WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:00.500
11.

00:05.460 --> 00:09.160
And follow along silently as we read the entire chapter.

00:15.320 --> 00:19.320
Mark chapter 11, the Bible reads.

00:19.320 --> 00:24.800
And when they came nigh to Jerusalem unto Bethphagi and Bethany at the Mount of Olives,

00:24.800 --> 00:30.000
And senteth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you,

00:30.000 --> 00:37.200
And as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat. Loose him, and bring him.

00:37.200 --> 00:46.800
And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? Say ye that the Lord hath need of him, and straightway he will send him hither.

00:46.800 --> 00:53.200
And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without, in a place where two ways met, and they loosed him.

00:53.200 --> 00:58.800
And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?

00:58.800 --> 01:03.500
And they said unto them, Even as Jesus had commanded, and they let them go.

01:03.500 --> 01:08.100
And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him, and he sat upon him.

01:08.100 --> 01:14.200
And many spread their garments in the way, and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.

01:14.200 --> 01:21.600
And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

01:21.600 --> 01:27.800
Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest.

01:27.800 --> 01:30.600
And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple.

01:30.600 --> 01:38.800
And when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.

01:38.800 --> 01:43.600
And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry.

01:43.600 --> 01:50.900
And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if happily, he might find anything thereon.

01:50.900 --> 01:56.300
And when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for the time of figs was not yet.

01:56.300 --> 02:01.900
And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter forever.

02:01.900 --> 02:03.900
And his disciples heard it.

02:03.900 --> 02:10.400
And they come to Jerusalem, and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple,

02:10.400 --> 02:15.700
and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

02:15.700 --> 02:20.700
and would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.

02:20.700 --> 02:27.200
And he taught saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer?

02:27.200 --> 02:30.000
But ye have made it a den of thieves.

02:30.000 --> 02:35.700
And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him, for they feared him,

02:35.700 --> 02:39.400
because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

02:39.400 --> 02:41.800
And when even was come, he went out of the city.

02:41.800 --> 02:47.500
And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

02:47.500 --> 02:55.100
And Peter calling to remembrance, saith unto him, Master, behold the fig tree which thou cursest is withered away.

02:55.100 --> 02:59.300
And Jesus answering, saith unto them, Have faith in God.

02:59.300 --> 03:04.600
For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed,

03:04.600 --> 03:11.600
and be thou cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass,

03:11.600 --> 03:14.100
he shall have whatsoever he saith.

03:14.200 --> 03:21.200
Therefore I say unto you, What think soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

03:21.200 --> 03:29.800
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any, that your father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

03:29.800 --> 03:36.100
But if ye do not forgive, neither will your father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

03:36.200 --> 03:40.800
And they come again to Jerusalem, and he was walking in the temple.

03:40.800 --> 03:45.300
There come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, and say unto him,

03:45.300 --> 03:49.000
By what authority doest thou these things?

03:49.000 --> 03:51.800
And who gave thee this authority to do these things?

03:51.800 --> 03:57.500
And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me,

03:57.500 --> 04:00.500
and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

04:00.500 --> 04:04.000
The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?

04:04.000 --> 04:05.800
Answer me.

04:05.800 --> 04:11.800
And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say from heaven, he will say, why then did ye not believe him?

04:11.800 --> 04:18.500
But if we shall say of men, they feared the people, for all men counted John that he was a prophet indeed.

04:18.500 --> 04:22.000
And they answered and said unto Jesus, we cannot tell.

04:22.000 --> 04:27.800
And Jesus answering saith unto them, neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

04:27.800 --> 04:29.100
Brother Mikey, can you please serve?

04:30.100 --> 04:39.100
Thank you Lord for this church that we have, and Lord just help us to regard it as the blessing that it is to all of us.

04:39.100 --> 04:45.600
And just bless the Lord right now, fill him with the Holy Spirit, and help him to preach your word to us.

04:45.600 --> 04:47.600
Can you stand and pray, Amen?

04:47.600 --> 04:48.600
Amen.

04:48.600 --> 04:52.600
Well it's always an honor to preach to the church here.

04:53.600 --> 04:57.600
It is of course Palm Sunday in the traditional liturgical calendar.

04:57.600 --> 05:01.600
So we've got the, what passes for a palm tree up the front here.

05:01.600 --> 05:05.600
I did my best on short notice by finding it in the back room.

05:05.600 --> 05:08.600
But it's my teaching aid here.

05:08.600 --> 05:18.600
And so, kind of a sparse crowd tonight, but Jesus preached to two guys on the road to Emmaus.

05:18.600 --> 05:21.600
So we've got a lot more than two here, so I'll take it.

05:22.600 --> 05:29.600
So as it is Palm Sunday, like I said, the verses I want to focus on are those concerning the triumphal entry into Jerusalem,

05:29.600 --> 05:36.600
and the welcome that Jesus receives from the common people with the branches, you know, the wave in the branches,

05:36.600 --> 05:44.600
they're putting them down in front of them, and even spreading out their own clothing for him, you know, making a royal carpet as it were.

05:45.600 --> 05:55.600
You know, its significance cannot be understated because while, you know, by this point Peter and others had confessed him as the Messiah,

05:55.600 --> 05:59.600
you know, to his face privately and the Savior of the world and all this,

05:59.600 --> 06:09.600
this is kind of the seminal moment where masses of people publicly acknowledge, publicly acknowledge him as a king,

06:10.600 --> 06:18.600
and specifically as the king of the Jews, the son of David, and as a capitalized, like, son of David, like he's the guy,

06:18.600 --> 06:22.600
he's the last king, the guy that's going to rule forever, right?

06:22.600 --> 06:28.600
And so this is kind of like the last straw with the Pharisees.

06:28.600 --> 06:34.600
You know, they already wanted to kill him, they'd already thought about killing him, they've already got this malice in their heart.

06:35.600 --> 06:41.600
But now this is really an inflection point where more than ever they don't really have a choice.

06:41.600 --> 06:49.600
They either have to act or they have to, or unless they continue to allow the people to follow him,

06:49.600 --> 06:55.600
which would be like a permanent loss of their own power, and of course that's what ends up happening anyway,

06:55.600 --> 07:01.600
because God wins obviously, but, you know, they're afraid that if they don't kill him at this point,

07:01.600 --> 07:04.600
you know, the people will follow him instead of them.

07:07.600 --> 07:15.600
And as they later confessed to Pilate, quote, we have no king but Caesar, you know,

07:15.600 --> 07:21.600
openly stating, and perhaps with some dissimulation because they probably didn't like Caesar that much,

07:21.600 --> 07:28.600
that they prefer to be ruled by the world and by the Gentiles rather than by the Lord's Christ.

07:29.600 --> 07:36.600
Now, while the Jews were especially wicked in such a decision, we look around the world today

07:36.600 --> 07:43.600
and a vast number of people would say similar things, you know, that in a manner of speaking,

07:43.600 --> 07:51.600
their only king is their passions, or their reason, or their king is science, or some man-made ideology,

07:51.600 --> 07:56.600
or some human government of the Gentiles, or they would just say, I have no kings at all,

07:56.600 --> 07:59.600
no kings at all, no kings protest, right?

08:01.600 --> 08:03.600
Nobody can tell me what to do.

08:05.600 --> 08:11.600
And so in Mark 11 there, the passage we're focusing on is, they brought the colt to Jesus

08:11.600 --> 08:17.600
and cast their garments on him, and he sat upon him, and many spread their garments in the way,

08:17.600 --> 08:22.600
and others cut down branches off the trees and strawed them in the way,

08:22.600 --> 08:25.600
and they that went before and they that followed cried saying,

08:25.600 --> 08:33.600
Hosanna, blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord, blessed be the kingdom of our father David

08:33.600 --> 08:38.600
that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna, in the highest.

08:38.600 --> 08:49.600
Now, Hosanna is one of those words that the King James translators chose or choose to leave untranslated, so to speak,

08:49.600 --> 08:58.600
and I looked it up, comes from the Hebrew phrase, Hosanna, basically the same word, just a transliteration,

08:58.600 --> 09:06.600
which literally means, save we pray, or please save us, some sort of thing like this asking for salvation,

09:06.600 --> 09:16.600
and it's related to the Aramaic, Oshanna, meaning save, rescue, savior, so kind of an interesting choice of words there,

09:16.600 --> 09:23.600
it's just one of those words they leave untranslated, I don't know if that's exactly why they did that,

09:23.600 --> 09:26.600
but sometimes in the King James they just leave a word, they transliterate it,

09:26.600 --> 09:31.600
like when he says, Lama, says, Bakhtani, and things like this in Aramaic.

09:31.600 --> 09:40.600
Now, obviously a crowd of people shouting something to the effect of save us we pray to Jesus,

09:40.600 --> 09:49.600
that has a lot of symbolic significance, but I think maybe one of the reasons the translators left it as Hosanna,

09:49.600 --> 09:55.600
they didn't want to confuse the reader that everyone on the road to Jerusalem is just getting saved in mass,

09:55.600 --> 10:02.600
calling on the name of the Lord, like this mass Romans 10 moment, where they're all just, everybody on the side of the road is getting saved,

10:03.600 --> 10:08.600
because maybe some of them were, because Jesus is getting people saved everywhere he goes,

10:08.600 --> 10:15.600
but the great bulk of the people are not just having a come to Jesus moment in the literal Romans 10 sense,

10:15.600 --> 10:19.600
just because they're saying Hosanna, so we don't want to confuse the reader perhaps.

10:19.600 --> 10:29.600
Now, again, no doubt people were getting saved to some degree anywhere that Jesus went,

10:29.600 --> 10:34.600
but the cultural connotation here is more of a request to earthly royalty,

10:34.600 --> 10:41.600
to a King of David's line to help the people, to give them their freedom from the Romans, etc.

10:41.600 --> 10:49.600
This is obviously what most Jews are expecting as an earthly king, to give them an earthly salvation,

10:49.600 --> 10:58.600
and one reason we can deduce this is that some of these same people would just a few days later be consenting unto his death

10:58.600 --> 11:01.600
when the tides of public opinion turned, right?

11:01.600 --> 11:08.600
The crowds are inherently fickle and can be manipulated, they're a sheep having no shepherd.

