Here in Deuteronomy 21, we see the importance of resolving 25:56.920 --> 26:03.640 unsavory situations, unsavory matters, and essentially bringing closure to different 26:03.640 --> 26:08.840 various situations. I feel like that's a pretty clear theme throughout this particular chapter. 26:08.920 --> 26:13.800 A lot of these events that are being brought up are kind of random, not necessarily directly 26:13.800 --> 26:20.440 connected, but I think what connects them is the idea that these are just unsavory situations, 26:20.440 --> 26:27.560 unsavory matters that God is providing some kind of resolution that can ultimately give people 26:27.560 --> 26:34.040 closure and we can move on from these uncomfortable situations. And the reality is, in this world, 26:34.040 --> 26:39.640 there's going to be times when you have to deal with uncomfortable situations, where you're going 26:39.640 --> 26:46.280 to have to deal with messy situations, things you don't really want to have to deal with necessarily, 26:46.280 --> 26:52.600 but it's important to still resolve them. It's important to still have some closure and move on. 26:52.600 --> 27:00.040 In verses one through eight, we're kind of dealing with an unsolved murder case. So we have this scenario of an unsolved 28:22.120 --> 28:28.760 mystery essentially regarding the death of a particular person, and we have to understand 28:28.760 --> 28:34.120 that all the law is encompassing various situations. If there's a possibility to figure out 28:35.000 --> 28:40.600 who is responsible or what happened in this particular scenario, of course you would do that. 28:40.600 --> 28:47.560 This is essentially just saying we can't figure it out, we don't know, this guy's dead, and he's 28:47.560 --> 28:53.240 kind of dead out in the middle of nowhere, so they're trying to figure out who's responsible, 28:53.240 --> 28:56.920 that's why they measure. They measure and they find the city that's closest to them. 28:56.920 --> 29:03.400 Essentially that city now has the jurisdiction over this problem, over this situation. And again, 29:03.400 --> 29:06.920 this is a problem that they didn't create necessarily, this is a problem that they are 29:06.920 --> 29:13.480 not necessarily directly responsible for, but they are responsible for it. God is going to hold them 29:13.480 --> 29:17.800 responsible because it's in their jurisdiction, it's in their neighborhood, it's under their 29:17.800 --> 29:22.840 umbrella, and so you know what? They have to deal with this particular scenario. They're going to 29:22.840 --> 29:29.400 take a sacrifice, they have to take a heifer, put them in a rough valley, slaughter it, and basically 29:29.400 --> 29:35.160 confess to God, hey, we don't know what's going on here, we're not trying to cover anything up, 29:35.800 --> 29:43.400 we just genuinely don't know what's happened at all, and please do not hold us guilty 29:43.400 --> 29:50.200 for this situation going unresolved. Because you know it's a shame and embarrassment for you to 29:50.200 --> 29:56.760 have unsolved murder cases. You know it's not a good thing to have a serious crime committed 29:56.760 --> 30:03.480 and essentially just, well we don't know, let's just move on. Where you 30:50.120 --> 30:55.160 just allow people to just get away with murder or to kill someone and no one's going to hold you 30:55.160 --> 30:59.720 responsible for a particular action. You know it's a shame, it's embarrassment, and in fact 30:59.720 --> 31:05.400 God is going to hold you guilty if you allow people to get away with murder when you could 31:05.400 --> 31:10.040 have resolved it, when you could have figured it out, when you could have dealt with that particular 31:10.040 --> 31:16.920 situation. Look when people have authority and they do not actually exercise that authority, 31:16.920 --> 31:21.160 God is going to take them to task because God is the King of Kings, he's the Lord of Lords, 31:21.160 --> 31:26.360 he's the God of Gods according to the Bible, and God expects those that he's put in positions of 31:26.360 --> 31:33.400 authority to use that authority to accomplish his will. He will hold them responsible for not 31:33.400 --> 31:39.560 exercising their authority, for not taking people to task, for not dealing with difficult situations, 31:39.560 --> 31:44.760 and so you know those that are under shepherds of God, those that are in positions of authority 31:44.760 --> 31:51.240 and leadership, they need to take care of serious matters. You know it's not okay to just say well 31:51.240 --> 31:54.920 I think Jeffrey Epstein killed himself and we don't have any camera footage and whatever, 31:54.920 --> 32:00.680 we're just going to move on. Look that's shameful. It's shameful to have this huge 32:00.680 --> 32:04.520 Epstein file list and we're just not going to deal with it and we're not going to talk about it. 32:04.520 --> 32:08.520 You know that's embarrassing when you're not dealing with serious crimes and serious issues. 