why?

10:36.680 --> 10:41.240
Because the Bible teaches that there are people that are content and there are people who

10:41.240 --> 10:42.800
are covetous.

10:42.800 --> 10:49.360
And so there's a polygamy is not the answer to satisfy man's craving for love and affection

10:49.360 --> 10:54.080
or for that physical relationship because of the fact that even a man after God's own

10:54.080 --> 10:57.420
heart, when he practiced polygamy, it didn't end up satisfying him.

10:57.420 --> 11:02.700
He still committed adultery.

11:02.700 --> 11:06.680
Here's another argument against polygamy in the Bible is that every instance of polygamy

11:06.680 --> 11:09.540
in the Bible goes badly.

11:09.540 --> 11:14.340
There's not a single story in the Bible where polygamy goes well.

11:14.340 --> 11:15.780
It's always bad.

11:15.780 --> 11:16.780
Okay.

11:16.780 --> 11:19.660
And we're going to get to that in the life of David in a moment, but think about some

11:19.660 --> 11:21.920
of the stories of polygamy that we can think of.

11:21.920 --> 11:26.580
You know, when Abraham added on Hagar to Sarah, was that blessed?

11:26.580 --> 11:27.580
Was that good?

11:27.580 --> 11:28.580
No.

11:28.580 --> 11:29.580
It went badly.

11:29.580 --> 11:30.580
They hate each other.

11:30.580 --> 11:31.580
They're at each other's throats.

11:31.580 --> 11:32.580
It's fighting their enemies.

11:32.580 --> 11:36.220
When we think of Jacob having multiple wives, they hated each other.

11:36.220 --> 11:37.220
They're fighting.

11:37.220 --> 11:39.020
It's not a happy family.

11:39.020 --> 11:42.140
You'll never find an instance in the Bible where this is a good thing.

11:42.140 --> 11:43.140
It's blessed.

11:43.140 --> 11:44.140
Everybody's happy.

11:44.140 --> 11:45.140
Everything's great.

11:45.140 --> 11:46.140
Okay.

11:46.140 --> 11:48.560
And right now we're just focusing on the Old Testament's teaching here.

11:48.560 --> 11:50.760
So look at Deuteronomy 21.

11:50.760 --> 11:56.460
The Bible says in Deuteronomy 21 15, if a man have two wives.

11:56.460 --> 12:00.020
Now is this God telling you, go out and get two wives?

12:00.020 --> 12:01.020
Marry two wives.

12:01.020 --> 12:02.460
It's okay to marry two wives.

12:02.460 --> 12:03.460
No.

12:03.460 --> 12:06.220
But he knows that people are going to do it.

12:06.220 --> 12:10.140
Even though it's not his will, it's sort of like when he said, my little children, these

12:10.140 --> 12:13.020
things write unto you that you sin not.

12:13.020 --> 12:18.060
But if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

12:18.060 --> 12:20.940
He's not telling you to go out and sin, but he knows you're going to.

12:20.940 --> 12:22.780
So he says, hey, if you do.

12:22.780 --> 12:28.540
So because this is a society where they have multiple wives, you have to have laws to govern

12:28.540 --> 12:29.540
that.

12:29.540 --> 12:33.100
And God understands that that's a part of their culture.

12:33.100 --> 12:37.300
Obviously if someone's married to two wives and they've sworn an oath to two wives and

12:37.300 --> 12:39.800
married two wives, then they have two wives.

12:39.800 --> 12:41.540
They can't just get rid of them.

12:41.540 --> 12:43.240
You know, those are their wives now.

12:43.240 --> 12:47.220
So they have to continue in that because you know, that's what they, that's the oath that

12:47.220 --> 12:48.220
they made.

12:48.220 --> 12:49.400
That's the vow that they made.

12:49.400 --> 12:53.180
So God is understanding of that and making allowance for that.

12:53.180 --> 12:58.560
It says in Deuteronomy 21 verse 15, if a man have two wives, one beloved and another hated

12:58.560 --> 13:02.500
and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated.

13:02.500 --> 13:05.600
And if the firstborn son be hers that was hated, then it shall be when he maketh his

13:05.600 --> 13:10.840
sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn

13:10.840 --> 13:14.220
before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn.

13:14.220 --> 13:18.820
But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn by giving him a double portion

13:18.840 --> 13:23.740
of all that he hath, for he is the beginning of his strength, the right of the firstborn

13:23.740 --> 13:25.080
is his.

13:25.080 --> 13:28.220
Go to Exodus 21.

13:28.220 --> 13:33.900
Exodus chapter 21.

13:33.900 --> 13:38.780
Exodus chapter 21 and the Bible reads in verse number seven, and if a man sell his daughter

13:38.780 --> 13:43.060
to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the men servants do.

13:43.060 --> 13:48.060
If she please not her master who had betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed

13:48.100 --> 13:52.500
to sell her unto a strange nation, he shall not have no power, seeing he had dealt deceitfully

13:52.500 --> 13:53.500
with her.

13:53.500 --> 13:56.860
And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of

13:56.860 --> 13:57.940
daughters.

13:57.940 --> 14:03.340
If he take him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage shall he

14:03.340 --> 14:04.900
not diminish.

14:04.900 --> 14:09.980
And if he do not these three unto her, then she shall go out free without money.

14:09.980 --> 14:16.940
So here, the Bible is again just saying if he takes a second wife, this is the law governing

14:16.940 --> 14:17.940
that.

14:17.940 --> 14:22.780
I'm not telling him, go ahead and do it, it's fine, it's my will, it's of God, and anything

14:22.780 --> 14:24.580
like that.

14:24.580 --> 14:28.740
Let's quickly, if you would, turn to First Timothy, chapter three, and while you're turning

14:28.740 --> 14:29.740
there, we'll go to the New Testament.

14:29.740 --> 14:33.820
While you're turning there, let me just give you some other examples of polygamy in the

14:33.820 --> 14:36.900
Bible, and let's see if these are blessed.

14:36.900 --> 14:43.340
Gideon was one who had a lot of wives, and Gideon had 70 sons.

14:43.340 --> 14:47.060
And you know, part of the reason why these guys would want to have a lot of wives, it

14:47.060 --> 14:51.140
wasn't just to gratify the flesh, but it was also because they wanted to have a lot

14:51.140 --> 14:52.740
of sons.

14:52.740 --> 14:56.220
They wanted to reproduce, they wanted to have children that would carry on the family name

14:56.220 --> 14:59.680
and the lineage, and because having children is a blessing.

14:59.680 --> 15:03.260
But again, we shouldn't go overboard on that.

15:03.260 --> 15:07.620
I'm going as far with that as I can with one wife.

15:07.620 --> 15:12.980
I've got 10 kids so far, and God willing, we'll be able to have a few more, or maybe

15:12.980 --> 15:15.420
even many more, right honey?

15:15.420 --> 15:17.180
Keep it rolling, keep it rolling.

15:17.180 --> 15:21.640
So the thing about that is though, I have 10 children, but it's all with one woman.