11:10.600 --> 11:19.600
Now, so Palm Sunday, likewise, is celebrated in virtually every professing Christian tradition,

11:19.600 --> 11:23.600
Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and on down the line,

11:24.600 --> 11:32.600
and yet, much like the crowds welcoming Jesus, it's a significantly smaller percentage within that number

11:32.600 --> 11:36.600
who actually understand the spiritual nature of his kingship, right?

11:36.600 --> 11:43.600
So many people have strong emotional aspects to their religion, you know?

11:43.600 --> 11:48.600
I mean, the jumping and shouting Pentecostal comes to mind when you think of emotion, right?

11:48.600 --> 11:57.600
And many people in this world, they like Jesus, they like Jesus in his meek estate of condescending to the poor

11:57.600 --> 12:02.600
or aiding the sick, as many churches historically have made effort to do,

12:02.600 --> 12:10.600
and people see or they want the benefits from God or from Christian living, right?

12:10.600 --> 12:18.600
You know, in the extreme case, like the health and wealth, prosperity preachers want the benefits that God might give them,

12:18.600 --> 12:21.600
but there's many more, they just see the benefit from clean living,

12:21.600 --> 12:25.600
they want God to provide various things to them through prayer,

12:25.600 --> 12:31.600
or maybe they want to get things transactionally from God by giving money or time, right?

12:31.600 --> 12:37.600
I mean, in the most extreme sense, like Catholics think you can just buy time out of purgatory or something.

12:37.600 --> 12:44.600
And so one may engage all these things as a member of the crowd, shouting at Jesus and waving palms

12:44.600 --> 12:49.600
without truly having made him king in their heart,

12:49.600 --> 12:54.600
and specifically a king whose death on the cross is their salvation,

12:54.600 --> 13:01.600
as opposed to the temporal salvation he might provide them with things or with blessings,

13:01.600 --> 13:06.600
or a salvation they might earn for themselves through offering works unto him.

13:06.600 --> 13:10.600
So many people may say, Hosanna, please save us,

13:10.600 --> 13:17.600
without their heart actually being in that Romans 10 position where confession is made unto salvation.

13:17.600 --> 13:20.600
The Puritan Thomas Watson said, quote,

13:20.600 --> 13:26.600
So basically emotional excitement about Jesus is not saving faith.

13:26.600 --> 13:32.600
You know, love of Christ's glory even is not always the same as an embrace

13:32.600 --> 13:37.600
and identification with his shame and humiliation on the cross.

13:37.600 --> 13:36.480
And public

13:36.480 --> 13:44.600
and private love is not always the same as an embrace and identification with his shame and humiliation on the cross.

13:45.600 --> 13:50.600
And public confession is not always private conversion.

13:50.600 --> 13:55.600
And so let a man examine himself, whether he has been crucified with Christ,

13:55.600 --> 14:00.600
whether he's seeking some temporary fulfillment he can get from him.

14:00.600 --> 14:04.600
And, you know, we should all examine ourselves.

14:04.600 --> 14:07.600
I think everyone in this room is probably saved with a small crowd tonight.

14:07.600 --> 14:11.600
But if I'm preaching this to you, I'm sure you'll be able to hear me.

14:12.600 --> 14:17.600
If I'm preaching this evangelical evangelicalically to the whole world on the Internet,

14:17.600 --> 14:20.600
let someone examine themselves.

14:20.600 --> 14:26.600
Do you just want to wave songs of wave palms at Christ with the crowd?

14:26.600 --> 14:33.600
Or do you actually want to follow him to the cross to suffer with him and to be born again?

14:33.600 --> 14:38.600
So, yes, there's merit in glorifying the triumphal Christ.

14:38.600 --> 14:41.520
It was right for them to wave the palms out of him to say,

14:41.520 --> 14:43.600
Hosanna, right?

14:43.600 --> 14:46.000
But there's no salvation spiritually outside

14:46.000 --> 14:48.080
his death on the cross, the thing that comes later,

14:48.080 --> 14:52.880
the thing that way fewer people wanted to be a part of.

14:52.880 --> 14:55.480
His strength is made perfect in weakness.

14:55.480 --> 14:58.040
And that's not, people don't want to be weak.

14:58.040 --> 14:59.600
They want to save themselves.

14:59.600 --> 15:03.720
They want a king to save them temporarily speaking.

15:03.760 --> 15:10.760
And so yes, he's king, but he's also the lamb sacrificed.

15:10.760 --> 15:12.720
His kingship's inherent in his nature,

15:12.720 --> 15:17.760
but the sacrifice he made for us was voluntary.

15:17.760 --> 15:19.360
Our inherent nature, on the other hand,

15:19.360 --> 15:21.200
is one of a sinner.

15:21.200 --> 15:23.760
And so we must voluntarily admit weakness in accepting

15:23.760 --> 15:26.720
Christ's sacrifice on our behalf.

15:26.720 --> 15:29.080
We can't pay our sin debt through worship

15:29.080 --> 15:30.640
by shouting, Hosanna.

15:30.640 --> 15:32.080
We cannot say we're converted just

15:32.080 --> 15:36.160
because we're in the crowd of worshipers, right?

15:36.160 --> 15:38.720
Upwards of a billion people may well

15:38.720 --> 15:40.680
lift up Christ's good name today,

15:40.680 --> 15:44.520
but conversion is another matter.

15:44.520 --> 15:47.880
And most people, unfortunately, will never

15:47.880 --> 15:51.480
place their entire hope of salvation in the cross.

15:51.480 --> 15:54.360
They'll still hold back some role for themselves

15:54.360 --> 15:57.640
and their works, their willpower to stay saved.

15:57.640 --> 16:00.960
And they're seeking to split the power in the kingdom

16:00.960 --> 16:03.120
between themselves and Christ.

16:03.120 --> 16:06.240
They will not have him to rule over them.

16:06.240 --> 16:08.720
But when a man looks to Jesus for salvation,

16:08.720 --> 16:12.560
he must allow Jesus to be king in all respects,

16:12.560 --> 16:15.320
king of earning that salvation through his perfect life

16:15.320 --> 16:18.560
and death, but also the king of keeping it

16:18.560 --> 16:20.360
through his eternal power.

16:20.360 --> 16:23.160
Like his brother, Ramon, was preaching this morning,

16:23.160 --> 16:24.680
I wrote down Romans 6.

16:24.680 --> 16:26.200
He was preaching all through Romans 6,

16:26.200 --> 16:29.920
and it's like it's so apropos to this.

16:30.840 --> 16:33.120
Christ doesn't just have the triumphal entry.

16:33.120 --> 16:35.280
We also have to be planted together

16:35.280 --> 16:37.480
in the likeness of his death, your old man

16:37.480 --> 16:38.680
crucified with him.

16:38.680 --> 16:41.400
It says, reckon yourselves also to be dead.

16:41.400 --> 16:44.200
These phrases in Romans 6 just emphasizing

16:44.200 --> 16:47.880
that the believer, in some sense, has to die with Christ.

16:47.880 --> 16:50.080
This is less appealing than having

16:50.080 --> 16:53.480
a triumphal entry with Christ.

16:53.480 --> 16:56.640
But again, because brought up this morning,

16:56.640 --> 16:59.560
the apostles in the early church rejoiced

16:59.560 --> 17:01.600
when they're persecuted.

17:02.640 --> 17:05.680
The crowd did not rejoice when Jesus was persecuted.

17:05.680 --> 17:08.040
They switched sides, they went to the easy side.

17:10.080 --> 17:13.880
So the triumphal entry, it's an event

17:13.880 --> 17:15.600
that's recorded in all four gospels.

17:15.600 --> 17:18.040
So whenever something's in all four of the gospels,

17:18.040 --> 17:19.080
you kind of take a mental note,

17:19.080 --> 17:20.720
like wow, this is pretty important.

17:20.720 --> 17:22.280
This is kind of like, it's leading up

17:22.280 --> 17:23.680
to the climax of the gospel.

17:23.680 --> 17:26.480
This is like right before the final scene in the movie.

17:27.040 --> 17:32.040
And then when you look closer in all four of those cases,

17:32.200 --> 17:35.480
there's still quite a lot of material afterwards

17:35.480 --> 17:37.240
in those gospels.

17:37.240 --> 17:41.320
So like this is in Mark 11, he's making the triumphal entry.

17:41.320 --> 17:42.560
There's still a lot of bark.

17:42.560 --> 17:44.080
You get all the way to 16.

17:45.840 --> 17:48.680
But that's just the last week of Jesus' life.

17:48.680 --> 17:53.120
So it's like a huge chunk of the gospels

17:53.120 --> 17:56.120
is just like the last week of Jesus' life.

17:56.320 --> 17:59.320
Imagine if you did that proportionally,

17:59.320 --> 18:02.720
the gospel would be like thousands of pages long.

18:02.720 --> 18:06.000
But this week is clearly, this is the focal point.

18:09.520 --> 18:12.920
Like Paul says, I determined not to know anything among you

18:12.920 --> 18:15.360
save Jesus Christ and him crucified.

18:15.360 --> 18:20.360
This is leading up to the focal point of the gospels.

18:21.320 --> 18:22.800
When Pilate's examining him, it says,

18:22.800 --> 18:26.080
Pilate therefore said unto him, art thou a king then?

18:27.080 --> 18:28.960
Jesus answered, thou sayest that I am a king.

18:28.960 --> 18:32.280
To this end was I born and for this cause

18:32.280 --> 18:34.200
came I into the world that I should bear witness

18:34.200 --> 18:35.880
unto the truth.

18:35.880 --> 18:37.600
Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.

18:37.600 --> 18:39.280
So this is the end to which he's born.

18:39.280 --> 18:42.120
This is why he came into the world.

18:42.120 --> 18:46.680
That's why the gospels, there's almost like

18:46.680 --> 18:48.800
an equal amount of like the last week of his life

18:48.800 --> 18:50.400
and like the first 30 years of his life,

18:50.400 --> 18:53.000
which is quite interesting.

18:53.040 --> 18:56.760
And so the crucifixion, his arrest,

18:56.760 --> 18:59.240
his torturous crucifixion, his resurrection,

18:59.240 --> 19:03.520
that's the core of why Jesus was manifest in the flesh

19:03.520 --> 19:06.680
in 1 John 3 and you know that he was manifested

19:06.680 --> 19:09.360
to take away our sins.