32:09.080 --> 32:14.840 It's embarrassing when you just allow unsolved murder mysteries and unsolved criminal elements 32:14.840 --> 32:19.880 to just go on in society. I mean someone got killed, 32:42.920 --> 32:48.520 no one was held responsible, meaning no justice was served. Justice was not served in this case, 32:48.520 --> 32:53.320 and that's again shameful, it's embarrassing, and so they're begging God, hey even though there is 32:53.320 --> 32:59.480 no justice, please forgive us of allowing this particular thing to happen, of not being able to 32:59.480 --> 33:04.600 know how to resolve this particular matter of this situation because justice should be served 33:04.600 --> 33:09.240 by those that are in positions of authority. We don't want to allow just people to get away 33:09.240 --> 33:14.760 with whatever. You know and sometimes obviously even if you figure out a situation you know what's 33:14.760 --> 33:19.800 the just thing to do, you can still extend mercy and that's okay, but at least it's resolved. This 33:19.800 --> 33:25.000 is an unresolved issue, they have to get it right. Now it says in verse number nine, 33:25.000 --> 33:29.480 so shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you when thou shalt do that which is 33:29.480 --> 33:35.160 right in the sight of the Lord. The only way you're going to clear yourself from God being mad at you 33:35.160 --> 33:41.240 is when you do what is right in the sight of God. Not what's right in the sight of man, not what's 33:41.240 --> 33:46.360 right in the sight of you, not what you think is right, but what God thinks is right. When you do 33:46.360 --> 33:53.800 what's right according to God, then he clears you of guilt, he clears you of responsibility, 33:53.800 --> 33:58.440 but at the end of the day we have to make sure that everything we do is right in the sight of God. 33:59.640 --> 34:06.280 Now what is innocent blood? Innocent blood is where someone actually died. Innocent blood here is a clear thing in the Bible of someone actually dying, 34:28.200 --> 34:35.160 a blood being actually shed and it being unresolved in a particular situation. And again, 34:35.160 --> 34:40.600 this is serious. God takes bloodshed very serious because man is made in the image of God, 34:41.400 --> 34:47.880 the life is in the blood, so God takes bloodshed very seriously. You know, at the very beginning 34:47.880 --> 34:53.880 of the Bible, Cain is punished severely for shedding his brother's blood. After Noah gets 34:53.880 --> 34:58.680 off the ark, God takes it seriously and puts the death penalty, the first time the death penalty 34:58.680 --> 35:05.800 is ever introduced in the Bible, it's for murder specifically. So we're talking about innocent blood, 35:05.800 --> 35:11.720 we're talking about a serious matter. We're not talking about someone got beat up. We're not talking 35:11.720 --> 35:17.880 about someone got stolen from. We're talking about pretty much the most extreme thing that can happen, 35:17.880 --> 35:23.080 first degree murder, someone slaughtered and the Bible is saying, hey this is a serious issue you 35:23.080 --> 35:28.520 need to resolve in this particular situation. You know, in Texas we've had the death penalty 35:28.520 --> 35:33.880 historically and I think Governor Rick Perry, he actually executed a lot of different people 35:33.880 --> 35:39.160 and most of the time it was for homicide, it was for killing someone, it was usually the criminal 35:39.160 --> 35:45.960 offense. But it seems like many states today will no longer execute people even for murder. 35:46.040 --> 35:53.080 I mean you can have people commit mass murder, serial killers and they will not put them to death. 