15:21.640 --> 15:26.180
That's what God gave me legitimately, what he blessed me with, saying, well I want to

15:26.180 --> 15:31.020
have 20 kids, 30 kids, 40 kids, so I'm going to multiply wives.

15:31.020 --> 15:34.260
Jerubel or Gideon was one who did that.

15:34.260 --> 15:38.460
He had 70 sons, and I'll bet you he was pretty proud of his 70 sons, right?

15:38.460 --> 15:41.060
But you know what happened to those 70 sons?

15:41.060 --> 15:43.340
They got wiped out, they got killed.

15:43.340 --> 15:47.180
They had this one evil brother who ended up slaughtering them all.

15:47.180 --> 15:49.500
He was afraid that they would try to take the lead.

15:49.500 --> 15:51.180
He wanted to become king.

15:51.180 --> 15:54.880
So Abimelech slew his 70 brethren.

15:54.880 --> 15:57.980
So Gideon's probably thinking, oh man, we're really going to carry on the family line here

15:57.980 --> 15:59.220
with these 70 sons.

15:59.220 --> 16:00.220
They all get wiped out.

16:00.220 --> 16:04.500
You know, David, in the scripture that we read in 1 Chronicles 3 where it's listing

16:04.500 --> 16:08.400
the sons with different women, well what were some of those sons that he had that he's so

16:08.400 --> 16:09.760
proud of?

16:09.760 --> 16:10.760
Firstborn Amnon.

16:10.760 --> 16:13.300
How did things work out for Amnon?

16:13.300 --> 16:15.620
If you know the story, he got killed.

16:15.620 --> 16:18.680
Well, but then there was Absalom.

16:18.680 --> 16:20.260
How did things go for him?

16:20.260 --> 16:22.100
He got killed, right?

16:22.100 --> 16:25.340
And of course, the infant son was killed, right?

16:25.340 --> 16:31.220
So I mean, these guys aren't being blessed when they have all these multiple wives and

16:31.220 --> 16:32.220
multiple children.

16:32.220 --> 16:37.820
It's just problems, you know, when they don't do things God's way.

16:37.820 --> 16:44.500
Now a lot of people's attitude toward this is, well, you know, okay, maybe having one

16:44.500 --> 16:48.500
wife is better, but God's okay with polygamy.

16:48.500 --> 16:50.420
God's okay with having multiple wives.

16:50.420 --> 16:51.460
But here's the thing.

16:51.460 --> 16:54.900
Even by that logic, shouldn't we want what's best in our lives?

16:54.900 --> 16:58.380
Shouldn't we want God's perfect will for our lives instead of just trying to figure out,

16:58.380 --> 17:00.900
well, what can we get away with?

17:00.900 --> 17:01.900
You know what I mean?

17:01.900 --> 17:05.260
Like what's the minimum godliness that we can hold to?

17:05.460 --> 17:09.380
Now, you know, we should be seeking what God wants us to do with our lives, not just what

17:09.380 --> 17:15.460
God kind of lets go or is okay with or is kind of lenient about.

17:15.460 --> 17:20.620
We should seek to do that which is God's perfect will and plan for our life.

17:20.620 --> 17:26.220
Now in 1 Timothy 3, there are the qualifications for the pastor of the church, the bishop,

17:26.220 --> 17:29.500
and also the deacon has the same qualifications.

17:29.500 --> 17:37.220
And he says, a bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober,

17:37.220 --> 17:39.620
of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach.

17:39.620 --> 17:43.180
So the pastor must be the husband of one wife.

17:43.180 --> 17:46.940
So a lot of people will say, well, the pastor can only have one wife, but other people in

17:46.940 --> 17:48.340
the church, but hold on a second.

17:48.340 --> 17:54.180
Why would God have different rules for the pastor as for the layman?

17:54.180 --> 17:56.380
I mean, there's right and wrong.

17:56.380 --> 18:00.380
It's not that God has different rules for the pastor and the deacon.

18:00.380 --> 18:03.940
It's that the pastor and deacon just have to live up to that standard in order to be

18:03.940 --> 18:06.100
qualified for that position.

18:06.100 --> 18:08.180
Now think about how silly this would be.

18:08.180 --> 18:12.460
If laymen were allowed to have two wives, and pastors and deacons are supposed to have

18:12.460 --> 18:17.980
one, how are you going to find pastors and deacons if they've already married two wives,

18:17.980 --> 18:22.620
once they have them, they can't just downgrade, like, see you, honey, you're out of here.

18:22.620 --> 18:25.380
I mean, once they've married two, they have two.

18:25.380 --> 18:29.100
So then it would be like, okay, well then how can this guy ever be a pastor or ever

18:29.100 --> 18:30.100
be a deacon?

18:30.100 --> 18:35.280
You know what God's saying is, monogamy is right.

18:35.280 --> 18:38.060
One man, one woman is what's right.

18:38.060 --> 18:39.300
That's God's plan.

18:39.300 --> 18:40.480
That's God's will.

18:40.480 --> 18:45.420
And people will go outside of that and have two, three, four wives, you know, don't pick

18:45.420 --> 18:47.100
them to be the pastor.

18:47.100 --> 18:49.540
Pick someone who's more godly.

18:49.540 --> 18:51.220
Don't pick them to be the deacon.

18:51.220 --> 18:52.740
Pick someone who's more godly.

18:52.740 --> 18:55.020
See, we should all be godly.

18:55.060 --> 18:57.700
We should all be following the rules that God has laid out.

18:57.700 --> 19:02.340
We should all be seeking God's will for our life, and then among those people that are

19:02.340 --> 19:08.640
living for God, we pick certain people and make them the pastor, make them the deacon.

19:08.640 --> 19:12.340
But we should all be striving to meet these standards.

19:12.340 --> 19:15.820
I mean, are any of these standards only for pastors?

19:15.820 --> 19:22.140
I mean, does that, hey, you know, the pastor's to be sober, but everybody else, drink up.

19:22.180 --> 19:26.820
You know, the pastor's to be given to hospitality, but everybody else, you know, shut and bar

19:26.820 --> 19:30.860
the door because, you know, it's us four no more.

19:30.860 --> 19:35.180
You know, the pastor's supposed to be blameless and have a good reputation, but you should

19:35.180 --> 19:38.100
just go out and just soil your reputation because you're not going to be a pastor anyway.

19:38.100 --> 19:40.080
I mean, isn't that kind of silly?

19:40.080 --> 19:43.860
If we look at the rest of the qualifications, it's pretty obvious that God doesn't want

19:43.860 --> 19:46.060
anybody to be a brawler.

19:46.060 --> 19:53.020
God doesn't want anybody to be soon angry or a striker or greedy or any of these things,

19:53.020 --> 19:58.220
but he's just saying, you know, you pick people that meet this standard to be a pastor, but

19:58.220 --> 20:04.060
everybody should be striving for godliness in their life, and part of that includes having

20:04.060 --> 20:06.700
only one wife because that's God's will.