19:09.360 --> 19:12.280
He was manifested to do other things too,

19:12.280 --> 19:14.520
to preach righteousness and to teach us

19:14.520 --> 19:16.840
how to live and stuff, but a lot of that stuff

19:16.840 --> 19:17.800
was already in the law.

19:17.800 --> 19:19.960
Like when he preached, he was basically just saying like,

19:19.960 --> 19:22.320
hey, if you distill down the law,

19:22.320 --> 19:25.240
it's love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

19:25.240 --> 19:27.240
But you could have already gotten that

19:27.240 --> 19:29.760
from studying the law if you were a master of the law

19:29.760 --> 19:30.920
in Israel.

19:30.920 --> 19:33.600
And there were people living when he came on the scene

19:33.600 --> 19:35.640
like John the Baptist and other believers

19:37.680 --> 19:39.920
that already knew that stuff.

19:39.920 --> 19:42.520
I mean, there's Anna in the temple,

19:42.520 --> 19:43.880
already knows there's a Christ coming,

19:43.880 --> 19:45.680
already understands these things.

19:47.200 --> 19:50.880
His main purpose was to take away our sins

19:50.920 --> 19:53.480
and it's therefore important to keep in mind

19:56.240 --> 20:00.520
also that none of the events in Jesus' entry into Jerusalem,

20:00.520 --> 20:02.560
his arrest, his trial, his passion,

20:02.560 --> 20:04.760
these were not surprises to him.

20:05.760 --> 20:08.040
As though he's just like this nice guy

20:08.040 --> 20:09.840
going along about his business

20:09.840 --> 20:11.360
and then these evil people come in

20:11.360 --> 20:12.880
and they're more sneaky than him

20:12.880 --> 20:14.800
and they take him off guard.

20:14.800 --> 20:16.960
That's how the world might look at it.

20:17.280 --> 20:21.240
But while the things his enemies did to him

20:21.240 --> 20:23.880
were evil and unjust and terrible,

20:23.880 --> 20:26.120
he was still in control.

20:26.120 --> 20:28.240
He's the sovereign of a kingdom.

20:28.240 --> 20:30.920
It's just operating on a different level,

20:30.920 --> 20:34.160
on a higher level than his adversaries understood.

20:34.160 --> 20:37.920
Every detail of this whole process was planned out

20:37.920 --> 20:40.040
down to the exact donkey.

20:40.040 --> 20:43.040
He's like, go get that donkey from that town.

20:43.040 --> 20:45.160
They're gonna know you're coming.

20:45.200 --> 20:48.320
He already knows which disciples gonna betray him

20:48.320 --> 20:51.560
for how many coins, everything, right?

20:54.560 --> 20:57.560
Says, like this morning, for we must needs die

20:57.560 --> 21:01.240
yet he doth devise means that is banished

21:01.240 --> 21:03.480
be not expelled from him.

21:03.480 --> 21:05.760
He devised all these means

21:05.760 --> 21:09.080
and worked together this miraculous event.

21:09.080 --> 21:14.080
Now, heard a lot of Palm Sunday messages growing up

21:14.080 --> 21:15.440
and they usually just kind of emphasize

21:15.440 --> 21:17.600
like the donkey and the palms

21:17.600 --> 21:20.880
and like, you know, how it's humble to come in on a donkey.

21:20.880 --> 21:22.200
You could preach a whole sermon about that.

21:22.200 --> 21:24.040
How Jesus was humble and meek and lowly

21:24.040 --> 21:26.880
and he came in on the donkey instead of on the horse.

21:26.880 --> 21:29.480
And so he was kind of like a paradoxical king.

21:29.480 --> 21:31.880
It's not what people expected, that sort of thing.

21:34.840 --> 21:37.000
I wanted to be a little bit different, right?

21:37.040 --> 21:38.840
One thing I wanted to look at is I wanted to walk

21:38.840 --> 21:41.280
through some of the interesting geography

21:41.280 --> 21:44.360
leading up to the triumphal entry.

21:44.360 --> 21:46.960
So if you just go back a couple of pages to Mark 9,

21:49.600 --> 21:50.840
Mark 9, 31.

21:56.000 --> 21:58.600
Says, for he taught his disciples and said unto them,

21:59.920 --> 22:03.640
the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of men

22:03.640 --> 22:04.920
and they shall kill him.

22:05.400 --> 22:07.640
Into the hands of men and they shall kill him.

22:08.680 --> 22:11.920
And after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

22:11.920 --> 22:14.160
So this is the, it's not just even foreshadowing.

22:14.160 --> 22:15.840
He's just telling them what's gonna happen

22:15.840 --> 22:17.280
and they still don't get it.

22:18.640 --> 22:21.360
So kind of incredible, but I mean,

22:21.360 --> 22:23.160
it's not something that had ever happened before.

22:23.160 --> 22:24.800
So you can't blame him too much.

22:25.720 --> 22:29.240
And so this is the foreshadowing.

22:29.240 --> 22:30.800
He's telling them what's gonna happen.

22:30.800 --> 22:33.880
And this, by the way, shows that Jesus is either exactly

22:33.880 --> 22:36.840
who he says he is or he's totally just an insane

22:36.840 --> 22:40.680
suicidal madman, because he knows he's gonna go die.

22:42.320 --> 22:44.160
And he's also, you know he's a prophet

22:44.160 --> 22:46.640
because he tells you exactly how it's gonna happen.

22:46.640 --> 22:48.720
And it says, but they understood not that saying

22:48.720 --> 22:50.880
and were afraid to ask him.

22:50.880 --> 22:54.320
Verse 33, and he came to Capernaum

22:54.320 --> 22:56.720
and being in the house they asked him, et cetera.

22:56.720 --> 23:00.920
So he came to Capernaum, so he's up in Galilee.

23:00.920 --> 23:02.160
So we've located him.

23:02.200 --> 23:04.560
Capernaum's on the north coast of Galilee.

23:04.560 --> 23:07.440
He's kind of in like northern Israel,

23:07.440 --> 23:09.440
like almost to like Syria.

23:11.840 --> 23:14.800
And then in Mark 10, one, so we're gonna track his journey

23:14.800 --> 23:16.520
down to Jerusalem.

23:16.520 --> 23:19.080
So we're starting at Capernaum, up by the Sea of Galilee,

23:19.080 --> 23:22.120
not that far from, you know, he's a Galilean, right?

23:23.160 --> 23:27.840
Then Mark 10, one, and he arose from thence

23:27.840 --> 23:30.560
and cometh into the coast of Judea

23:30.600 --> 23:33.400
by the farther side of Jordan,

23:33.400 --> 23:35.560
and the people resort unto him again,

23:35.560 --> 23:39.360
and as he was wont, he taught them again.

23:39.360 --> 23:42.320
So the farther side of Jordan is talking about

23:42.320 --> 23:45.960
the east side of Jordan, outside of core Israel,

23:45.960 --> 23:48.040
outside the land of Canaan.

23:48.040 --> 23:50.760
And this is really fascinating, right?

23:51.600 --> 23:54.080
Because now he's in the position of the children of Israel

23:54.080 --> 23:57.120
right before they crossed into the promised land.

23:57.120 --> 24:00.360
Because where is he going to come in

24:00.360 --> 24:01.520
right before the triumphal entry?

24:01.520 --> 24:05.240
He's gonna cross the Jordan into Jericho,

24:05.240 --> 24:08.680
and then go down to Jerusalem, this exact path

24:08.680 --> 24:13.040
that Joshua leads the children into the promised land

24:13.040 --> 24:16.240
through that Moses couldn't do, right?

24:16.240 --> 24:18.680
Because the law came by Moses,

24:18.680 --> 24:20.880
but Moses wasn't allowed to enter into the promised land.

24:20.880 --> 24:22.800
Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

24:22.800 --> 24:27.000
Jesus Christ crosses the Jordan this last time

24:27.000 --> 24:29.120
before he goes to be crucified

24:29.160 --> 24:31.320
to win sort of the promised land eternally,

24:31.320 --> 24:32.440
speaking for everybody.

24:37.240 --> 24:40.400
But then the Pharisees came to him, right?

24:41.400 --> 24:45.400
They're out there on the other side of Jordan hounding him.

24:45.400 --> 24:48.080
The Pharisees came to him and asked him,

24:48.080 --> 24:52.200
is it lawful for man to put away his wife, tempting him?

24:53.280 --> 24:54.680
And he answered and said unto them,

24:54.680 --> 24:56.800
what did Moses command you?

24:56.800 --> 24:59.000
This is fascinating, right?

24:59.880 --> 25:02.160
He's right at sort of like Moses' last pit stop.

25:03.040 --> 25:08.040
And the Jews are still quizzing him on what did Moses say?

25:08.160 --> 25:10.640
And he's like, you guys still don't get it.

25:10.640 --> 25:13.000
What did Moses tell you, right?

25:15.600 --> 25:17.960
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

25:17.960 --> 25:20.840
even so the son of man must be lifted up.

25:20.840 --> 25:22.240
That's something Moses did for him

25:22.240 --> 25:23.640
that they didn't understand.

25:25.440 --> 25:27.960
Deuteronomy four, Moses, he's told

25:28.640 --> 25:29.720
he can't go over.

25:33.840 --> 25:35.480
But Moses tells him, what does Moses tell him?

25:35.480 --> 25:38.960
He says, one day one of your brethren will become a prophet

25:38.960 --> 25:41.720
and to him you need to trust and if you don't trust him,

25:41.720 --> 25:43.520
you'll be destroyed, right?

25:43.520 --> 25:45.160
What did he tell him earlier in John?

25:45.160 --> 25:47.640
Do not think that I will accuse you to the father.

25:47.640 --> 25:49.880
There is one that accuseth you, even Moses,

25:49.880 --> 25:53.200
in whom you trust, for had you believed Moses,

25:53.200 --> 25:55.560
you would have believed me, for he wrote of me.

25:55.560 --> 25:56.920
But if you believe not his writings,

25:56.920 --> 25:59.040
how shall you believe my words?

25:59.040 --> 26:01.960
So he's done miracles, he's fulfilled prophecies,

26:01.960 --> 26:04.120
he's walked on water, he's healed the leper,

26:04.120 --> 26:05.960
healed the blind and the sick,

26:05.960 --> 26:08.320
he's preached the kingdom of God

26:08.320 --> 26:11.080
and there's still Pharisees just coming up to him

26:11.080 --> 26:12.360
and they're like, well what did Moses say

26:12.360 --> 26:14.800
about me getting another wife?

