On Wednesday night we are going through 00:28:56.150 --> 00:29:00.620 the book of the Bible, one chapter a week, and tonight we will be in the last chapter 00:29:00.620 --> 00:29:05.370 in the book of Ruth, Ruth chapter number four. So just as a recap, back in chapter number 00:29:05.370 --> 00:29:09.840 one, we have this guy whose name is Elimelech. He took his family to Moab because there was 00:29:09.840 --> 00:29:16.110 a famine in Judah, and his two sons took two daughters from Moab to wife and him, and 00:29:16.110 --> 00:29:22.750 his two sons died. And then Naomi, his wife, took Ruth back to Judah. In chapter two, talk 00:29:22.750 --> 00:29:29.280 about Ruth happened to glean the field at Boaz's field, which was Elimelech's kinsman, 00:29:29.280 --> 00:29:34.070 and Boaz showed Ruth protection, provision, as well as favor. And last week in chapter 00:29:34.070 --> 00:29:40.280 five, number three, Ruth actually proposed to Boaz, but Boaz said that there was a man 00:29:40.280 --> 00:29:46.970 nearer of king than he was, and if the nearer kinsman said no, then Boaz was going to take 00:29:46.970 --> 00:29:58.640 Ruth to wife. So the title of the sermon tonight is "There Was a Redeemer." So look at verse 00:29:58.640 --> 00:30:06.570 number one, verse number one. Point number one, the nearer kinsman, the nearer kinsman. 00:30:06.570 --> 00:30:13.660 Ruth 4.1 says this, "Then went Boaz up to the gate and sat him down there, and behold, 00:30:13.660 --> 00:30:20.860 the kinsman," that's the nearer kinsman, "the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by, and unto 00:30:20.860 --> 00:30:25.510 whom he said, 'Ho, such a one.'" Now, Boaz was not calling him a "ho," okay? The word 00:30:25.510 --> 00:30:31.290 "ho" was an interjection just to call someone's attention, okay? "Ho, such a one," so Boaz was 00:30:31.290 --> 00:30:37.320 speaking to this nearer kinsman, "turned aside, sat down here, and he turned aside and sat 00:30:37.320 --> 00:30:46.160 down, and he," Boaz, "took ten men of the elders of the city and sat down here, and they sat 00:30:46.160 --> 00:30:52.160 down." Now, the first thing I wanted to notice is this was a public gathering, okay? Now, what's 00:30:52.160 --> 00:31:00.120 about to take place is the transfer of property, the purchase of the land that belongs to Elimelech, 00:31:00.120 --> 00:31:07.190 as well as the purchase of the person Ruth, okay? Now, last week we talked about that some things 00:31:07.190 --> 00:31:13.490 are better to be said in private just to avoid rumors and gossips. The Bible says if you have 00:31:13.490 --> 00:31:22.680 any trespass against your brethren, hey, tell him and his fault between me and him alone, right? 00:31:22.680 --> 00:31:29.800 The Bible says in Proverbs 25 verse 9, "Debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself and discover 00:31:29.800 --> 00:31:39.120 not a secret to another." Some things need to be said in private to avoid rumors, gossips, 00:31:39.120 --> 00:31:46.500 false accusations, but sometimes we need to make things public and just bring in the witnesses. 00:31:46.500 --> 00:31:52.830 Especially when you buy a house and when you sign the final paperwork, usually there's a notary, 00:31:52.830 --> 00:32:01.350 right? Witnessing you sign the papers. So in this case, it's kind of a similar comparison 00:32:01.350 --> 00:32:07.110 because a legal transaction is about to take place and this needs to be publicly established. 00:32:07.110 --> 00:32:15.320 And Boaz, he did not just bring two or three witnesses, Boaz brought ten. So this is an 00:32:15.320 --> 00:32:22.300 important issue because it affects the family name, the land ownership, and the inheritance. 