35:53.080 --> 35:59.800 You know, God is still holding that place guilty for not resolving that matter and look, 35:59.800 --> 36:04.600 it's not comfortable, it's not a fun thing, execution is not a good thing in a sense that 36:04.600 --> 36:08.040 you don't want to have to deal with this and do this. You know, you want to cleanse yourself from 36:08.040 --> 36:15.240 the guilt of innocent blood when blood has been shed because innocent blood being shed is a serious 36:15.240 --> 36:20.840 problem and God wants justice, God wants restitution. So that's why they have to offer a sacrifice 36:20.840 --> 36:27.160 and they offer this animal sacrifice in its place. They're shedding its blood to essentially rectify 36:27.160 --> 36:33.080 the situation because what should have happened? A man's blood should have been shed. You know, 36:33.080 --> 36:37.560 why are they killing the animal? They're killing the animal because it represents that a man, 36:37.560 --> 36:43.560 whoever is the guilty party, the offender, his blood should have been shed. The death penalty is 36:43.560 --> 36:51.400 applied to someone shedding someone's blood and then of course this has a spiritual symbolism. 36:51.400 --> 36:58.840 What would be that spiritual symbolism is how Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, his blood had to be shed 36:58.840 --> 37:07.480 for us for the remission of sins because God is a just God and God cannot allow sin to go unpunished 37:07.480 --> 37:13.240 and so there had to be a sacrifice, there had to be a substitute and even in this scenario, 37:13.240 --> 37:19.480 hey something has happened. You know, to me it's kind of like how we think about, we talk about 37:19.480 --> 37:26.600 sins, you can sin on purpose and you can kind of sin ignorantly and in this scenario you almost 37:26.600 --> 37:31.480 kind of look at it as more of like an ignorant sin in the sense that they didn't see it, right? 37:31.480 --> 37:37.000 They didn't see this murder, they weren't there, they didn't partake, so they're kind of ignorant 37:37.640 --> 37:42.280 of this particular murder case. They don't know who's the really responsible party but notice God 37:42.280 --> 37:47.560 still holds the same guilt on them even when they're ignorant and the same way that God is 37:47.560 --> 37:54.360 still going to hold us guilty for ignorant sins. Even if you're ignorant and you sin, you're still 37:54.360 --> 37:58.680 guilty before God and you know what? You would still need to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to 37:58.680 --> 38:04.200 be saved. You know, there's this idea out there that's a false doctrine. There's a major false 38:04.200 --> 38:08.760 doctrine in non-denominational churches and Calvinist churches and many churches today 38:08.760 --> 38:16.520 that will teach, oh the guy in the jungle who is ignorant of the gospel, he still gets a free pass, 38:16.520 --> 38:22.520 he still gets to go to heaven because he's quote ignorant and he's only responded to the light that 38:22.520 --> 38:28.200 he had or whatever. Look, that is a lie. The ignorant person will die and go to hell. 38:28.360 --> 38:35.560 Right. Now maybe he won't be as punished as severely as those that are, you know, in Israel 38:35.560 --> 38:41.320 or something. Maybe he won't be as punished as severely as Jeffrey Dahmer. Maybe he won't be as 38:41.320 --> 38:46.200 punished as severely as serial killers but at the end of the day he's going to the same hell and it 38:46.200 --> 38:49.960 doesn't really matter. I don't even think that anybody's going to be in hell and be like well at 38:49.960 --> 38:56.360 least I'm not in the lower part. They're going to hate it. Yes it is sad. Yes it is serious. Yes it is sober and you know what, 39:26.040 --> 39:29.720 people should be doing is they should be measuring from their city and saying hey, 39:29.720 --> 39:34.760 everybody in this entire jurisdiction, we're going to try and get them the gospel because if they 39:34.760 --> 39:39.720 don't they're going to die and go to hell and take some personal responsibility for their corner of 39:39.720 --> 39:43.960 the earth and say hey, let us go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 39:43.960 --> 39:49.480 This is in my neighborhood. I better take ownership for it and not have the guilt of this blood on my 39:49.480 --> 39:54.760 hands. What did the apostle Paul say in the book of Acts? He said hey, I'm pure from the blood of 39:54.760 --> 39:59.480 all men. Why? Because he actually preached them the gospel. But let me tell you something, 39:59.480 --> 40:04.360 there's many churches today that are not pure from the blood of their own neighborhoods today 40:04.360 --> 40:08.280 because they won't even go out and preach the gospel and get those people saved and of course 40:08.280 --> 40:13.000 that is the picture here. Oh well, I just think they're going to go to heaven anyways. Nope, 40:13.000 --> 40:17.640 the unsavory truth is that most people will die and go to hell. The unsavory truth is that the 