26:14.800 --> 26:18.040
It's like, where's your brain at, like at this point?

26:18.040 --> 26:19.760
Like that's what you're worried about

26:19.760 --> 26:22.280
and this is the case today, it's like,

26:22.280 --> 26:24.120
you bring the kingdom of God to someone,

26:24.120 --> 26:25.440
the message of salvation, they're like,

26:25.480 --> 26:27.480
well what do you think about gay marriage?

26:28.480 --> 26:31.480
It's like, what do you think about going to hell?

26:31.480 --> 26:33.360
Like, I mean, like this is,

26:33.360 --> 26:36.080
like we've got more important things to worry about.

26:36.080 --> 26:38.920
Like they're disputing about the law

26:38.920 --> 26:42.520
and he's like, you don't even believe Moses.

26:44.920 --> 26:49.040
It will turn to Deuteronomy 18.

26:55.440 --> 26:56.280
Yeah, yeah.

26:58.280 --> 27:00.440
Yeah, Deuteronomy 18.15,

27:00.440 --> 27:04.400
the Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet

27:04.400 --> 27:08.240
from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me,

27:08.240 --> 27:10.800
unto him shall ye hearken according to all

27:10.800 --> 27:13.360
that thou desirest of the Lord thy God in Horeb

27:13.360 --> 27:15.280
in the day of the assembly saying,

27:15.280 --> 27:18.160
let me not hear again the voice of the Lord

27:18.160 --> 27:22.080
and the Lord thy God in the day of the assembly saying,

27:23.000 --> 27:26.240
let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God,

27:26.240 --> 27:30.240
neither let me see this great fire anymore that I die not.

27:30.240 --> 27:32.240
And the Lord said unto me, they have well spoken

27:32.240 --> 27:34.480
for that which they have spoken.

27:34.480 --> 27:37.800
I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren

27:37.800 --> 27:40.960
like unto thee and will put my words in his mouth

27:40.960 --> 27:42.800
and shall speak unto them all that I commanded him.

27:42.800 --> 27:45.440
So the Jews, they told Moses,

27:45.440 --> 27:47.800
we don't wanna hear this voice from heaven anymore,

27:47.800 --> 27:49.240
we're too scared of it.

27:49.240 --> 27:51.600
God says, all right, I'll make a prophet

27:51.600 --> 27:54.600
that's a man like you and he'll tell you these things.

27:54.600 --> 27:58.560
And then when he shows up, they still reject him anyway.

27:59.440 --> 28:02.080
And that's what it says in verse 19 here,

28:02.080 --> 28:05.080
and it shall come to pass that whosoever will not hearken

28:05.080 --> 28:08.100
unto my words which he shall speak in my name,

28:08.100 --> 28:10.160
I will require it of him.

28:14.680 --> 28:17.920
And again, what's interesting is that in Numbers 33,

28:19.600 --> 28:20.560
you can turn there if you want,

28:20.560 --> 28:24.600
Numbers 33 and verse 50, it says,

28:25.520 --> 28:26.360
and this is interesting,

28:26.360 --> 28:28.120
because they're quizzing about Moses

28:28.120 --> 28:31.960
on the far side of Jordan near Jericho, right?

28:31.960 --> 28:34.000
And in Numbers 33 and verse 50, it says,

28:34.000 --> 28:38.660
and the Lord spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab

28:38.660 --> 28:41.240
by Jordan near Jericho.

28:41.240 --> 28:44.200
So this is like pretty much the same physical location,

28:44.200 --> 28:45.560
right?

28:45.560 --> 28:48.520
Saying, speak unto the children of Israel

28:48.520 --> 28:51.880
and saying to them, when ye are passed over Jordan

28:51.880 --> 28:55.560
into the land of Canaan, then ye shall drive out

28:55.560 --> 28:58.440
all the inhabitants of the land from before you

28:58.440 --> 29:00.480
and destroy all their pictures

29:00.480 --> 29:02.560
and destroy all their molten images

29:02.560 --> 29:06.360
and quite pluck down all their high places

29:06.360 --> 29:11.240
and ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land.

29:11.240 --> 29:15.540
And what is Jesus going to prophesy

29:15.540 --> 29:18.360
after he enters into Jerusalem in Mark 13,

29:19.200 --> 29:21.320
and he's going to say, Jesus answering said unto him,

29:21.320 --> 29:24.480
seest thou these great buildings,

29:24.480 --> 29:27.760
there shall not be left one stone upon another

29:27.760 --> 29:29.960
that shall not be thrown down.

29:29.960 --> 29:33.640
So God tells Moses, hey, when Joshua,

29:33.640 --> 29:36.640
which is Jesus, right, in the Hebrew,

29:36.640 --> 29:41.320
goes across this river, you're going to destroy everything

29:41.320 --> 29:43.920
and you're going to dispossess those people.

29:43.920 --> 29:47.920
And when Jesus crosses over and goes in unto his death,

29:48.280 --> 29:50.440
before that happens, he tells his disciples,

29:50.440 --> 29:52.120
all these stones are going to be torn down

29:52.120 --> 29:53.280
and these people are going to be scattered

29:53.280 --> 29:56.520
the whole world over because they wouldn't harken unto me.

29:56.520 --> 30:00.840
And so the Jews that had dispossessed the Canaanites

30:00.840 --> 30:03.200
have become sort of like the Canaanites.

30:03.200 --> 30:04.940
And since they won't harken to God,

30:04.940 --> 30:06.200
they have to be scattered.

30:09.200 --> 30:14.200
And in Mark 10, there's more foreshadowing

30:14.200 --> 30:19.200
where he says, for the son of man came not to be ministered

30:20.120 --> 30:22.920
unto, but to minister and to give his life a ransom

30:22.920 --> 30:24.240
for many.

30:24.240 --> 30:27.520
And so this is like the greatest literature ever written,

30:27.520 --> 30:31.440
like all the suspense building up to the crucifixion.

30:31.440 --> 30:35.000
If the gospel weren't true, it would be the ramblings

30:35.000 --> 30:38.720
of madmen who were following a suicidal madman.

30:38.720 --> 30:40.840
It just, it wouldn't make sense that it would work out

30:40.840 --> 30:44.720
to be like the finest, utilizing like the best

30:44.720 --> 30:48.800
literary techniques in history.

30:49.680 --> 30:52.320
You get better plot development in five pages

30:52.320 --> 30:56.240
of the gospels than you do in like 500 pages of a novel.

30:57.080 --> 30:58.040
That's just a fact.

30:58.040 --> 31:01.400
Like any, like even like secular English literature,

31:01.400 --> 31:02.560
people will say that.

31:05.420 --> 31:10.420
And then what's also interesting in Mark 10 here,

31:11.340 --> 31:13.140
right before the triumphal entry,

31:16.260 --> 31:18.060
let me get turned back there myself.

31:26.140 --> 31:30.060
Yeah, so he's talking about kingship in verse 10, 42.

31:31.580 --> 31:34.540
You know that they which are accounted to rule over

31:34.540 --> 31:37.100
the Gentiles exercise lordship over them,

31:37.100 --> 31:39.220
and their great ones exercise authority unto them,

31:39.220 --> 31:41.700
but it shall not be among you,

31:41.700 --> 31:44.420
but whosoever will be great among you shall be your minister,

31:44.420 --> 31:46.740
and whosoever of you will be the chiefest

31:46.740 --> 31:49.740
shall be servant of all, for even the Son of Man

31:49.740 --> 31:52.180
came not to be ministered unto you, but to minister,

31:52.180 --> 31:55.100
and to give his life a ransom for many.

31:55.100 --> 31:56.300
So he's a different kind of king.

31:56.300 --> 31:59.440
He's a servant king.

31:59.440 --> 32:02.420
And, but then they're going on their way

32:03.420 --> 32:08.420
as they came to Jericho.

32:09.100 --> 32:11.700
And as he went out of Jericho with his disciples

32:11.700 --> 32:14.460
and a great number of people blind Bartimaeus,

32:14.460 --> 32:17.620
the son of Timaeus sat by the highway side begging.

32:17.620 --> 32:20.580
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,

32:20.580 --> 32:22.060
he began to cry out and say,

32:22.060 --> 32:25.060
Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.

32:25.060 --> 32:28.760
Notice it's capitalized, son of David.

32:28.800 --> 32:32.360
So Jesus' kingship, his royal lineage,

32:32.360 --> 32:35.080
his right to be the king of Israel

32:35.080 --> 32:39.040
is first openly declared by a blind beggar

32:39.040 --> 32:40.320
on the side of the road.

32:41.200 --> 32:44.320
It's just, it's so topsy-turvy, right,

32:44.320 --> 32:46.720
to how the world would do things.

32:46.720 --> 32:49.800
And what does the guy do?

32:49.800 --> 32:51.920
They tell him, hey, be quiet,

32:51.920 --> 32:55.720
but Jesus tells him, you know, tell him to come over.

32:55.720 --> 32:57.840
It says, and he, casting away his garment,

32:57.840 --> 32:59.640
rose and came to Jesus.

32:59.640 --> 33:01.360
So he casts aside his garment.

33:01.360 --> 33:02.920
What does this represent, right?

33:02.920 --> 33:04.200
He's a blind beggar.

33:04.200 --> 33:08.480
He's casting aside his garment, his filthy rags, right?

33:08.480 --> 33:11.480
His apron of fig leaves, right?

33:11.480 --> 33:13.560
He's exchanging it for the white robe

33:13.560 --> 33:15.200
of Christ's righteousness,

33:15.200 --> 33:17.120
the coat of skins from Genesis

33:17.120 --> 33:21.160
that comes from God's sacrifice, not man's works.

33:21.160 --> 33:23.460
Jesus is about to sacrifice himself.

33:23.460 --> 33:28.460
This blind beggar throws away his own garment

33:28.580 --> 33:32.020
and comes to Jesus to receive his sight.

33:33.260 --> 33:38.260
And it says he immediately received his sight from Christ

33:39.300 --> 33:41.460
by calling on the name of the Lord, right?