00:32:22.300 --> 00:32:27.430 So that's a big deal. He needs the witnesses to avoid any, you know, gossips, to make sure 00:32:27.430 --> 00:32:33.330 the transfer of ownership, you know, went well. Okay, look at verse number three. "And 00:32:33.330 --> 00:32:39.760 he said unto the kinsmen, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth 00:32:39.760 --> 00:32:47.200 a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelex." Okay, now this is a detail that we did not 00:32:47.200 --> 00:32:53.870 know from the previous chapters. There was a land involved, okay, and Naomi was selling 00:32:53.870 --> 00:33:03.490 a land that was Elimelex. Now, you know, the land is still considered part of the Elimelex 00:33:03.490 --> 00:33:08.880 family inheritance, and the land does not really belong to Naomi, and she was just arranging 00:33:08.880 --> 00:33:13.370 the sale, okay, because everything is tied to the family name. Now turn the Bible to 00:33:13.370 --> 00:33:22.620 Leviticus 25. Keep replacing the book of Ruth, go to Leviticus chapter 25. Let me show you 00:33:22.620 --> 00:33:32.190 the principle of redemption for the land. Leviticus 25, take a look at verse 23. Leviticus 00:33:32.190 --> 00:33:42.000 25 verse 23, the Bible says this, "The land shall not be sold forever, for the land is 00:33:42.000 --> 00:33:47.570 mine, for ye are strangers and sojourners with me, and in all the land of your possession 00:33:47.570 --> 00:33:53.330 ye shall grant a redemption for the land, if thy brother be waxed and poor, and hath 00:33:53.330 --> 00:33:59.930 sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he 00:33:59.930 --> 00:34:07.030 redeem that which his brother sold." So the land is not supposed to be permanently leaving 00:34:07.030 --> 00:34:15.150 the family. The land was supposed to be redeemed or bought back by the families or the relatives 00:34:15.150 --> 00:34:21.140 of the poor, okay? So this may show me that Naomi may have chosen to sell the land out 00:34:21.140 --> 00:34:28.600 of necessity, maybe because she was poor. Again, that was the assumption, maybe not. 00:34:28.600 --> 00:34:35.540 But this also is not just about preserving the family inheritance, but also about preserving 00:34:35.540 --> 00:34:44.230 the family name. Everything in the Old Testament, there's a big family bond even to the property 00:34:44.230 --> 00:34:51.820 itself. That's why God said, "The land shall not be sold forever." Look at verse 26, "And 00:34:51.820 --> 00:34:57.550 if the man have known to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it, then let him count the 00:34:57.550 --> 00:35:04.110 years of the sales thereof, and restore the surplus unto the man to whom he sold it, that 00:35:04.110 --> 00:35:10.850 he may return unto his possession." So the flow is, if a man becomes poor, he can sell 00:35:10.850 --> 00:35:21.070 his land. And then a nearer Kingsman can buy it back. And if no Kingsman buys it back, 00:35:21.070 --> 00:35:28.780 the man himself can buy back his land if he can afford it. So that's the order. And basically 00:35:28.780 --> 00:35:34.530 God built a system where loss of property didn't have to be permanent. Because when 00:35:34.530 --> 00:35:40.240 the land is assigned to you, that is yours. You can choose to sell it, but you can always 00:35:40.240 --> 00:35:46.150 buy it back. You know, either yourself or your relative, your kinsman, your family. 00:35:46.150 --> 00:35:51.370 But someone has to be willing to pay the price. Okay, now go back to Ruth chapter 4. Ruth 00:35:51.370 --> 00:36:02.260 chapter 4. Ruth chapter 4. Look at verse number 4. Ruth chapter 4, verse number 4. To me that's 00:36:02.260 --> 00:36:08.220 a pretty awesome system, you know, maybe contradicting the American concept, but that's, you know, 00:36:08.220 --> 00:36:13.840 the system that God has set up. Ruth chapter 4, look at verse number 4. And I thought you 00:36:13.840 --> 00:36:19.860 advertise thee, saying, "Buy it before the inhabitants and before the elders of my people. 