40:17.640 --> 40:22.200 ignorant will still die and go to hell and that you need to go and you need to confront them 40:22.840 --> 40:27.640 about being saved. We need someone to get saved. We need to you know give these people the opportunity to get 42:39.400 --> 42:46.680 right with God and so we can say to God, hey I told them. Not oh well nobody told, we just we have 42:46.680 --> 42:52.520 all these dead bodies laying around and we never dealt with any of them. The Bible says that the 42:52.520 --> 42:58.360 unsaved are like dead bodies. They're just dead out there. They're dead in trespasses and sins 42:58.360 --> 43:04.760 and we need to go out and we need to resolve these particular situations. We need to bring 43:04.760 --> 43:10.840 you know some closure for ourselves even that hey we went into the whole world. Hey we preached this 43:10.840 --> 43:15.080 neighborhood. Hey we gave these people an opportunity. You know how can you sleep at 43:15.080 --> 43:20.680 night knowing that eight billion people are headed for hell and nothing in this life even 43:20.680 --> 43:26.840 matters except for that and you're doing nothing about it? You know that's that's the most important 43:26.840 --> 43:31.560 work. It's the first work. It's the first love. How can you say you love people when you won't even 43:31.560 --> 43:36.840 try to get them saved? When you won't even try to pull them out of the fire? You know that's the 43:36.840 --> 43:42.120 most important aspect here and again there's so many layers and so many applications we can make 43:42.120 --> 43:46.600 to this story. We don't need to just necessarily read the Old Testament law and just think well 43:46.600 --> 43:50.120 good thing I'm not a city official having to deal with unsolved murder cases. You know what? You are 43:50.120 --> 43:55.480 having to deal with unsolved murder cases. These people are dead in trespasses and sins and you need 43:55.480 --> 44:00.280 to try and get them right with God through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ so that you're 44:00.280 --> 44:07.720 pure from the blood of this innocent person. Again you say oh man you try to make everything 44:07.720 --> 44:11.720 about soul winning in the gospel. That's because everything is about soul winning in the gospel. 44:12.440 --> 44:18.200 I'm not trying to make it. That's just what the Bible is. That's right. I mean isn't it cool that 44:18.200 --> 44:22.680 it's like no matter what small sliver of the Bible you had even in the Old Testament you were able to 44:22.680 --> 44:26.040 find the gospel in there. You were able to figure out the importance of life. You were able to figure 44:26.040 --> 44:30.520 out hey you need to preach the gospel. It was there somewhere and all you needed was the Holy 44:30.520 --> 44:39.000 Spirit to guide you into all truth. We need some resolution in this world today and we need to you 44:39.000 --> 44:46.840 know help people have some closure today and you know when people are not saved and they're not 44:46.840 --> 44:54.680 like drunk or something they feel uncomfortable. They're nervous about death. They don't have 44:54.680 --> 44:59.720 clothes. You know what the gospel brings to you? It brings you closure doesn't it? Because you're 44:59.720 --> 45:06.600 like I mean when you sin you feel guilty about it. I mean a normal person obviously there's psychopaths 45:06.600 --> 45:11.320 out there that don't but normal people you sin you feel bad about it. You feel guilty about it. 45:11.640 --> 45:18.680 The gospel brings brings closure doesn't it? And of course we can still feel fear for judgment in 45:18.680 --> 45:22.760 this earth and we understand that we need to constantly get right with God on a regular basis 45:22.760 --> 45:27.160 but isn't the gospel bring just closure in your life? When you first get to say oh I'm headed for 45:27.160 --> 45:33.240 heaven now. Closure. And then of course you know realizing that even in the future when you sin 45:33.800 --> 45:36.840 and you get right with God you're like but I'm still on my way to heaven and it just brings 45:36.840 --> 45:42.680 resolution. It brings it brings closure to your life. It helps you feel good but the guy who's 45:42.680 --> 45:47.800 not right with God he's so nervous. Why do you think it is the catholic has to go to mass and 45:47.800 --> 45:54.200 has to confess his sins just all the time? Multiple times a week he has to constantly go and confess 45:54.200 --> 45:59.400 his sins. He has no closure. He never has closure. He's worried that he's going to go to hell every 45:59.400 --> 46:05.800 single day of his life. Why is it that the Hindus and the the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons 46:05.800 --> 46:11.080 and whatever other false religion that they're just constantly just every day just just seeking 46:11.080 --> 46:14.440 and searching and trying to make sure that they're right they have no closure. 