33:42.340 --> 33:43.900
So Jesus said unto him, go thy way,

33:43.900 --> 33:45.100
thy faith is made the whole,

33:45.100 --> 33:47.460
and immediately he received his sight

33:47.460 --> 33:49.300
and followed Jesus in the way.

33:49.300 --> 33:51.460
So he immediately receives his sight

33:51.460 --> 33:53.100
by calling on the name of the Lord.

33:53.100 --> 33:55.100
Then he followed.

33:55.100 --> 33:58.540
He did not follow in order that he might eventually

33:58.540 --> 33:59.980
receive his sight, right?

34:06.420 --> 34:09.380
And this prefigures how the people

34:09.380 --> 34:13.500
that are going to declare Christ as king

34:13.500 --> 34:16.420
for the whole world are basically

34:16.420 --> 34:19.060
people who were once blind beggars,

34:19.060 --> 34:21.620
and they had to give up their own garment, right?

34:23.820 --> 34:28.820
Then in Mark 11, our chapter,

34:28.860 --> 34:30.420
where does it start off geographically?

34:30.420 --> 34:35.420
Because remember, we started in Galilee at Capernaum,

34:35.500 --> 34:38.420
we came down the west side of the Jordan River,

34:38.420 --> 34:39.900
and we've crossed over to Jericho

34:39.900 --> 34:43.620
like the Children of Israel did many centuries before,

34:43.620 --> 34:46.820
and now we're over here in Mark 11,

34:46.820 --> 34:48.780
at the Mount of Olives.

34:48.780 --> 34:51.340
So I mean, what does this,

34:51.340 --> 34:52.640
this calls to mind the end times.

34:52.640 --> 34:56.320
This is where Christ is gonna return the second time.

34:57.480 --> 35:00.440
So, and then who does he send out?

35:00.440 --> 35:02.800
Says, at the Mount of Olives,

35:02.800 --> 35:05.840
he sendeth forth two of his disciples,

35:05.840 --> 35:07.480
and who does he send out?

35:07.480 --> 35:10.760
You know, the two witnesses, right?

35:10.760 --> 35:11.960
So you've got the Mount of Olives,

35:11.960 --> 35:14.800
you've got two disciples, like the two witnesses.

35:14.800 --> 35:15.960
It's fascinating, right?

35:15.960 --> 35:17.600
All the parallels in the Bible

35:18.520 --> 35:19.760
and how it all fits together.

35:19.760 --> 35:21.240
You couldn't contrive that.

35:23.040 --> 35:28.040
And then, you know, they spread their garments,

35:29.640 --> 35:32.120
they cut down the branches and they make a way for him.

35:32.120 --> 35:37.120
Okay, but another interesting Old Testament,

35:37.120 --> 35:42.120
Jericho palm tree connection is in Second Chronicles 28.

35:43.800 --> 35:46.400
Second Chronicles 28, I realize this more of like a

35:48.240 --> 35:49.520
Bible study than anything,

35:49.520 --> 35:52.580
but I found some of these things really interesting.

35:54.760 --> 35:56.520
Second Chronicles 28.

36:00.960 --> 36:05.800
So the scene in Second Chronicles 28 is you have King Ahaz,

36:05.800 --> 36:07.360
who's like this jerk.

36:08.280 --> 36:11.520
It says he did not that which was right

36:11.520 --> 36:14.060
in the sight of the Lord like David his father.

36:14.060 --> 36:16.100
So he's setting up idols,

36:16.100 --> 36:19.580
and he's burning incense in the high places.

36:19.580 --> 36:24.580
And this is at the time when Israel and Judah are divided,

36:25.060 --> 36:28.860
and they're fighting each other,

36:28.860 --> 36:30.460
and they're also under God's judgment,

36:30.460 --> 36:32.820
so other people are invading them at the same time

36:32.820 --> 36:34.420
that they're fighting each other.

36:37.580 --> 36:42.580
It says in verse eight, Second Chronicles 28,

36:43.020 --> 36:45.980
and the children of Israel, so that's the Northern Kingdom,

36:46.860 --> 36:51.860
carried away captive of their brethren 200,000 women,

36:51.980 --> 36:55.900
sons and daughters, and took also away much spoil from them

36:55.900 --> 36:57.940
and brought the spoil to Samaria.

36:59.220 --> 37:03.200
But a prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded,

37:03.200 --> 37:05.820
and he went out before the host that came to Samaria

37:05.820 --> 37:08.580
and said to them, Behold, because the Lord God

37:08.580 --> 37:11.900
of your fathers was wrought with Judah,

37:11.900 --> 37:14.340
he hath delivered them into your hand,

37:14.380 --> 37:16.020
and ye have slain them in a rage

37:16.020 --> 37:18.460
that reacheth up unto heaven.

37:18.460 --> 37:20.820
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah

37:20.820 --> 37:24.260
and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you?

37:24.260 --> 37:26.900
But are they not with you,

37:26.900 --> 37:29.620
even with you sins against the Lord your God?

37:30.900 --> 37:32.540
So the prophet is saying like,

37:32.540 --> 37:35.060
hey, we don't wanna keep Judah and Jerusalem

37:35.060 --> 37:36.820
as bondmen and bondwomen.

37:36.820 --> 37:38.780
This is sort of the mission of Jesus,

37:39.700 --> 37:42.500
that they wouldn't be bondmen to the law, right?

37:42.540 --> 37:44.620
So you'll start to see this parallel develop.

37:44.620 --> 37:46.940
And the prophet says, now hear me therefore,

37:46.940 --> 37:48.480
and deliver the captives again,

37:48.480 --> 37:51.100
which ye have taken captive of your brethren,

37:51.100 --> 37:53.840
for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.

37:54.780 --> 37:57.220
Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim,

37:57.220 --> 37:59.300
Azariah the son of Joanan,

38:00.740 --> 38:04.860
Barakiah the son of Meshalumoth,

38:04.860 --> 38:07.620
and Sekiah the son of Shalom,

38:07.620 --> 38:10.900
and Amasa the son of Hadlyah stood up against them.

38:10.900 --> 38:13.540
They came from the war and said unto them,

38:13.540 --> 38:16.740
ye shall not bring in the captive Sither,

38:16.740 --> 38:19.220
for as we have offended against the Lord already,

38:19.220 --> 38:22.700
ye intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass,

38:22.700 --> 38:24.060
for our trespass is great

38:24.060 --> 38:26.640
and there's fierce wrath against Israel.

38:26.640 --> 38:29.220
So the armed men left the captives and the spoil

38:29.220 --> 38:31.660
before the princes and all the congregation.

38:32.580 --> 38:34.100
And don't miss this,

38:34.100 --> 38:37.700
and the men which were expressed by name rose up

38:37.700 --> 38:40.340
and took the captives and with the spoil clothed

38:40.340 --> 38:43.340
all that were naked among them and arrayed them

38:43.340 --> 38:46.300
and shod them and gave them to eat and drink

38:46.300 --> 38:50.580
and anointed them and carried all the feeble of them

38:50.580 --> 38:54.340
upon asses and brought them to Jericho,

38:54.340 --> 38:58.060
the city of palm trees to their brethren.

38:58.060 --> 39:00.440
Then they returned to Samaria.

39:00.440 --> 39:05.440
So you have this situation where Israel is in,

39:07.600 --> 39:09.820
Israel and Judah are in this situation of civil war

39:09.820 --> 39:12.660
and this parallel to how Israel was when Jesus came.

39:12.660 --> 39:15.140
They're in a spiritual civil war between false religion

39:15.140 --> 39:17.900
and the religion of Jesus Christ.

39:17.900 --> 39:21.900
And Jesus is there to free the captives, right?

39:21.900 --> 39:25.380
And here in the story, even though Judah's bad,

39:25.380 --> 39:27.100
there's still a prophet among them.

39:27.100 --> 39:28.260
And even though Israel's bad,

39:28.260 --> 39:30.820
there's still men who will harken to that prophet.

39:30.820 --> 39:35.660
And so there's still men that were willing

39:35.660 --> 39:38.660
to allow these prisoners to go free and what do they do?

39:38.660 --> 39:43.180
They put them on asses like Jesus riding in on the donkey

39:43.180 --> 39:46.220
and they do it and they bring them to Jericho,

39:46.220 --> 39:47.740
the city of palm trees.

39:47.740 --> 39:50.460
That's always a very interesting parallel.

39:50.460 --> 39:52.180
And of course, this triumphal entry

39:53.240 --> 39:55.900
is a fulfillment of prophecy.

39:55.900 --> 39:57.420
That's a very interesting parallel,

39:57.420 --> 40:00.140
but there's a direct fulfillment of prophecy.

40:00.140 --> 40:05.140
Zechariah 9 says, rejoice greatly, oh daughter of Zion.

40:06.100 --> 40:07.900
Shout, oh daughter of Jerusalem,

40:07.900 --> 40:10.220
behold thy king cometh unto thee.

40:10.220 --> 40:12.620
He is just in having salvation,

40:12.620 --> 40:15.300
lowly and riding upon an ass

40:15.300 --> 40:18.380
and upon a colt, the foal of an ass.

40:18.380 --> 40:20.540
And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim

40:20.540 --> 40:22.340
and the horse from Jerusalem.

40:22.340 --> 40:24.940
And the battle bow shall be cut off

40:24.940 --> 40:27.220
and he shall speak peace unto the heathen

40:27.220 --> 40:30.780
and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea

40:30.780 --> 40:33.860
and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

40:33.860 --> 40:37.620
As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant,

40:37.620 --> 40:41.060
I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit

40:41.060 --> 40:43.300
wherein is no water.

40:43.300 --> 40:46.340
Turn you to the stronghold ye prisoners of hope.

40:46.340 --> 40:50.660
Even today do I declare that I will render double unto thee.

40:50.660 --> 40:55.460
And again, so in 2 Chronicles we're freeing prisoners,

40:55.460 --> 40:57.940
in Zechariah we're freeing prisoners,

40:57.940 --> 41:02.940
in Isaiah 42 that Jesus reads in the synagogue,

41:03.180 --> 41:04.860
right in front of everyone.

41:04.860 --> 41:07.900
He opens up the book and reads about freeing prisoners

41:08.820 --> 41:11.540
and the eyes of everyone are fixed upon him

41:11.540 --> 41:12.620
when he's saying that.