20:06.700 --> 20:08.420
That's God's plan for us.

20:11.660 --> 20:13.100
Titus says the same thing.

20:13.100 --> 20:17.980
You don't have to turn there, but Titus chapter 1 verse 6 says, if any be blameless, the husband

20:17.980 --> 20:24.500
of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot or unruly, again, that's the

20:24.500 --> 20:26.580
qualification for the pastor.

20:26.580 --> 20:32.360
First Corinthians 7, I already quoted it earlier, but the Bible says that to avoid fornication,

20:32.360 --> 20:41.680
let every man have his own wife, singular, and let every woman have her own husband, singular.

20:41.680 --> 20:44.960
So let's go back to First Chronicles chapter 3 now with that in mind.

20:44.960 --> 20:51.800
First Chronicles chapter 3, and while you're turning there, let's go to Second Samuel chapter

20:51.800 --> 20:58.800
12, so keep your finger in First Chronicles 3 and look at Second Samuel chapter 12.

20:58.800 --> 21:03.760
Now Second Samuel is a passage that's parallel with First Chronicles.

21:03.760 --> 21:11.120
They both have to do with the life of David, and as I preach this subject tonight about

21:11.120 --> 21:18.200
having a multiplicity of wives, I want to be honest as I preach the Bible tonight and

21:18.200 --> 21:22.480
show you all the scriptures, because some people, it's like they have a certain agenda,

21:22.480 --> 21:26.400
they have a certain belief, they have a certain doctrine, and that's all they want to show

21:26.400 --> 21:31.360
you is only verses that support their view.

21:31.360 --> 21:35.060
But we should look at all the scripture and get a complete picture of what God teaches

21:35.060 --> 21:36.060
on the subject.

21:36.060 --> 21:39.960
We don't want to be dishonest and say like, here's what the Bible says, period, end of

21:39.960 --> 21:42.440
the story and not show you everything.

21:42.440 --> 21:46.600
Too many preachers are guilty of turning the same scriptures over and over again and then

21:46.600 --> 21:48.660
neglecting other scriptures.

21:48.660 --> 21:53.120
That's why I showed you the verses in the Old Testament where God said, hey, here's

21:53.120 --> 21:55.680
what you do in a situation if a man have two wives.

21:55.680 --> 22:00.760
I'm not trying to hide those verses because we want to comprehend and understand the totality

22:00.760 --> 22:06.520
of the Bible's teaching, not just verses that only support our position that say one man,

22:06.520 --> 22:07.520
one woman.

22:07.720 --> 22:13.440
Let's look at all the evidence, because there are certain verses that people would use that

22:13.440 --> 22:17.360
could indicate that God is for polygamy.

22:17.360 --> 22:19.880
And I showed you some of them in the Mosaic Law.

22:19.880 --> 22:25.280
Here's another verse that comes up on this subject about David himself, so it's very

22:25.280 --> 22:27.840
relevant to the topic tonight.

22:27.840 --> 22:31.400
And again, I'm just trying to show you all the evidence here so that you can understand

22:31.400 --> 22:33.660
the totality of the Bible's teaching here.

22:33.660 --> 22:37.960
Look at 2 Samuel 12, verse 7.

22:37.960 --> 22:42.580
And Nathan said to David, thou art the man, thus saith the Lord God of Israel.

22:42.580 --> 22:46.820
I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul.

22:46.820 --> 22:49.420
And this is the part where people get tripped up here.

22:49.420 --> 22:55.380
And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee

22:55.380 --> 22:57.300
the house of Israel and of Judah.

22:57.300 --> 23:01.780
And if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

23:01.780 --> 23:06.460
Therefore, as thou despised the commandment of the Lord to do evil in his sight, thou

23:06.460 --> 23:11.700
hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and

23:11.700 --> 23:18.020
hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

23:18.020 --> 23:25.000
So the argument from this verse would be, well, if God is the one who gave these wives

23:25.000 --> 23:31.500
to David, he gave Saul's wives unto David, then that means that that must be something

23:31.500 --> 23:35.220
good, because God would only give someone something good.

23:35.220 --> 23:40.940
This is their logic, if they would take this to say, see, the Bible's for polygamy.

23:40.940 --> 23:42.620
But that's really not what this verse is saying.

23:42.620 --> 23:47.820
What this verse is actually stating is just the fact of what happened.

23:47.820 --> 23:54.740
By God removing Saul from king and putting David in that spot, you know, David basically

23:54.740 --> 23:58.860
inherits everything associated with that position.

23:58.860 --> 24:03.740
And he inherited the wives that Saul had.

24:03.740 --> 24:06.340
He inherited that from Saul.

24:06.340 --> 24:10.320
God didn't just say, hey, David, let me give you a second wife, buddy.

24:10.320 --> 24:12.260
Let me give you a fifth wife.

24:12.260 --> 24:14.180
I don't think 11 wives is enough.

24:14.180 --> 24:16.260
Let me give you a 12th.

24:16.260 --> 24:17.260
That's not what God did here.

24:17.260 --> 24:22.740
What this is actually saying is that God took the kingdom away from Saul and gave it to

24:22.740 --> 24:23.740
David.

24:23.740 --> 24:26.440
And by doing that, there are things that went along with that.

24:26.440 --> 24:32.120
And what God's really trying to drive in here is that, you know, you were given these other

24:32.120 --> 24:37.240
wives and yet you still went after someone else's wife, even though you had all these

24:37.240 --> 24:41.200
wives that you got from Saul.

24:41.200 --> 24:45.880
You know, I gave you the kingdom of Saul, I gave you all these great things, and I gave

24:45.880 --> 24:48.120
into your hands Saul's wives.

24:48.120 --> 24:49.120
And that's not enough for you.

24:49.120 --> 24:50.700
You want something else.

24:50.700 --> 24:53.740
That's actually the context of what's being stated here.

24:53.740 --> 24:59.940
Now you say, but still, Pastor Anderson, you know, it says, I gave thee thy master's

24:59.940 --> 25:02.380
house and thy master's wives and thy bosom.

25:02.380 --> 25:04.060
He gave him the house.

25:04.060 --> 25:07.780
And what goes along with that is the wives and the bosom, because that's kind of like

25:07.780 --> 25:09.820
part of the showcase there.

25:09.820 --> 25:13.580
You know, you get that kingdom, you get everything that goes with it.

25:13.580 --> 25:19.180
But what we do see here from this verse and many other verses that talk about the kings

25:19.180 --> 25:24.920
of Judah and the kings of Israel, I will give you this, that in the Old Testament,

25:24.920 --> 25:33.500
God did overlook or put up with, you know, and you could use the word allow polygamy,

25:33.500 --> 25:38.380
but he didn't allow it in the sense of saying it's right, it's okay.

25:38.380 --> 25:41.140
It's always been a sin.

25:41.140 --> 25:46.840
But what God did do is he basically gave allowance for it, basically just understanding this

25:46.840 --> 25:48.640
is something that happens.