46:16.120 --> 46:21.960 The gospel brings closure in someone's life. The gospel brings you comfort. It brings you resolution 46:21.960 --> 46:26.120 to an unsavory matter. What was the unsavory matter? You sinned against God and you're guilty 46:26.120 --> 46:31.000 against God and God has a fierce anger and wrath towards sin. You know what? You can have closure 46:31.000 --> 46:35.720 through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ and what he did for you and then you can have the joy 46:35.720 --> 46:42.280 of salvation every single day of your life. You know David said restore unto me the joy of thy 46:42.280 --> 46:49.000 salvation. Salvation's joy. Now again it's not to say that when you're saved you can never feel bad 46:49.000 --> 46:54.840 about sin again. It's not to say that you shouldn't tell God sorry when you sin but you can still have 46:54.840 --> 46:59.800 that that comfort and that boldness to go into the throne of grace knowing that you can still 46:59.800 --> 47:04.840 receive mercy and not even necessarily receive the the punishment that you truly deserve. 47:06.360 --> 47:10.920 Because once you get saved you're never going to hell no matter what. Interestingly enough they 47:10.920 --> 47:16.200 take the animal to a rough valley. You know God's a practical God too. Notice he's not just spilling 47:16.200 --> 47:21.400 blood all over the crops and and all over the good land. It's like hey let's go to the disgusting 47:21.400 --> 47:26.600 place and just kind of do this you know and so again God's both practical and spiritual. 47:27.160 --> 47:32.760 God understands the carnal nature of life and also the spiritual natures of life and you know it's 47:32.760 --> 47:38.600 great to follow God's commandments because he's not trying to harm your life practically to meet 47:38.600 --> 47:46.520 some kind of a spiritual need and anytime people are doing things that are just totally impractical 47:46.520 --> 47:52.280 or just for some reason just don't seem to match like a carnal blessing it's not really of God. 47:53.080 --> 47:57.880 God doesn't really ask you to do things that are just going to harm you in a carnal way 47:58.360 --> 48:03.160 so you can be spiritually right with him. You'll notice that many of the things that he has us do 48:03.800 --> 48:10.520 make sense practically and carnally as well. That there's a physical benefit to God's commandments 48:10.520 --> 48:15.320 not just a spiritual benefit and again even think about like you went to get right with God you went 48:15.320 --> 48:20.520 to the temple or you went somewhere you made these sacrifices you got to eat them. It's like hey we 48:20.520 --> 48:26.840 slaughtered the cow now we're having steak. Like that wasn't a bad thing. You know think about the 48:26.920 --> 48:31.880 religion of Hinduism. They're taking all this really good food and just spilling it on rocks 48:31.880 --> 48:36.840 and not getting to eat it. It's like that was really impractical. You know that was that was 48:36.840 --> 48:41.560 kind of a silly thing to do. It's like false religions will tell them to beat themselves. 48:41.560 --> 48:45.560 It's like well that's pretty impractical that doesn't seem to work very well. Catholicism 48:45.560 --> 48:50.280 will teach people to become a nun. Well how are you going to reproduce when you're a nun now? 48:50.920 --> 48:55.560 You know it's just like oh be celibate. That's going to work out for 99 percent of men today. 48:56.280 --> 49:00.840 Right that's not going to cause any problems. It's like look false religion is always impractical. 49:01.560 --> 49:08.040 God's religion is very practical. It makes sense. It's going to be a blessing. They're not grievous. God's not asking us to do 49:17.800 --> 49:24.040 silly stuff that's that's going to be self-harm, harmful to our land, harmful to our nation. God 49:24.040 --> 49:29.640 does things that are going to be a blessing unto us and obviously spilling blood is not a good thing 49:29.640 --> 49:34.200 in general for the environment. So it's like let's go to the rough place you know and let's spill the 49:34.200 --> 49:42.280 blood there and drain the blood in that particular area. So let's keep reading here verse 10.