41:13.860 --> 41:17.300
And so I think these all tie together.

41:17.300 --> 41:20.980
And so it's a different type of kingdom.

41:20.980 --> 41:25.300
Yes, he's coming in lowly, but he's freeing prisoners.

41:25.300 --> 41:30.300
And you think of also the other main prophecy

41:31.460 --> 41:33.940
of this triumphal entry is Genesis 49.

41:35.420 --> 41:38.660
This is sort of the, Zechariah 9 and Genesis 49

41:38.660 --> 41:40.340
are kind of the milk of this prophecy.

41:40.340 --> 41:43.580
They're the two verses that people go to

41:43.580 --> 41:47.020
to show this is a fulfillment of prophecy.

41:48.260 --> 41:53.260
In Genesis 49, 10, the scepter shall not depart from Judah

41:53.340 --> 41:57.460
nor lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh come

41:57.460 --> 41:59.940
and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

41:59.940 --> 42:03.500
So you think of the gathering in the rapture,

42:03.500 --> 42:06.180
but this is a gathering of the masses of people

42:06.180 --> 42:08.140
outside Jerusalem here.

42:08.140 --> 42:11.020
And it says in verse 11, binding his foal unto the vine

42:11.020 --> 42:13.540
and his asses colt unto the choice vine,

42:13.540 --> 42:16.460
he washed his garments in wine and his clothes

42:16.460 --> 42:18.020
in the blood of grapes.

42:18.020 --> 42:21.940
So you have the colt, the asses colt again here.

42:22.900 --> 42:26.300
And he washed his garments in wine.

42:26.300 --> 42:28.940
Of course, he's about to get very bloody, right?

42:28.940 --> 42:31.860
In this sacrifice after this triumphal entry.

42:31.860 --> 42:34.980
But then also when he returns the second time,

42:34.980 --> 42:38.500
his garments will get bloody and washed in wine as it were,

42:38.500 --> 42:40.420
but it'll be somebody else's blood.

42:40.420 --> 42:42.020
It'll be a different story.

42:42.020 --> 42:44.380
And then in the millennial reign,

42:44.380 --> 42:47.420
there's this sort of his clothes in the blood of grapes.

42:47.420 --> 42:49.660
There's this sort of a picture of like,

42:49.660 --> 42:51.820
you know, there'll be such abundance that you could,

42:51.820 --> 42:53.940
you can wash your clothes in wine, right?

42:53.940 --> 42:56.460
It was just the wine and corn and oil and everything

42:56.460 --> 42:57.860
will just be that abundant.

42:58.860 --> 43:02.700
So like a triple fulfillment, right?

43:04.820 --> 43:07.380
Maybe more, maybe things I haven't thought of.

43:11.580 --> 43:14.820
And so what does the waving of the palms represent?

43:14.820 --> 43:18.820
You know, is this just like some local custom or whatever?

43:20.100 --> 43:22.700
Maybe there's a little bit of that to it, you know?

43:22.700 --> 43:24.300
I'm not one of these people that says,

43:24.300 --> 43:27.900
oh, we gotta take a microscope to the culture

43:27.900 --> 43:29.780
of ancient Israel to figure out what these things mean.

43:29.780 --> 43:32.180
I don't think that's true anymore

43:32.180 --> 43:33.500
than you have to go back to the Hebrew

43:33.500 --> 43:36.300
to understand the Bible, that sort of thing, right?

43:36.300 --> 43:41.300
But Isaiah 55, which is after Isaiah 53,

43:41.540 --> 43:44.580
remember Isaiah 53 is kind of the passion of Christ.

43:44.580 --> 43:47.060
After that in Isaiah 55 talking about

43:48.700 --> 43:52.620
when Jesus comes again, Isaiah 55, 10,

43:52.660 --> 43:54.940
for as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven

43:54.940 --> 43:57.580
and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth

43:57.580 --> 43:59.780
and maketh it bring forth and bud,

43:59.780 --> 44:02.740
that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

44:02.740 --> 44:07.060
so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth,

44:07.060 --> 44:09.260
it shall not return unto me void,

44:09.260 --> 44:12.060
but it shall accomplish that which I please,

44:12.060 --> 44:15.060
and it shall prosper in the thing where to I send it.

44:16.220 --> 44:19.940
For you shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace,

44:19.940 --> 44:22.140
the mountains and the hills shall break forth

44:22.180 --> 44:24.140
before you into singing,

44:24.140 --> 44:28.020
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

44:28.020 --> 44:30.300
Literally the trees are gonna be waving

44:30.300 --> 44:34.540
and welcoming Christ back when he comes in glory.

44:34.540 --> 44:37.100
And the trees will be welcoming,

44:37.100 --> 44:39.860
and so these people waving these palm branches,

44:39.860 --> 44:44.140
they're doing like a mild prefigurement of that, right?

44:45.620 --> 44:49.140
It says instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree,

44:49.140 --> 44:51.900
and instead of the briar shall come up the myrtle tree,

44:51.940 --> 44:53.620
and it shall be to the Lord for a name

44:53.620 --> 44:56.660
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

44:56.660 --> 44:59.100
So instead of thorns and briars,

44:59.100 --> 45:00.260
we'll have nice trees,

45:00.260 --> 45:03.220
and the trees will be pretty much dancing,

45:03.220 --> 45:04.260
welcoming Christ.

45:06.500 --> 45:09.860
And so what's the next thing,

45:09.860 --> 45:11.580
what's the next thing that happens

45:11.580 --> 45:13.900
in the story after this triumphal entry?

45:13.900 --> 45:15.900
I mean, we could just talk about

45:16.740 --> 45:19.140
all the different cool aspects of the entry,

45:19.140 --> 45:23.740
but next thing that happens is the cleansing of the temple.

45:25.860 --> 45:27.980
You know, they spend the night in Bethany,

45:29.020 --> 45:30.460
and then the fig tree,

45:30.460 --> 45:33.180
and then they come to Jerusalem proper.

45:34.740 --> 45:36.500
Now, cleansing the temple is often a story

45:36.500 --> 45:39.580
that's examined in isolation

45:39.580 --> 45:43.980
for all the significance it has just unto itself.

45:43.980 --> 45:47.500
But think of it in the context of the triumphal entry.

45:47.500 --> 45:50.740
It's all the more provocative of an action, right?

45:50.740 --> 45:52.180
It's all the more challenging

45:52.180 --> 45:54.380
to the religious leaders of the time.

45:54.380 --> 45:58.780
He's not just some local nut job knocking over tables

45:58.780 --> 46:00.220
wherein they can just shoo him away

46:00.220 --> 46:01.460
and discredit him or something.

46:01.460 --> 46:04.020
He's a man who just the day before

46:04.020 --> 46:06.380
was welcomed by all the people and the masses

46:06.380 --> 46:07.940
into the city,

46:07.940 --> 46:10.300
and they're all proclaiming him to be their promised king.

46:10.300 --> 46:12.660
And then the next day he's going in,

46:12.660 --> 46:15.100
like on the turf of the religious leaders

46:15.100 --> 46:16.860
and knocking over their stuff, right?

46:16.860 --> 46:19.180
This is extremely provocative.

46:19.180 --> 46:23.340
The Pharisees are now at this critical point

46:23.340 --> 46:25.620
where they really do have to choose

46:25.620 --> 46:28.780
between submitting to their rightful king or killing him.

46:28.780 --> 46:31.260
And of course, the die has already been cast.

46:31.260 --> 46:33.580
Most of their hearts have already been hardened.

46:33.580 --> 46:35.380
There's a few quiet exceptions,

46:35.380 --> 46:37.380
like Pharisees that got saved quietly

46:37.380 --> 46:39.260
and just were afraid to say something,

46:39.260 --> 46:41.460
but most of them, they've been hardened.

46:41.460 --> 46:42.300
They're reprobates.

46:42.300 --> 46:43.980
They cannot believe.

46:44.020 --> 46:45.740
And so like Pharaoh,

46:45.740 --> 46:48.780
God allows them to hate God's anointed

46:48.780 --> 46:51.500
because this will ultimately abound to the glory of God.

46:51.500 --> 46:54.420
This is part of his redemptive plan.

46:54.420 --> 46:57.620
Just like Pharaoh kind of flying off the handle

46:57.620 --> 47:00.860
is how God destroys Pharaoh's army.

47:00.860 --> 47:02.580
These guys just like losing it

47:02.580 --> 47:05.740
and trying to kill Jesus is ultimately how he frees,

47:05.740 --> 47:09.060
God frees his people from the curse of the law.

47:14.540 --> 47:17.140
All right, and I'll turn to Mark 12.

47:17.140 --> 47:18.460
It's one chapter over.

47:19.260 --> 47:23.420
This is still right after the triumphal entry

47:23.420 --> 47:24.940
before he's arrested.

47:26.460 --> 47:29.060
Again, such a big part of the New Testament

47:29.060 --> 47:30.420
is just this one week.

47:32.620 --> 47:35.180
That's why I think Palm Sunday is important.

47:35.180 --> 47:38.100
And in Mark 12, 28,

47:40.620 --> 47:41.900
and one of the scribes came

47:41.900 --> 47:44.020
and having heard them reasoning together

47:44.020 --> 47:45.940
and perceiving that he had answered them well,

47:45.940 --> 47:49.660
asked him, which is the first commandment of all?

47:49.660 --> 47:51.700
And Jesus answered him,

47:51.700 --> 47:53.100
the first of all the commandment is,

47:53.100 --> 47:55.420
He who is Israel, the Lord, O God, is one Lord.

47:59.180 --> 48:01.940
So the guy goes back and forth with them

48:01.940 --> 48:06.540
and the guy gives him an interesting answer.

48:06.540 --> 48:09.300
He says, Master, they all said the truth,

48:09.300 --> 48:10.940
for there is one God

48:10.980 --> 48:12.460
and there's none other but he.

48:12.460 --> 48:13.740
And to love him with all the heart

48:13.740 --> 48:14.620
and with all the understanding,

48:14.620 --> 48:16.300
with all the soul and all the strength,

48:16.300 --> 48:17.460
and love his neighbors himself

48:17.460 --> 48:22.460
is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

48:22.860 --> 48:24.020
So he's basically saying,

48:24.020 --> 48:26.020
hey, there's something more important

48:26.020 --> 48:28.700
than keeping the letter of the law.