25:48.640 --> 25:50.480
This is something that's going to go on.

25:50.480 --> 25:53.600
And he didn't basically freak out about it.

25:53.600 --> 25:54.800
But he kind of let it go.

25:54.800 --> 25:57.040
He let it slide.

25:57.040 --> 25:58.380
So it would be like this.

25:58.380 --> 26:06.440
Let's say I have a job and at the job they have a rule, tuck in your shirt.

26:06.440 --> 26:09.760
But let's say the rule is not enforced at all.

26:09.760 --> 26:14.400
And I remember a job that I had when I was 18 years old where they had a rule, tuck in

26:14.400 --> 26:17.240
your shirt, nobody tucked in their shirt.

26:17.240 --> 26:18.240
Because it wasn't enforced.

26:18.240 --> 26:20.320
So I mean just nobody's tucked in their shirt.

26:20.320 --> 26:25.360
Well I walked in there and I always had my shirt tucked in because I read the rules and

26:25.360 --> 26:29.320
it was written down in the rules and even though nobody talked about it, it technically

26:29.320 --> 26:34.400
said tuck in your shirt and I wanted to follow the rules.

26:34.400 --> 26:36.240
So I had my shirt tucked in.

26:36.240 --> 26:40.840
And the owner of the company took me aside and he said, hey, you know, I like the fact

26:40.840 --> 26:43.160
that you tuck in your shirt.

26:44.000 --> 26:46.920
And he gave me a raise.

26:46.920 --> 26:48.120
So he liked that.

26:48.120 --> 26:53.240
But that's kind of what was going on in the Old Testament, I believe.

26:53.240 --> 26:57.240
Is that the rule was always to tuck in your shirt.

26:57.240 --> 27:00.040
But it's just God's choosing his battles with people.

27:00.040 --> 27:03.360
He's just trying to get them to at least not commit, just don't commit adultery.

27:03.360 --> 27:05.120
Just at least don't commit murder.

27:05.120 --> 27:07.640
Just at least just worship the one true God.

27:07.640 --> 27:09.880
Just don't bring in false gods.

27:09.880 --> 27:14.000
He had a lower standard in the Old Testament.

27:14.000 --> 27:20.800
I think that's pretty obvious from Genesis to Malachi that God had a lower standard in

27:20.800 --> 27:21.800
the Old Testament.

27:21.800 --> 27:23.280
The rules are the same.

27:23.280 --> 27:24.280
Right has been right.

27:24.280 --> 27:25.280
Wrong has been wrong.

27:25.280 --> 27:26.840
Obviously there are ceremonial rules that change.

27:26.840 --> 27:31.520
But I'm saying in general, the rules of right and wrong, the morality is the same.

27:31.520 --> 27:36.600
It's just in the Old Testament, he wasn't cracking down on it as much as he does in

27:36.600 --> 27:37.600
the New Testament.

27:37.600 --> 27:41.640
In the New Testament, man, he gets specific and gives you stricter rules.

27:41.640 --> 27:47.040
And this is what's so dumb about these neo-evangelicals who think that God softened up in the New

27:47.040 --> 27:48.040
Testament.

27:48.040 --> 27:49.040
It's the opposite.

27:49.040 --> 27:53.200
I mean, I read the Old Testament, I'm thinking, man, he was pretty lenient back then.

27:53.200 --> 27:56.400
You could get away with a lot back then.

27:56.400 --> 27:59.920
Just as long as you just worship the true God and just do a few basic things, it wasn't

27:59.920 --> 28:00.920
a big deal.

28:00.920 --> 28:06.180
You know, in the New Testament, you know, God's really coming down on people.

28:06.180 --> 28:09.260
And you say, yeah, but in the Old Testament, God would just kill somebody.

28:09.260 --> 28:13.300
Well, have you ever read the story of Ananias and Sapphira?

28:13.300 --> 28:14.300
That's the New Testament.

28:14.300 --> 28:16.380
Oh, man, but what about the plagues in the Old Testament?

28:16.380 --> 28:17.380
What about the flood?

28:17.380 --> 28:19.900
Well, you ever read the book of Revelation?

28:19.900 --> 28:24.900
I mean, in Revelation, he's wiping out more people than he ever wiped out in the Old Testament.

28:24.900 --> 28:28.980
You could take all the people God wiped out in the entire Old Testament, he wipes out

28:28.980 --> 28:32.860
way more in Revelation because the population of the earth is so much greater.

28:32.860 --> 28:36.420
He's wiping out billions of people in the end times.

28:36.420 --> 28:42.700
And so it's not that God got soft in the New Testament, it's that God got more strict in

28:42.700 --> 28:44.060
the New Testament.

28:44.060 --> 28:49.780
So I believe that in the Old Testament, he turned a blind eye to a lot of things, including

28:49.780 --> 28:51.220
polygamy.

28:51.220 --> 28:56.180
It's not that he was okay with it, it's just that it wasn't the biggest battle that he

28:56.180 --> 28:57.620
was fighting with people.

28:57.620 --> 29:01.680
So he kind of just let it slide even though it wasn't right.

29:01.680 --> 29:04.360
There were a lot of other things in the Old Testament that he let slide.

29:04.360 --> 29:07.940
He made it clear to them that he didn't want them worshiping in the high places.

29:07.940 --> 29:09.580
He didn't want them worshiping in the groves.

29:09.580 --> 29:11.400
But there were kings who did what?

29:11.400 --> 29:14.600
They worshiped the true God, but they did it in the groves.

29:14.600 --> 29:16.120
They did it in the high places.

29:16.120 --> 29:21.060
And the Bible says, but nevertheless, his heart was perfect with the Lord as God.

29:21.060 --> 29:27.240
Even though he had this one problem where he worshiped God in the wrong location, God's

29:27.240 --> 29:30.200
just happy at least that he's worshiping the true God.

29:30.200 --> 29:31.800
And at least he's a good guy.

29:31.800 --> 29:33.760
At least he's doing a lot of good things.

29:33.760 --> 29:38.960
So God doesn't just throw us in the trash or write us off because we have one thing

29:38.960 --> 29:40.720
wrong in our life.

29:40.720 --> 29:44.640
If we have one thing wrong in our life, we don't just get trashed.

29:44.640 --> 29:50.640
So God would take people that had some things wrong in their life and still use them and

29:50.640 --> 29:52.100
be able to turn a blind eye.

29:52.100 --> 29:56.300
But I want to warn you, he's stricter in the New Testament.

29:56.520 --> 30:00.900
Make the New Testament your primary study on how he wants you to live your life because

30:00.900 --> 30:03.020
he tightens things up more in the New Testament.

30:03.020 --> 30:04.020
Why is that?

30:04.020 --> 30:07.820
Because unto whom much is given, of him shall much be required.

30:07.820 --> 30:09.500
We have the entire Bible.

30:09.500 --> 30:11.400
We have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

30:11.400 --> 30:13.900
He expects more out of us.