00:36:19.860 --> 00:36:26.800 If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it. But if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me that 00:36:26.800 --> 00:36:32.280 I may know, for there's none to redeem it besides thee, and I am after thee." And he 00:36:32.280 --> 00:36:38.800 said, "I will redeem it." Okay. Notice the nearer Kingsman said that he would redeem 00:36:38.800 --> 00:36:43.950 the land. He's willing to pay for the land, but then there's a plot twist. Look at the 00:36:43.950 --> 00:36:49.420 next verse, verse number five. Then said Boaz, "What day thou buyest the field of the hand 00:36:49.420 --> 00:36:55.650 of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise 00:36:55.650 --> 00:37:01.870 up the name of the dead upon his inheritance." So Boaz was saying that not only that you 00:37:01.870 --> 00:37:07.760 have to buy the land, but you also have to buy Ruth for what purpose? To raise up the 00:37:07.760 --> 00:37:13.540 name of the dead upon his inheritance. Back in the Old Testament Israel, inheritance was 00:37:13.540 --> 00:37:20.710 not just property, you know? It was also tied to a man's name and his lineage. If a man 00:37:20.710 --> 00:37:27.610 died without any children, without any seed, his name could be cut off, okay? So God essentially 00:37:27.610 --> 00:37:35.350 built a system to prevent that, you know? Everything is about lineage, inheritance. 00:37:35.350 --> 00:37:46.780 Keep replacing Ruth, go forward to Genesis 38. Genesis chapter 38. Genesis chapter 38. 00:37:46.780 --> 00:37:57.020 Look at verse number 6. Genesis 38, verse number 6. The Bible says this, "And Judah 00:37:57.020 --> 00:38:03.890 took a wife for Ur his firstborn, whose name was Tamar." So Ur married Tamar, and Ur, 00:38:03.890 --> 00:38:08.630 Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord slew him. So the 00:38:08.630 --> 00:38:15.050 Lord killed Tamar's husband. Now Tamar became a widow. Verse number 8, "And Judah said 00:38:15.050 --> 00:38:21.730 unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife." So Onan was Ur's brother, and married her, 00:38:21.730 --> 00:38:28.130 and raise up seed to thy brother. So again, that's a biblical concept. And Onan knew that 00:38:28.130 --> 00:38:32.640 the seed should not be his, and he came to pass when he went unto his brother's wife, 00:38:32.640 --> 00:38:37.030 that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the 00:38:37.030 --> 00:38:42.420 thing which he did displease the Lord, wherefore he slew him also. So apparently, God took 00:38:42.420 --> 00:38:48.660 family responsibility seriously, right? And God cares about preserving the name, and God 00:38:48.660 --> 00:38:57.550 judges those people who refuse rightful responsibility. Because, you know, Onan refused to raise 00:38:57.550 --> 00:39:03.990 up seed to his brother, therefore God killed him. So God took this family inheritance, 00:39:03.990 --> 00:39:09.490 family name pretty seriously. So that's a biblical concept on it. Go back to Ruth, chapter 00:39:09.490 --> 00:39:17.120 4, Ruth, chapter 4. So Boaz told this near kinsman, not only, you know, you have to buy 00:39:17.120 --> 00:39:23.990 the land, but you also have to buy Ruth just to raise up the name of the dead, to raise 00:39:23.990 --> 00:39:30.920 up, you know, Elimelech's lineage, okay? Look at verse number 6, Ruth, chapter 4, verse 00:39:30.920 --> 00:39:38.040 number 6. And the kinsman said, "I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mourn my own 00:39:38.040 --> 00:39:43.970 inheritance. Redeem thou my right to thyself, for I cannot redeem it." The word mourn means 00:39:43.970 --> 00:39:51.540 to injure by cutting off a port. So the near kinsman basically said that, you know, "I 00:39:51.540 --> 00:39:57.030 cannot buy it back, because that's going to hurt my own inheritance." But