48:29.980 --> 48:31.460
And that says,

48:31.460 --> 48:34.420
and when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly,

48:34.420 --> 48:35.340
he said unto him,

48:35.340 --> 48:39.980
thou art not far from the kingdom of God.

48:39.980 --> 48:43.620
And so Jesus saw that he answered discreetly.

48:43.620 --> 48:46.260
Again, this is a very tense environment.

48:46.260 --> 48:49.980
It's do or die at this point for the Pharisees,

48:49.980 --> 48:52.820
whether Jesus would be accepted as king

48:52.820 --> 48:56.140
or him and his followers killed as usurpers.

48:56.140 --> 49:01.140
And here he is again, talking about the kingdom of God

49:01.140 --> 49:03.300
and these Pharisees thinking about entering

49:03.300 --> 49:05.580
the kingdom of God.

49:06.500 --> 49:11.500
And what's some of the last things he's preaching here,

49:12.940 --> 49:15.300
it's about being the son of David, right?

49:16.340 --> 49:17.860
Just a couple of verses down.

49:19.620 --> 49:22.100
How say the scribes that Christ is the son of David?

49:22.100 --> 49:23.940
For David himself said by the Holy Ghost,

49:23.940 --> 49:25.780
the Lord said to my Lord,

49:25.780 --> 49:26.980
sit down on my right hand

49:26.980 --> 49:29.580
till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

49:29.580 --> 49:33.500
David therefore himself calleth him Lord.

49:33.500 --> 49:35.260
And whence is he then his son?

49:35.940 --> 49:37.140
And the common people heard him gladly.

49:37.140 --> 49:38.260
So look what's going on here.

49:38.260 --> 49:42.180
First the people say of their own volition,

49:42.180 --> 49:43.700
this is the son of David.

49:44.620 --> 49:46.260
And then once he's arrived,

49:46.260 --> 49:48.940
he's knocked over stuff in the temple.

49:48.940 --> 49:52.100
He's royally pissing off the Pharisees.

49:52.100 --> 49:53.620
Then he says, what does it really mean

49:53.620 --> 49:55.340
to be the son of David?

49:55.340 --> 49:57.980
It means you're the Lord of David, right?

49:57.980 --> 50:00.620
And then they don't have an answer for that.

50:00.620 --> 50:03.180
He's slowly building this case, right?

50:04.180 --> 50:08.060
And so Jesus is finally openly teaching who he is.

50:08.060 --> 50:11.140
Whereas previously he's kind of told his disciples,

50:11.140 --> 50:14.580
like don't proclaim this too openly before the time.

50:16.140 --> 50:19.100
And so just as the common people had welcomed him

50:19.100 --> 50:20.660
into the city, at this point,

50:20.660 --> 50:23.220
they're still gladly hearing his message.

50:23.220 --> 50:26.780
But of course, the people's receptivity

50:26.780 --> 50:28.900
is sort of a two-edged sword, right?

50:28.900 --> 50:30.980
They're receptive, but they're fickle.

50:30.980 --> 50:33.700
And many of them would abandon him or turn on him.

50:33.700 --> 50:38.340
And the Pharisees, they're afraid to take Jesus by day

50:38.340 --> 50:39.380
because of the people,

50:39.380 --> 50:43.300
but ultimately the people did nothing to protect Jesus.

50:43.300 --> 50:46.420
Once he was delivered under the Romans,

50:46.420 --> 50:49.460
they just followed whoever seemed more powerful.

50:49.460 --> 50:50.580
And in that case today,

50:50.580 --> 50:52.500
a lot of people are Catholic

50:52.500 --> 50:55.060
just because that seems like the biggest church,

50:55.060 --> 50:56.620
with the most official church.

50:56.620 --> 51:00.020
They get lots of money, fancy outfits, lots of members.

51:00.060 --> 51:02.020
It just seems like, oh, well, they're earthly powerful,

51:02.020 --> 51:04.180
so it must be the way to go, right?

51:05.420 --> 51:07.420
The human heart typically does not go

51:07.420 --> 51:09.300
with the true right and wrong,

51:09.300 --> 51:12.420
but with what it thinks can advantage it, right?

51:12.420 --> 51:15.260
We're selfish creatures, right?

51:15.260 --> 51:17.980
We think, well, how do I avoid danger?

51:17.980 --> 51:19.380
How do I go with the flow

51:19.380 --> 51:21.740
with the people that are in power, right?

51:21.740 --> 51:25.500
And people like Christianity

51:25.500 --> 51:28.300
when they feel like it's helping them win in life,

51:28.300 --> 51:33.300
but the crowd sort of starts to thin out, right?

51:33.460 --> 51:36.180
When there's persecution or there's hard times.

51:36.180 --> 51:39.900
And again, are we gonna be the crowd

51:39.900 --> 51:42.460
that only wants Christ as triumphal king,

51:42.460 --> 51:43.900
can we also embrace,

51:43.900 --> 51:46.860
or can we also embrace the sacrificial aspect

51:46.860 --> 51:48.300
of his kingship, right?

51:49.280 --> 51:52.260
The truth is that to truly have the former,

51:52.260 --> 51:55.120
you also must have the latter,

51:55.120 --> 51:56.540
to really have Christ,

51:57.480 --> 51:59.000
to live triumphantly through Christ,

51:59.000 --> 52:01.960
you also have to have the sacrificial aspect of Christ,

52:01.960 --> 52:04.760
the dying to self, the being buried with him,

52:04.760 --> 52:05.840
and so forth and so on,

52:05.840 --> 52:08.520
and being partaker of his sufferings.

52:09.560 --> 52:14.480
And so in this world, there are still to this day,

52:14.480 --> 52:17.800
some lesser and greater kings, right?

52:17.800 --> 52:19.320
I think King Charles is gonna come speak

52:19.320 --> 52:21.240
to the Congress pretty soon.

52:21.240 --> 52:23.080
Am I right, anyone else heard that?

52:25.600 --> 52:29.520
Anyway, but few of any of these

52:30.760 --> 52:31.600
that are still around today

52:31.600 --> 52:33.800
are true kings in the biblical sense, right?

52:34.720 --> 52:38.640
But in every true hierarchy,

52:38.640 --> 52:41.200
in every true legitimate hierarchy,

52:41.200 --> 52:44.120
he who possesses the superior degree,

52:44.120 --> 52:46.560
thereby also possesses at the same time

52:46.560 --> 52:49.360
all the subordinate degrees, right?

52:50.320 --> 52:53.040
Moses as the leader of the people

52:53.080 --> 52:55.840
could not only lead his king in war,

52:55.840 --> 52:59.440
but he also could perform the priestly sacrifices,

52:59.440 --> 53:03.200
he could also prophesy, et cetera, right?

53:03.200 --> 53:05.360
The leader must be able to do that

53:05.360 --> 53:08.480
which he would require of the follower, okay?

53:08.480 --> 53:11.600
So consider that a pastor must be a soul winner

53:11.600 --> 53:14.040
before he tells other people to become a soul winner, right?

53:14.040 --> 53:15.840
He must have read his Bible before he gets up

53:15.840 --> 53:18.640
and preaches that you should read your Bible.

53:18.640 --> 53:21.240
He must be married before he performs

53:21.240 --> 53:23.640
marriages for other people, right?

53:23.640 --> 53:25.240
He's gotta be married before he counsels

53:25.240 --> 53:27.560
other people on marriage and so on.

53:27.560 --> 53:30.680
Like even in earthly organizations,

53:30.680 --> 53:32.920
you don't become a 33rd degree Freemason

53:32.920 --> 53:35.320
before you could do all the other degrees, right?

53:35.320 --> 53:38.560
You know, the generals in an army

53:38.560 --> 53:42.080
don't get to skip the boot camp, right?

53:42.080 --> 53:45.560
They don't get to skip the phase of polishing their shoes

53:45.560 --> 53:49.040
and tucking in their shirt as lowly officers, right?

53:49.040 --> 53:52.040
So just like to be the ultimate leader then,

53:52.040 --> 53:54.480
you have to be able to do everything else, right?

53:54.480 --> 53:55.880
It's truly gonna be perfect.

53:56.800 --> 53:59.280
Thus it behoved Christ to fulfill the role

53:59.280 --> 54:03.120
not only of triumphal king and not only of prophet

54:03.120 --> 54:04.720
but also of high priest.

54:05.800 --> 54:10.800
All the roles he has for man, he did perfectly himself

54:10.800 --> 54:14.560
so that our service were not unreasonable.

54:14.560 --> 54:17.960
And we read that quote,

54:17.960 --> 54:20.640
when God made promise to Abraham

54:20.640 --> 54:23.280
because he could swear by no greater,

54:23.280 --> 54:26.520
he swear by himself.

54:26.520 --> 54:29.040
And so when God made a promise

54:29.040 --> 54:32.360
to take away the sins of the world and defeat death,

54:32.360 --> 54:35.680
he could offer no greater sacrifice than himself.

54:35.680 --> 54:38.840
He could provide us no greater high priest than himself.

54:38.840 --> 54:40.960
The lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world,

54:41.000 --> 54:45.400
he could offer no greater captain of our salvation.

54:45.400 --> 54:49.320
He could offer no greater conqueror of death than himself.

54:49.320 --> 54:51.880
So if the last enemy to be destroyed is death,

54:51.880 --> 54:56.000
then properly speaking, the king, the leader

54:56.000 --> 54:57.800
must defeat it first.

54:57.800 --> 55:00.520
Just like your pastor before he ever got up here

55:00.520 --> 55:01.840
and told you to become a soul winner,

55:01.840 --> 55:03.400
he was a soul winner, right?

55:03.400 --> 55:05.400
Before he ever got up here and told you to read your Bible,

55:05.400 --> 55:07.320
he had read his Bible.

55:07.320 --> 55:09.160
On down the line, right?

55:09.160 --> 55:13.560
For Jesus, if death is the enemy and it has to be defeated,

55:13.560 --> 55:16.520
Jesus had to defeat it before any of us.

55:16.520 --> 55:19.040
He's the first born from the dead.

55:20.360 --> 55:21.960
And we must needs die.

55:23.200 --> 55:25.960
But first he tastes the death for every man.

55:27.560 --> 55:29.720
So that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,

55:29.720 --> 55:31.280
but have everlasting life.