30:13.900 --> 30:17.980
It's like you'd expect more from someone who grew up in a Christian home than a worldly

30:17.980 --> 30:21.680
teenager that's at the public school.

30:21.680 --> 30:27.180
You wouldn't expect as much as the one who's been taught the Bible from the time he was

30:27.180 --> 30:29.920
a little child.

30:29.920 --> 30:31.620
So it's the same thing here.

30:31.620 --> 30:37.420
In the New Testament, we have a lot more going for us, positively.

30:37.420 --> 30:41.220
So God expects more from us in the New Testament.

30:41.220 --> 30:44.200
So don't say, well, polygamy is not a big deal.

30:44.200 --> 30:49.640
I'm just going to move to some other country and just get a second wife and whatever.

30:49.760 --> 30:52.840
First of all, you're just asking for a headache.

30:52.840 --> 30:55.340
It's not going to be as cool as you think.

30:55.340 --> 30:59.240
It sounds cool on the surface on certain levels, but it's not cool when you read about it in

30:59.240 --> 31:00.600
the Bible.

31:00.600 --> 31:03.720
So don't lean under your own understanding.

31:03.720 --> 31:07.300
God's plan for you is always going to be the best plan for you.

31:07.300 --> 31:09.280
So don't look for something else.

31:09.280 --> 31:12.260
And don't settle for the second best or the third best.

31:12.260 --> 31:16.820
Live God's perfect will for your life is that you have one wife and that you stay faithful

31:16.820 --> 31:18.680
to that wife until the end.

31:18.680 --> 31:22.080
Now there are some sins where God will throw you in the trash, as it were.

31:22.080 --> 31:25.200
I mean, there were guys in the Old Testament where they committed certain sins where he

31:25.200 --> 31:26.640
does wipe them out.

31:26.640 --> 31:29.480
Or they start worshipping other gods.

31:29.480 --> 31:35.080
And you know, when David committed adultery, that was a major deal breaker for him.

31:35.080 --> 31:39.880
He didn't get completely thrown in the trash because he repented, but he ended up losing

31:39.880 --> 31:41.800
the kingdom for a little while.

31:41.800 --> 31:45.760
And he ended up having it split from his sons.

31:45.760 --> 31:48.540
And he ended up having four of his children die.

31:48.540 --> 31:53.340
So if four of his children die, that's a pretty serious punishment.

31:53.340 --> 31:55.540
So you know, he didn't get away with that.

31:55.540 --> 31:59.700
So God did let a lot of these kings get away with polygamy, but he didn't let them get

31:59.700 --> 32:01.500
away with adultery.

32:01.500 --> 32:03.260
He didn't let them get away with murder.

32:03.260 --> 32:05.700
You know, when they did those things, they suffered.

32:05.700 --> 32:11.500
And I believe that adultery and murder are worse than polygamy for that reason.

32:11.500 --> 32:15.060
You know, polygamy is bad, but it's not the worst thing ever.

32:15.060 --> 32:16.560
There are a lot of other worse things.

32:16.560 --> 32:21.140
And in fact, today in our society, polygamy is illegal.

32:21.140 --> 32:26.320
And people have a really low view of polygamy, which they should, because it is bad.

32:26.320 --> 32:32.300
And even atheists and people that are just agnostic or just worldly people, even though

32:32.300 --> 32:36.960
condemn polygamy and say, hey, this isn't right toward women.

32:36.960 --> 32:41.740
And I agree with them, because it is pretty insensitive or unloving to your wife to take

32:41.740 --> 32:43.520
on a second wife or third wife.

32:43.520 --> 32:45.000
So they're right about that.

32:45.000 --> 32:52.920
But these same people don't bat an eye if you divorce your wife and marry someone else.

32:52.920 --> 32:57.780
Like to them, polygamy, oh, that's just the worst thing ever, having two wives at once.

32:57.780 --> 33:02.440
But to them, it's fine to have three in a row, just so long as they're not at the same

33:02.440 --> 33:03.440
time.

33:03.440 --> 33:05.420
But you know what, though?

33:05.420 --> 33:12.800
I think in many ways, and you know, people might get mad about this, but I believe that

33:12.800 --> 33:18.280
divorcing your wife and marrying someone else is worse than polygamy.

33:18.280 --> 33:22.920
Because at least with polygamy, at least you stayed with your vows that you made to two

33:22.920 --> 33:23.920
people.

33:23.920 --> 33:26.360
Now, you should have never made that vow to two people and still only be made to one.

33:26.360 --> 33:28.880
But at least you kept supporting and taking care of both.

33:28.880 --> 33:32.760
You didn't just forsake one and leave one high and dry, which is what a lot of people

33:32.760 --> 33:35.480
are doing when they divorce their spouse, leave their spouse.

33:35.480 --> 33:37.760
So I mean, in many ways, divorce is worse than polygamy.

33:37.760 --> 33:42.780
See, we have our ideas, don't we, about how bad things are and what's worse and what's

33:42.780 --> 33:44.860
better.

33:44.860 --> 33:46.100
You know, but here's the thing.

33:46.100 --> 33:47.100
God's got a different idea.

33:47.100 --> 33:51.860
You know, the Bible never says that having a second wife is adultery.

33:51.860 --> 33:55.580
But he did say that divorcing someone and marrying someone else is adultery.

33:55.580 --> 33:59.040
He said if you divorce your wife and marry another, you're committing adultery.

33:59.040 --> 34:02.740
But did he say, hey, you take on a second wife, you just committed adultery?

34:02.740 --> 34:03.740
No.

34:03.740 --> 34:05.380
Now, having a second wife is sin.

34:05.380 --> 34:07.440
And I made that crystal clear.

34:07.440 --> 34:11.660
From Genesis to Revelation, it is not right to have a second wife.

34:11.660 --> 34:13.700
It has always been sin.

34:13.700 --> 34:16.500
It has always been wrong.

34:16.500 --> 34:19.380
But there are worse sins in the Bible.

34:19.380 --> 34:23.280
Which is why when you read the Old Testament, it can seem like God's lenient toward this.

34:23.280 --> 34:26.260
It's just because God's lenient on a lot of things in the Old Testament.

34:26.260 --> 34:28.220
He tightens things up more in the New Testament.

34:28.220 --> 34:33.540
But even now, even in 2018, isn't God sometimes lenient with us when we do stupid things?

34:33.540 --> 34:36.780
I mean, do you want God to crack down on every single sin that you commit?

34:36.780 --> 34:41.740
I'm glad that God has grace with us and is lenient with us.

34:41.740 --> 34:44.860
I don't think he's going to be lenient on polygamy.

34:44.860 --> 34:47.740
Especially if you're growing up in the United States in 2018.

34:47.740 --> 34:51.460
I think if you go out and try this, he's going to come down on you like a ton of bricks.

34:51.460 --> 34:54.060
That's what I believe.

34:54.060 --> 34:56.580
But you can't just ignore the Old Testament scripture.

34:56.580 --> 35:01.540
You've got to take it all and grasp it all and learn it all and believe it all.