it does sound 00:39:57.030 --> 00:40:01.970 like that he could have purchased Ruth, but he chose not to, because he's worried about 00:40:01.970 --> 00:40:09.570 hurting his own inheritance. Think about this. If he marries Ruth, and if they have a child, 00:40:09.570 --> 00:40:14.960 the child will be counted as Marlon's heir, not his. Right? Because the whole purpose 00:40:14.960 --> 00:40:21.990 was to raise up seed for his brother. Right? But he could also be concerned about the financial 00:40:21.990 --> 00:40:28.920 costs and dividing his own inheritance between two different families. If this man already 00:40:28.920 --> 00:40:35.050 has children and he's a widower, he may have to split inheritance with his own children 00:40:35.050 --> 00:40:44.790 and with Ruth's child. Right? And if the near kinsman didn't have any child, then this will 00:40:44.790 --> 00:40:52.120 make the situation even more costly because his son with Ruth will not carry his own name. 00:40:52.120 --> 00:40:57.390 Okay? So again, there's some sacrifice going on. Someone has to pay the cost. Okay? That's why he's 00:40:57.390 --> 00:41:04.870 concerned that's no more my own inheritance. There's a conflict of interest here. Okay? 00:41:04.870 --> 00:41:12.460 So here's a comparison. The near kinsman, I think he's able. He is concerned about his own inheritance. 00:41:12.460 --> 00:41:20.700 He's not willing, but Boaz is both able and willing. We can take a principle from this 00:41:20.700 --> 00:41:28.630 story that some people will help. Some people are able to help until it costs them something. 00:41:28.630 --> 00:41:33.820 Right? And some people will step up to serve at the church until it affects their own life. 00:41:33.820 --> 00:41:41.560 The near kinsman, he wanted the benefit, but not at the expense of his own inheritance. 00:41:42.950 --> 00:41:49.860 Because true redemption is never about protecting yourself. True redemption is 00:41:49.860 --> 00:41:55.810 about willing to pay the price. Right? And people will say they love the church, 00:41:55.810 --> 00:42:02.210 they love hard preaching until someone preach against his sin, until they are asked to serve. 00:42:02.210 --> 00:42:08.090 Right? People are faithful until it costs them their time, money, or convenience. 00:42:08.090 --> 00:42:10.970 People are always that way. They are not willing to pay the price. 00:42:12.010 --> 00:42:21.550 Come back to Proverbs 23. Proverbs 23, people will say they care about lost souls, 00:42:21.550 --> 00:42:26.790 but it never goes home with me. I mean, it's the same idea. A man may want the position, 00:42:26.790 --> 00:42:31.780 recognition, influences, but they don't want the pressure. They don't want the accountability. 00:42:31.780 --> 00:42:39.010 They don't want any sacrifice. Okay? And virtually everyone on the surface wants to be 00:42:41.030 --> 00:42:45.540 used by God until it costs them something. And if you preach the Bible, 00:42:45.540 --> 00:42:51.080 you know, be ready to face backlashes. Don't be a coward and back down when persecutions come. 00:42:51.080 --> 00:42:56.680 If you are any preacher, you know, especially preachers in the new IFB, 00:42:56.680 --> 00:43:03.040 you need to be ready to face lies, slanders, and false accusations. You know, someone said 00:43:03.040 --> 00:43:08.360 that you have to have the dog in you to be a new IFB preacher. It's a high order, right? 00:43:08.980 --> 00:43:15.950 And the typical Baptist preachers who only preach one or two verses every week, plus a bunch of 00:43:15.950 --> 00:43:23.770 stories, they don't get much heat because that's just not enough verses to trigger people. But when 00:43:23.770 --> 00:43:29.800 you preach every single verse, you will have to touch on things that actually offend people. 00:43:29.800 --> 00:43:36.420 Okay, you are in Proverbs 23, look at verse 23.