55:31.280 --> 55:33.720
So as we look forward to Easter,

55:33.720 --> 55:37.680
we see that the humility and the shame of the cross

55:38.640 --> 55:43.640
is then at Easter overcome in the power of the resurrection.

55:44.160 --> 55:46.600
The thing that scattered the multitude

55:46.600 --> 55:49.880
actually abounded to Christ's glory

55:49.880 --> 55:52.120
in not that long a span of time

55:52.120 --> 55:54.520
is that people just had to have a little bit of faith

55:54.520 --> 55:58.800
and stick with it just those few days to see the results.

55:58.800 --> 55:59.960
And just like this morning,

55:59.960 --> 56:03.080
our life is just this little bit, right?

56:03.080 --> 56:05.760
And if we just stick with it, we will see the results.

56:08.480 --> 56:13.120
Palm Sunday, as it were, was planned out in eternity past

56:13.120 --> 56:17.400
and it's still celebrated today, 2000 years later,

56:17.400 --> 56:20.440
but even greater still is what it prefigures, right?

56:20.440 --> 56:22.640
The triumphant entry of Christ

56:22.640 --> 56:25.480
into the millennial kingdom in the future.

56:25.480 --> 56:29.440
And then he's not going to come on the fold of an ass,

56:29.440 --> 56:30.480
but on a white horse.

56:30.480 --> 56:32.880
And he's not gonna be trampling palm leaves,

56:32.880 --> 56:35.600
he's gonna be trampling his enemies.

56:35.600 --> 56:39.440
And he's not going to come to die, but to rule into reign.

56:41.800 --> 56:44.680
But first, the seed must be planted, right?

56:44.680 --> 56:47.500
And then it grows into the great tree.

56:49.880 --> 56:52.160
And Luke's telling of the triumphal entry,

56:53.240 --> 56:57.600
Christ first says, before the triumphal entry,

56:57.600 --> 56:59.480
he says, but those mine enemies,

56:59.480 --> 57:01.880
which would not that I should reign over them,

57:01.880 --> 57:04.640
bring hither and slay them before me.

57:05.520 --> 57:08.040
This foreshadowing, this foreshadowing,

57:08.040 --> 57:12.280
it was not about what he was about to do, right?

57:12.280 --> 57:17.040
Right afterward, but what he will do in the future.

57:17.040 --> 57:22.040
And this meek entry on the donkey is just a small

57:22.040 --> 57:25.360
foreshadowing of what he will do in the future.

57:25.360 --> 57:28.080
And it was still glorious in its own right, right?

57:28.080 --> 57:31.160
The way that God is able to humble himself as a man

57:31.160 --> 57:32.520
and be obedient unto death.

57:33.480 --> 57:37.480
And I guess the purpose of this whole sermon,

57:37.480 --> 57:40.400
what ties it all together is that first he comes

57:40.400 --> 57:45.400
as a humble king, as a friend, you know?

57:47.080 --> 57:49.640
Fitting with this humble entry into the world

57:49.640 --> 57:54.000
is like he was a baby in a manger with working class parents

57:54.000 --> 57:55.640
and he's just a regular guy, right?

57:58.120 --> 58:01.520
But, and that's to kind of get on our level,

58:01.520 --> 58:06.360
but he's gonna come again as a judge and as our ruler.

58:08.200 --> 58:10.400
And so he basically, he gives you a chance

58:10.400 --> 58:13.800
to accept him one way so you don't have to

58:13.800 --> 58:17.640
have him come down on you in the future, right?

58:18.760 --> 58:21.520
Very, very, very interesting way of doing things

58:21.520 --> 58:24.640
because, you know, an earthly way of thinking

58:24.640 --> 58:29.160
might be to do the show of power first

58:29.160 --> 58:32.520
and get you to just obey out of that, right?

58:35.400 --> 58:37.160
You know, but he does this so that we can have

58:37.160 --> 58:40.640
better fellowship with him and have a better model

58:40.640 --> 58:42.040
of how to live our lives.

58:42.040 --> 58:45.440
And, you know, as the hymn Christians good night says,

58:45.440 --> 58:49.120
he shall come and not in lowly guise, right?

58:49.120 --> 58:51.240
That's what we're looking forward to.

58:51.240 --> 58:53.680
But, you know, he offers for us to accept him

58:53.680 --> 58:55.160
in both roles, right?

58:55.160 --> 58:59.000
And he actually demands you do if you would not worship

58:59.840 --> 59:02.600
him in vain, but rather worship him as he is in truth,

59:02.600 --> 59:03.680
you know, the king.

59:03.680 --> 59:04.760
Like a lot of these people saying,

59:04.760 --> 59:06.480
Hosanna, the son of David and stuff,

59:06.480 --> 59:09.440
they thought they were getting one kind of king

59:09.440 --> 59:11.400
and he's giving him something quite different.

59:11.400 --> 59:14.640
You actually have to understand the whole picture

59:14.640 --> 59:17.040
that he has to be, you know, high priest

59:17.040 --> 59:20.280
and sacrifice and prophet, and then he's gonna come

59:20.280 --> 59:22.200
as the judge and the king.

59:22.200 --> 59:23.200
You know, because it's the first time

59:23.200 --> 59:25.240
he didn't come to judge the world.

59:25.240 --> 59:26.560
He comes not to condemn the world,

59:26.560 --> 59:28.920
but the world through him might be saved.

59:29.840 --> 59:31.120
When he comes a second time, he is gonna condemn people.

59:31.120 --> 59:32.960
It's gonna be pretty harsh.

59:32.960 --> 59:36.880
And so, you know, accept him as the humble

59:36.880 --> 59:38.920
and gentle king and the guy on a donkey,

59:38.920 --> 59:42.640
accept him that way so you're not on the receiving end

59:42.640 --> 59:44.920
of the white horse Jesus with the sword

59:44.920 --> 59:47.320
and the blood and all that stuff.

59:47.320 --> 59:51.200
It's an easy choice, but it's sometimes hard

59:51.200 --> 59:54.720
for the world to make that choice because they want

59:54.720 --> 59:57.080
the triumph without the sacrifice.

59:57.080 --> 01:00:02.080
They want the glory and the temporal kingdom

01:00:02.280 --> 01:00:06.680
and the temporal benefits without, you know,

01:00:06.680 --> 01:00:11.520
that gruesome scene of the cross and having to be ashamed

01:00:11.520 --> 01:00:14.040
and all the things that Jesus went through.

01:00:15.360 --> 01:00:17.040
So with that, we'll close with a word of prayer.

01:00:17.040 --> 01:00:21.080
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your passion

01:00:21.080 --> 01:00:24.720
and we thank you for these things that took place,

01:00:24.720 --> 01:00:26.240
that you did for us.

01:00:26.280 --> 01:00:28.120
Just help us to meditate on those things

01:00:28.120 --> 01:00:30.600
and to remember them as we head into Easter.

01:00:31.520 --> 01:00:33.320
Let's bless everyone here tonight

01:00:33.320 --> 01:00:35.160
and everyone that's sick that couldn't be here.

01:00:35.160 --> 01:00:36.760
In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

01:00:38.000 --> 01:00:39.400
And we'll close with a song.

01:00:48.040 --> 01:00:49.520
Amen, great sermon.

01:00:49.520 --> 01:00:51.840
And now, at this time, please turn in your

01:00:51.840 --> 01:00:55.800
Red and Green Songbooks one more time to Song 64.

01:00:55.840 --> 01:00:58.520
Shall We Gather At The River?

01:00:58.520 --> 01:01:02.720
That is number 64, Shall We Gather At The River?

01:01:06.120 --> 01:01:11.120
64, Shall We Gather At The River?

01:01:13.680 --> 01:01:15.240
On the first.

01:01:16.120 --> 01:01:21.120
Shall we gather at the river

01:01:21.600 --> 01:01:26.960
where bright angel feet have trod

01:01:26.960 --> 01:01:31.640
with its crystal tide forever

01:01:31.640 --> 01:01:36.640
flowing by the throne of God?

01:01:37.560 --> 01:01:42.560
Yes, we'll gather at the river,

01:01:42.680 --> 01:01:47.680
the beautiful, the beautiful river.

01:01:48.240 --> 01:01:52.840
Gather with the saints at the river

01:01:52.840 --> 01:01:57.840
that flows by the throne of God.

01:01:59.040 --> 01:02:04.040
On the bosom of the river

01:02:04.360 --> 01:02:09.360
where the Savior King we own

01:02:09.640 --> 01:02:14.280
we shall meet and sorrow never

01:02:14.320 --> 01:02:19.320
beneath the glory of the throne.

01:02:20.120 --> 01:02:25.120
Yes, we'll gather at the river,

01:02:25.360 --> 01:02:30.360
the beautiful, the beautiful river.

01:02:30.960 --> 01:02:35.720
Gather with the saints at the river

01:02:35.720 --> 01:02:40.720
that flows by the throne of God.

01:02:41.560 --> 01:02:46.560
There we reach the shining river,

01:02:47.040 --> 01:02:52.040
lay we every burden down.

01:02:52.480 --> 01:02:57.480
Grace our spirits will deliver

01:02:57.480 --> 01:03:02.480
and provide a robe and crown.

01:03:03.160 --> 01:03:08.160
Yes, we'll gather at the river,

01:03:08.640 --> 01:03:13.640
the beautiful, the beautiful river.

01:03:14.240 --> 01:03:19.000
Gather with the saints at the river

01:03:19.000 --> 01:03:24.000
that flows by the throne of God.

01:03:25.200 --> 01:03:30.200
Soon we'll reach the shining river,

01:03:30.720 --> 01:03:35.720
soon our pilgrimage will cease,

01:03:36.200 --> 01:03:41.200
soon our happy hearts will quiver

01:03:41.200 --> 01:03:46.200
with the melody of peace.

01:03:47.080 --> 01:03:52.080
Yes, we'll gather at the river,

01:03:52.280 --> 01:03:57.280
the beautiful, the beautiful river.

01:03:57.920 --> 01:04:02.720
Gather with the saints at the river

01:04:02.720 --> 01:04:07.720
that flows by the throne of God.

01:04:09.920 --> 01:04:12.080
Amen and Brother Temmo,

01:04:12.080 --> 01:04:14.080
would you close us in a word of prayer?