35:01.540 --> 35:05.140
And so we don't want to shy away from scriptures that make us uncomfortable.

35:05.140 --> 35:08.500
We need to read them, study them, learn them, understand them.

35:08.500 --> 35:10.940
Because God wants to teach us.

35:10.940 --> 35:14.080
And all scripture is profitable for doctrine.

35:14.080 --> 35:15.080
All of it.

35:15.080 --> 35:19.580
Including 2 Samuel 12-8 or any other verse that might make us uncomfortable because it

35:19.580 --> 35:22.540
goes against what the rest of the Bible teaches.

35:22.540 --> 35:25.620
Well, it's just that we're not understanding it properly.

35:25.620 --> 35:30.360
So we've got to bring it all into harmony.

35:30.360 --> 35:32.200
Because the Bible does harmonize.

35:32.200 --> 35:37.160
When there seems to be a contradiction, it's just that we're not understanding things right.

35:37.160 --> 35:41.380
There are so many things that seem to clash in the Bible for me until I get rid of my

35:41.380 --> 35:44.160
wrong idea and then it all comes into focus.

35:44.160 --> 35:46.320
Like, oh, okay, now I see what's saying here.

35:46.320 --> 35:47.400
And then it makes sense.

35:47.400 --> 35:51.180
Let's go back to 1 Chronicles 3 to finish up.

35:51.180 --> 35:57.420
I don't really have a whole lot to say tonight about this chapter because the main thing

35:57.420 --> 36:00.220
that it's about is about the sons of David.

36:00.240 --> 36:05.040
Chapter 1 was all about, you know, all of mankind's lineage and all of the nations,

36:05.040 --> 36:07.880
where they came from, all the way up to Israel.

36:07.880 --> 36:13.100
Chapter 2 was all about the sons of Judah taking us up to King David and his line.

36:13.100 --> 36:15.140
And then now in chapter 3 we're looking at the sons of David.

36:15.140 --> 36:18.920
We saw his six different sons with six different women.

36:18.920 --> 36:22.920
These six, verse 4, were born unto him in Hebron and there he reigned seven years and

36:22.920 --> 36:24.200
six months.

36:24.200 --> 36:26.620
And in Jerusalem he reigned 30 and three years.

36:26.780 --> 36:32.040
These were born unto him in Jerusalem, Shemaiah, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four

36:32.040 --> 36:40.000
of Bathsheba, the daughter of Amiel, Ibar also, and Elishama, and Eliphelet, and Nogah,

36:40.000 --> 36:45.020
and Nephag, and Jephiah, and Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine.

36:45.020 --> 36:49.460
These were all the sons of David, well, besides the sons of the concubines.

36:49.460 --> 36:52.540
So I mean these are just only the sons that he had with his wives.

36:52.540 --> 36:53.540
Who are the concubines?

36:54.300 --> 37:00.500
These are the women that he's procreating with and sleeping with and they are exclusive

37:00.500 --> 37:05.420
to him, so they're not just women that he's just fooling around with, but these are actually

37:05.420 --> 37:11.700
women that belong to him but they're of a lower status, so he's not going to marry them

37:11.700 --> 37:16.540
as his wife because the women that he marries as his wife, they're of a higher status.

37:16.540 --> 37:22.060
So these are like a second-class wife in that sense or just the one that he sleeps with

37:22.220 --> 37:28.980
that's not even his wife, but it's just considered his women, this is part of his harem.

37:28.980 --> 37:36.700
And again, this is completely wrong and it led to nothing but problems for him.

37:36.700 --> 37:40.740
And everyone who did it in the Old Testament, say, why did he do it if he's such a good

37:40.740 --> 37:41.740
guy?

37:41.740 --> 37:42.740
Why did he do these things?

37:42.740 --> 37:45.900
Well, you know, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

37:45.900 --> 37:51.180
I mean, men have weaknesses and temptations and especially when they're in that position

37:51.180 --> 37:57.820
of power, you know, you don't think this is going on right now in the White House or

37:57.820 --> 37:58.820
whatever?

37:58.820 --> 38:06.780
I mean, I don't think Trump would ever do anything like that, you know.

38:06.780 --> 38:11.700
But how about, you know, a guy whose name starts with a B and ends in ill Clinton, but

38:11.700 --> 38:12.700
you know what?

38:12.700 --> 38:15.820
I guarantee you the Republicans are doing it too.

38:15.820 --> 38:22.180
I mean, you know, think about Trump's background and the stuff that he said and the life that

38:22.180 --> 38:23.180
he's lived.

38:23.180 --> 38:25.140
You think he'd be above this?

38:25.140 --> 38:30.500
I mean, if he could get by with this publicly, he'd be surrounded by wives and concubines

38:30.500 --> 38:31.860
if it were legal.

38:31.860 --> 38:34.900
I'm sure that they do it anyway.

38:34.900 --> 38:39.700
They just don't do it legally, you know, and that probably goes for a lot of these senators,

38:39.700 --> 38:45.500
congressmen, you know, the ones that aren't fags because the fags, they're committing

38:45.500 --> 38:52.140
fag acts with all these little, you know, what do they call them, the little interns

38:52.140 --> 38:55.060
or, I mean, they're a bunch of pedophiles.

38:55.060 --> 39:00.140
They're known pedophiles in Congress and in the Senate that have been called out and exposed

39:00.140 --> 39:03.940
and yet they continue to lead, right?

39:03.940 --> 39:04.940
It's out there.

39:04.940 --> 39:11.220
I mean, do a little research, friend, and they've got these Washington DC madams that

39:11.220 --> 39:17.660
supply Congress and the Senate with prostitutes, right, for those who go that way, they're

39:17.660 --> 39:21.700
straight, so they could be with all their prostitutes and then you got a bunch of child

39:21.700 --> 39:27.660
molesters that are for the sodomites, you know, that's their death style that they follow.

39:27.660 --> 39:32.740
But the bottom line is that people who get into these positions of power, it goes to

39:32.740 --> 39:37.100
their head or people who make millions and billions of dollars, it goes to their head

39:37.100 --> 39:42.900
and they just think that they just have the right to do this, to just have all these women

39:42.900 --> 39:48.620
around them and, you know, it's wicked and all, but, you know, say, well, everybody's

39:48.620 --> 39:49.620
doing it.

39:49.620 --> 39:50.620
No, not everybody does it.

39:50.620 --> 39:54.940
No, they don't because, you know, I guarantee you that there are some men in Congress and

39:54.940 --> 39:58.940
in the Senate that don't participate in this, that are faithful to their wife.

39:58.940 --> 40:04.100
Now, I know that's hard to believe, but out of 635 of them, there's got to be a couple,

40:04.100 --> 40:05.100
right?

40:05.100 --> 40:06.440
I mean, that are actually faithful to their wife.

40:06.440 --> 40:09.920
It's got to be out there, you know.

40:09.920 --> 40:14.320
I mean, I would assume that Ron Paul was probably a guy that was like that because he was one

40:14.320 --> 40:18.880
that would always like return extra money that he didn't use and he wasn't like one

40:18.880 --> 40:22.240
of these trying to make millions and millions because, you know what, these two things go

40:22.240 --> 40:26.240
hand in hand because the love of money is the root of all evil.

40:26.240 --> 40:31.060
So when you see a senator who's just making millions and millions of dollars through insider

40:31.060 --> 40:35.880
trading and other dishonest means and he's just making millions and millions of dollars

40:35.880 --> 40:41.320
at the taxpayer's expense, you know, then that's probably the same kind of guy who's

40:41.320 --> 40:45.440
going to surround himself with a bunch of beautiful babes and just say, well, I'm entitled

40:45.440 --> 40:46.960
to this.

40:46.960 --> 40:51.800
And the guy who doesn't do that and who lives a humble and modest life and does not let

40:51.800 --> 40:58.920
the love of money take over is probably the same guy who's faithful to his wife, right?

40:58.920 --> 41:03.480
Because it's greed versus contentment and whether that has to do with money.

41:03.480 --> 41:07.760
You show me somebody who's content with the money that they have and I'll show you a guy

41:07.760 --> 41:10.280
who's probably faithful to his wife.

41:10.280 --> 41:14.600
You show me the guy who's always lusting after more money and he's got all the Donald Trump

41:14.600 --> 41:20.200
how to get rich books lined up on the shelf and Robert Kiyosaki and he's got all the get

41:20.200 --> 41:22.000
rich books.

41:22.000 --> 41:28.960
That's probably the same guy who is looking to trade up for someone else or have something

41:28.960 --> 41:29.960
on the side.

41:29.960 --> 41:32.360
It's probably the same guy.

41:32.880 --> 41:35.720
You show me the preacher who's a multimillionaire.

41:35.720 --> 41:39.800
He's probably the one who's going to have the sex scandal as well.

41:39.800 --> 41:44.440
He'll be the next one that's called out, the Bill Hybels or whatever that gets caught doing

41:44.440 --> 41:49.380
this stuff because the love of money is the root of all evil and it leads you into these

41:49.380 --> 41:52.100
other diverse temptations and lusts.

41:52.100 --> 41:56.840
So power, money, these things corrupt us.

41:56.840 --> 42:01.660
If God keeps you a little bit lean, you know what, maybe that's just where you belong because

42:01.660 --> 42:07.140
God knows that if you get super wealthy and have the fancy house and the fancy cars and

42:07.140 --> 42:10.880
the big bank account, you might start getting a little too big for your britches and pretty

42:10.880 --> 42:16.540
soon you're a little too good for your wife and a little too good for your husband.

42:16.540 --> 42:22.120
Be humble, be modest and be content with such things as you have is the moral of the story

42:22.120 --> 42:23.300
so you don't end up with these guys.

42:23.300 --> 42:26.620
You say, well I think I can handle it.

42:26.620 --> 42:29.460
The power, the money, I think I can handle it just fine.

42:29.460 --> 42:33.420
The man after God's own heart couldn't seem to handle it, David.

42:33.420 --> 42:38.300
So if he couldn't handle it, chances are we might do the same thing.

42:38.300 --> 42:41.940
So you know what, if somebody gave, what would you do if you had a million dollars?

42:41.940 --> 42:43.620
Get rid of it as fast as I could.

42:43.620 --> 42:45.180
Get rid of it.

42:45.180 --> 42:48.420
Just like a hot potato, just get it out of my hands, just get rid of it.

42:48.420 --> 42:50.940
Just spend it all fast.

42:50.940 --> 42:52.660
I'm not kidding.

42:52.660 --> 42:56.600
Just get rid of it because I don't want to sit on that kind of money, get all high and

42:56.600 --> 42:58.660
mighty and you know what I mean?

42:58.660 --> 43:04.860
I just start making donations to fundamental Baptist churches that I like but I don't want

43:04.860 --> 43:09.620
to give them too much or I'll ruin them.

43:09.620 --> 43:12.620
Then the church will go bad because they got too much money or something.

43:12.620 --> 43:15.940
So I give them a reasonable donation.

43:15.940 --> 43:18.380
Hopefully if that ever happened there would be a lot of churches you could kind of spread

43:18.380 --> 43:24.460
it around, just send everybody like 20,000 bucks or something, just enough to kind of

43:24.460 --> 43:26.740
do something but not go too crazy with it.

43:26.740 --> 43:28.140
You know what I mean?

43:28.140 --> 43:32.620
Give them some money, pass it around, but just get rid of it.

43:32.620 --> 43:36.220
Just get rid of it all and find something to do with it.

43:36.220 --> 43:37.220
It'd be stressful.

43:37.220 --> 43:38.220
It would stress me out.

43:38.220 --> 43:42.980
I'd just be like, what do I do?

43:42.980 --> 43:45.740
I don't want this responsibility.

43:45.740 --> 43:46.740
I'm serious.

43:46.740 --> 43:50.620
Say, oh, don't you want to spend on what?

43:50.620 --> 43:54.280
What do rich people even spend all their money on when they have millions of dollars?

43:54.280 --> 43:55.280
What's the difference?

43:55.280 --> 43:56.380
Here's what I want to know.

43:56.380 --> 44:00.580
What's the difference between having $1 million and $10 million?

44:00.580 --> 44:05.060
What's the difference between having $10 million and $100 million?

44:05.060 --> 44:06.060
How could you even spend it all?

44:06.060 --> 44:07.780
It would be like a full-time job.

44:07.780 --> 44:12.140
You'd have to hire people, just spenders that would just spend money for you.

44:12.140 --> 44:14.140
How would you even spend it all?

44:14.140 --> 44:16.220
Here's the thing.

44:16.220 --> 44:21.860
You can only fit so much food in your mouth and in your stomach.

44:21.860 --> 44:25.900
Even if you ate the three awesome meals a day, how much could that possibly cost?

44:25.940 --> 44:31.340
That's why you get these idiotic meals where they put gold dust on their food.

44:31.340 --> 44:34.740
You know what I'm talking about?

44:34.740 --> 44:43.660
Or they have coffee that an animal drank and then urinated or something.

44:43.660 --> 44:45.380
Fermented coffee?

44:45.380 --> 44:48.060
Is that really a thing?

44:48.060 --> 44:49.060
Can you explain it?

44:49.060 --> 44:51.060
I'm sorry to put you on the spot.

44:51.060 --> 44:52.620
It's just some Japanese type of coffee.

44:52.620 --> 44:54.260
Doesn't it go through an animal?

44:54.260 --> 44:55.260
I don't think so.

44:56.260 --> 44:59.260
So where did I get that crazy story?

44:59.260 --> 45:01.260
It's from Bali.

45:01.260 --> 45:04.260
Tell me about it.

45:04.260 --> 45:07.260
It's like a rodent kind of animal.

45:07.260 --> 45:09.260
They eat it and they poop it out.

45:09.260 --> 45:11.260
Then it breaks the coffee being down.

45:11.260 --> 45:13.260
Then they take that and they're dying down.

45:13.260 --> 45:17.260
I'm glad that we had someone here that could fact check me.

45:17.260 --> 45:18.260
This is what it is.

45:18.260 --> 45:23.260
It's a little rodent, eats the coffee, and then defecates the coffee.

45:23.260 --> 45:27.260
I was thinking, number one, it's number two.

45:27.260 --> 45:29.260
Roast.

45:29.260 --> 45:33.260
Then they take that coffee and it's like, oh, this is a better coffee.

45:33.260 --> 45:36.260
No, I'll just stick with Folgers, thank you very much.

45:36.260 --> 45:41.260
I don't even drink coffee.

45:41.260 --> 45:46.260
But the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup after hearing that story.

45:49.260 --> 45:52.260
That's the kind of crap that people spend their money on.

45:52.260 --> 45:54.260
No pun intended.

45:54.260 --> 45:56.260
That's what they spend their money on.

45:56.260 --> 46:02.260
It's $500 and you get this cup of coffee and it's gone through an animal's bowels.

46:02.260 --> 46:06.260
Or you're eating gold.

46:06.260 --> 46:09.260
Gold's not food.

46:09.260 --> 46:14.260
I get all the metal I need in Fruity Pebbles with the copper and zinc and all that.

46:14.260 --> 46:15.260
No, I'm just kidding.

46:15.260 --> 46:17.260
I don't eat Fruity Pebbles.

46:17.260 --> 46:20.260
Every once in a while I do, but it's very rare.

46:20.260 --> 46:22.260
Just every few years.

46:22.260 --> 46:24.260
You've got to live a little.

46:24.260 --> 46:26.260
The point is, what can you eat?

46:26.260 --> 46:28.260
You have to dream up these crazy meals.

46:28.260 --> 46:35.260
Everybody knows that $30 or $40 gets you a real nice meal pretty much anywhere.

46:35.260 --> 46:39.260
You can get some really fancy meals for $30.

46:39.260 --> 46:43.260
You can get a pretty amazing meal at some places for $10.

46:43.260 --> 46:49.260
I went out to lunch with a friend today and my entree was $6.75.

46:49.260 --> 46:51.260
And it was awesome.

46:51.260 --> 46:53.260
I was real happy with it.

46:53.260 --> 46:57.260
I was at this Sun Asian place on 24th and Baseline.

46:57.260 --> 47:00.260
It's kind of tucked over there by the Ross and the Target.

47:00.260 --> 47:03.260
This message was brought to you in part by Sun Asian.

47:03.260 --> 47:07.260
Now I don't just walk into any old Chinese restaurant and just start eating

47:07.260 --> 47:10.260
because it can be hit or miss.

47:10.260 --> 47:13.260
It can go either way.

47:13.260 --> 47:16.260
Panda Express is kind of safe.

47:16.260 --> 47:19.260
But this place was good.

47:19.260 --> 47:21.260
Sun Asian, I think it was called.

47:21.260 --> 47:23.260
It was like $7.

47:23.260 --> 47:24.260
And you know what?

47:24.260 --> 47:26.260
I was real happy with it.

47:26.260 --> 47:31.260
But even if you just want to have a party in your mouth every single meal,

47:31.260 --> 47:35.260
that's only going to cost $100 a day per person to really go nuts

47:35.260 --> 47:37.260
and flame and yawn and everything.

47:37.260 --> 47:39.260
I mean, how much could it cost?

47:39.260 --> 47:41.260
But it's just stupid, isn't it?

47:41.260 --> 47:47.260
Just buying crazy $20,000 suits and a $15,000 bell.

47:47.260 --> 47:50.260
Vanity of vanity, sayeth the preacher.

47:50.260 --> 47:52.260
All is vanity.

47:52.260 --> 47:53.260
It's stupid.

47:53.260 --> 47:57.260
And everything is like that in life where it's just, oh, 10 wives.

47:57.260 --> 47:59.260
Oh, make it 20.

47:59.260 --> 48:01.260
He didn't love any of them.

48:01.260 --> 48:02.260
You know what?

48:02.260 --> 48:05.260
He's still up on the roof, lonely and bored,

48:05.260 --> 48:09.260
even though there's 20 wives in the house.

48:09.260 --> 48:12.260
It's better to dwell in the corner of the housetop

48:12.260 --> 48:14.260
than with 20 of those wives, apparently,

48:14.260 --> 48:18.260
because that's what he's up there hanging out.

48:18.260 --> 48:19.260
Guess what?

48:19.260 --> 48:21.260
It's not what it's cracked up to be.

48:21.260 --> 48:25.260
That coffee is not what it's cracked up to be, okay?

48:25.260 --> 48:26.260
You know, none of it is.

48:26.260 --> 48:28.260
It's all stupid.

48:28.260 --> 48:31.260
And people spend their whole life seeking after that stuff.

48:31.260 --> 48:32.260
Well, you know what?

48:32.260 --> 48:34.260
You better get that out of your heart,

48:34.260 --> 48:37.260
because that love of money will lead you into all the other sins.

48:37.260 --> 48:38.260
It's the root of all evil.

48:38.260 --> 48:39.260
Get that love of money.

48:39.260 --> 48:42.260
Just quit desiring riches and all that stuff,

48:42.260 --> 48:46.260
and just be happy with what you have,

48:46.260 --> 48:49.260
with who you are, with what you do.

48:49.260 --> 48:53.260
You know, be content with such things as you have.

48:53.260 --> 48:57.260
And then the rest of the chapter here basically just goes through a genealogy,

48:57.260 --> 48:59.260
starting in verse 10.

48:59.260 --> 49:01.260
It runs through the kings.

49:01.260 --> 49:05.260
You know, the kings Solomon, Rehoboam, Abijah, Asa, Jehoshaphat,

49:05.260 --> 49:07.260
Jorah, Maaziah.

49:07.260 --> 49:11.260
Pretty much, pretty close to the list that you'll find in Matthew chapter 1,

49:11.260 --> 49:15.260
where he kind of runs through all those different kings and everything like that.

49:15.260 --> 49:16.260
Let's go ahead and have a word of prayer.

49:16.260 --> 49:19.260
Father, we thank you so much for your word, Lord,

49:19.260 --> 49:22.260
and we thank you for the good and bad examples in the Bible,

49:22.260 --> 49:24.260
so we can learn from both, Lord.

49:24.260 --> 49:30.260
Help us to follow your perfect plan for our life by marrying just one woman

49:30.260 --> 49:33.260
and staying faithful to that woman for the rest of our life, Lord.

49:33.260 --> 49:35.260
Help every man in here to be a good husband.

49:35.260 --> 49:40.260
Help every wife to be a virtuous, godly, and helpful wife, Lord.

49:40.260 --> 49:42.260
And help us to follow your plan for our lives

49:42.260 --> 49:47.260
and not to be covetous of money and all the dumb things that the world offers.

49:47.260 --> 49:48.260
In Jesus' name we pray.
